Abstract: objective: to evaluate the contribution of abdominal ultrasound in the follow-up of a group of post-treatment breast cancer patients. material and methods: we retrospectively studied the findings of abdominal ultrasound examinations of 100 patients treated for primary breast cancer. these patients were attended from january to december of 1997 at the ultrasound sector, division of radiology of the department of clinical medicine of the "faculdade de medicina de ribeir?o preto da universidade de s?o paulo", sp, brazil. information such as age, histological type, staging, number of examinations and ultrasound findings were rated and analyzed. results: abdominal ultrasound was normal in 70% of the patients whereas liver metastases were diagnosed in 3% of the patients. conclusion: the majority of the abnormalities identified were not directly related to complications of breast cancer.

Abstract: snapping syndromes occur during certain movements in several joints and may be accompanied by local pain and crepitation or audible snapping sensation. snapping joints may eventually have no pathologic significance and in this case no treatment is required. there is an array of intra- and extra-articular causes of snapping syndrome and the lack of precise clinical findings impairs the definition of the most appropriate imaging method to confirm the diagnosis. the present study is aimed at discussing the most frequent causes of snapping syndrome in different joints, emphasizing the indications and limitations of each of the different diagnostic methods in specific situations of the clinical practice.

Revista Brasileira de Geofísica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-261X2009000300003
Abstract: this work evaluated the activity concentration of the radioelements k, eu and eth in samples of granites from rond?nia state, brazil. the statistical analysis of the data indicated that they fit lognormal distributions. the modal values correspond to about 11% for k, 29 ppm for eu and 85 ppm for eth. directsignificant correlations were found among the concentrations of the three radioelements, i.e. r = 0.71 (between k and eu), r = 0.72 (between k and eth), andr = 0.72 (between eu and eth), suggesting congruency of their accumulation in minerals occurring in the rocks analyzed. the activity concentration data allowed estimate the absorbed dose rate in air at 1 m above the ground, which also fits a lognormal distribution characterized by a mode of 2.7 msv/y that is slightly higher than the average worldwide exposure of 2.4 msv/y. the results obtained also allowed evaluate if the granites analyzed are radiometrically suitable as building and ornamental materials.

Acta Ortopédica Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-78522008000400004
Abstract: in this study, the authors assess the results of 35 surgical ulnar nerve decompression procedures performed on 28 leprous patients. the parameters employed included the visual analogue scale, the behavioral scale, the muscle strength evaluation, the esthesiometry and the evaluation of the effect of the procedure on decreasing postoperative corticoid therapy doses. early resolution of pain was seen after surgery, muscle strength increased in half of the patients, sensitivity increased in half of the patients, with ongoing and significant decrease of prednisone doses after surgery.

Abstract: paraquat is a nonselective contact herbicide of great toxicological importance, being associated with high mortality rates, mainly due to respiratory failure. we report the case of a 22-year-old male admitted to the emergency room with a sore throat, dysphagia, hemoptysis, and retrosternal pain after the ingestion of 50 ml of a paraquat solution, four days prior to admission. chest ct scans revealed pulmonary opacities, pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax, and subcutaneous emphysema. the patient was submitted to two cycles of immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide, methylprednisolone, and dexamethasone. the pulmonary gas exchange parameters gradually improved, and the patient was discharged four weeks later. the clinical and tomographic follow-up evaluations performed at four months after discharge showed that there had been further clinical improvement. we also present a brief review of the literature, as well as a discussion of the therapeutic algorithm for severe paraquat poisoning.

Abstract: lameness related to arthropathies are common and so very important to equine veterinary medicine, considering that almost 33% of all lamenesses are due to arthropathies. the present experiment aimed the evaluation of synovial fluid estability after cooling and freezing and its possible therapeutical utilization. samples of synovial fluid were taken from 25 equines, from both intertarsus proximall joints by arthrocentesis. samples from each animal were mixed and then divided into 3 aliquotes, and analysed fresh (gi), after cooling (gii) and after freezing (giii). the protein evaluation showed significant difference between gi and gii and ii and iii, but gi and giii were statistically similar. leukocytes counting showed gi and gii, and gi and giii to be statistically different, but no difference was seen between gii and giii. lymphocyte was the predominant cell in 96% of the cases. morphological abnormalities in 8% of the leukocytes of animals in gii and in 64% of those in giii were found. mucin clot showed no difference betwen all groups studied. based on the results, it was possible to conclude that the synovial fluid has different protein and cellularity values after cooling and freezing, but is still in the normal range.

Abstract: Two salts of the mesoionic compounds 1,4-diphenyl-5-(5-nitro-2-furanyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-thiol chloride (MC-1) and 4-phenyl-5-(5-nitro-2-furanyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamine chloride (MC-2) were synthesized utilizing 1,4-diphenyl-thiosemicarbazide and 5-nitro-2-furoyl chloride as starting materials. Their structures were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and elemental analysis. These compounds were analyzed for their influence on the effectiveness of norfloxacin, tetracycline, and erythromycin (standard antibiotics) against resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus. MC-1 and MC-2, at sub-inhibitory concentrations of 16 μg/mL, favourably modulated the antibiotic activity of tetracycline by 16- and 32-fold, respectively (MIC), and that of erythromycin by 4-fold.

Abstract: the enrichment and isolation of proteins are considered limiting steps in proteomic studies. identification of proteins whose expression is transient, those that are of low-abundance, and of natural peptides not described in databases, is still a great challenge. plant extracts are in general complex, and contaminants interfere with the identification of proteins involved in important physiological processes, such as plant defense against pathogens. this review discusses the challenges and strategies of separomics applied to the identification of low-abundance proteins and peptides in plants, especially in plants challenged by pathogens. separomics is described as a group of methodological strategies for the separation of protein molecules for proteomics. several tools have been used to remove highly abundant proteins from samples and also non-protein contaminants. the use of chromatographic techniques, the partition of the proteome into subproteomes, and an effort to isolate proteins in their native form have allowed the isolation and identification of rare proteins involved in different processes.
