Abstract: one aimed with this work to study the influence of cotton and peanut cultivars and relative planting times as intercropping, being verified the relationships of competitiveness among the two cultures. the experiment was carried out in miss?o velha, ceará state, brazil, at cotton experimental field of embrapa in the agricultural year of 2002. twenty treatments were tested with 4 repetitions, in a randomized block with 2 x 2 x 4 + 2 + 2 factorial, the factors being two cultivars of cotton (brs 186 - precocious 3 and brs 201), two cultivars of peanut (l7 and br-1), four planting times (0; 7; 14 and 21 days) plus the isolated controls of the two cultivars of cotton and peanut crops. considering the results obtained for rude income, surrender liquid and rates of return, one considered that there was not economical advantage for the producer when the cotton was planted in intercrop with the peanut, since the referring values to the intercrop were smaller than the isolated cultivations.
A comparative study of the TF-Test?, Kato-Katz, Hoffman-Pons-Janer, Willis and Baermann-Moraes coprologic methods for the detection of human parasitosis

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762012000100011
Abstract: this study compares the diagnostic accuracy of the tf-test? (tft) for human parasitosis with results obtained using the traditional kato-katz (kk), hoffman-pons-janer (hpj), willis and baermann-moraes (bm) techniques. overall, four stool samples were taken from each individual; three alternate-day tft stool samples and another sample that was collected in a universal container. stool samples were taken from 331 inhabitants of the community of quilombola santa cruz. the gold standard (gs) for protozoa detection was defined as the combined results for tft, hpj and willis coproscopic techniques; for helminth detection, gs was defined as the combined results for all five coproscopic techniques (tft, kk, hpj, willis and bm). the positivity rate of each method was compared using the mcnemar test. while the tft exhibited similar positivity rates to the gs for entamoeba histolytica/dispar (82.4%) and giardia duodenalis (90%), hpj and willis techniques exhibited significantly lower positivity rates for these protozoa. all tests exhibited significantly lower positivity rates compared with gs for the diagnosis of helminths. the kk technique had the highest positivity rate for diagnosing schistosoma mansoni (74.6%), while the tft had the highest positivity rates for ascaris lumbricoides (58.1%) and hookworm (75%); hpj technique had the highest positivity rate for strongyloides stercoralis (50%). although a combination of tests is the most accurate method for the diagnosis of enteral parasites, the tft reliably estimates the prevalence of protozoa and selected helminths, such as a. lumbricoides and hookworm. further studies are needed to evaluate the detection accuracy of the tft in samples with varying numbers of parasites.
Thermae et Ludus: o início do turismo de saúde no Brasil e no mundo
Dario Luiz Paixo
Estas duas atividades conviveram - e ainda convivem em muitos países - harmonicamente desde o auge do Império Romano à Belle époque do turismo europeu. For a long time, the spas, the ranches and the watering places invested in a relation that marked the society profoundly: the baths and the game. T hese two activities cohabited - and still cohabit in lots of countries - harmoniously from the summit of the Roman Empire to Belle époque of the European tourism. ln Brazil, sumptuous hotels-casinos allied to the treatments with water, received the new bourgeoisie geared to the health and the entertainment. With the prohibition of the game in the country, these enterprises needed restructure to survive, some without success. However the return of thermalism and the casinos in the majority of the countries of the world reopens the discussions and polemics concerning the role of the game in Brazil and its relations with the tourist activity, deprived of new segments to compete with already consolidated markets_
Inequalities for differentiable reproducing kernels and an application to positive integral operators
Buescu Jorge,Paixo AC
Journal of Inequalities and Applications , 2006,
Abstract: Let be an interval and let be a reproducing kernel on . We show that if is in the appropriate differentiability class, it satisfies a 2-parameter family of inequalities of which the diagonal dominance inequality for reproducing kernels is the 0th order case. We provide an application to integral operators: if is a positive definite kernel on (possibly unbounded) with differentiability class and satisfies an extra integrability condition, we show that eigenfunctions are and provide a bound for its Sobolev norm. This bound is shown to be optimal.
Glico-hemoglobina (HbA1c): aspectos clínicos e analíticos
Camargo, Joíza Lins;Gross, Jorge Luiz;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302004000400005
Abstract: glycohemoglobin (ghb) has a key role in the assessment of glycemic control in diabetic patients. several studies have clearly shown that improved glycemic control is strongly associated with decreased development and/or progression of diabetic complications in both type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus. therefore, accurate determination of ghb concentration is an important issue for clinical laboratories. several factors may affect and lead to erroneous results. we discuss the problems of standardization of ghb measurements for monitoring glycemic control and also consider the potential interfering factors on ghb measurements. moreover, ghb assays may be affected by interference in different ways. the effect of interference may be more clinically relevant with poor metabolic control. laboratory staff must be aware of all pitfalls to avoid adding more confusion to the clinical interpretation of hba1c values and physicians should contact laboratories if discrepancies between clinical impressions and laboratory data are observed.
Paixo, Luiz Andrés Ribeiro;
Economia Aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-80502009000100006
Abstract: violence has become one of the most pressing concerns in brazilian society, demanding answers from politicians and provoking academic debates. this work uses a hedonic price model to estimate the implicit cost of street violence - for example murder and assault - on a sample of belo horizonte's shops and commercial property. four regressions were carried out, each separately testing the effects of each crime on each specific type of building. evidence has been collected which suggests that buildings located in violent areas are subject to a depreciation in value.
Paixo, Luiz Andrés;Abramo, Pedro;
Nova Economia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512008000200003
Abstract: this article discusses the shifts in the urban structure of the city of belo horizonte in the period between 1994 and 2003. departing from a post-keynesian methodological basis, we outlined the main vectors of real estate activity in belo horizonte. we conclude that residential real estate activity has been leaving the south and northeast regions and concentrating on the pampulha region, whereas commercial real estate activity has been gradually abandoning the city centre to become established in the southern region.

Abstract: abdominal obesity is associated with cardiovascular disease. this study aims to compare two measures of abdominal obesity [waist and wais-to-hip ratio (whr)] in patients with dm2 to identify cardiovascular risk factors: ischemic cardiopathy, hypertension, dislipidemia, obesity and diabetic nephropathy. a multicentric study was performed in 820 patients with type 2 dm. waist circumference strongly correlated with body mass index (bmi), for men (r= 0.814; p< 0.05) and women (r= 0.770; p< 0.05). on the other hand, wrh was weakly correlated (r= 0.263, p< 0.05 for men; r= 0.092, p< 0.05 for women). only waist circumference correlated with systolic pressure (r= 0.211, p< 0.05 for men; r= 0,224, p< 0.05 for women). roc curve analysis demonstrated the superiority of waist circumference measurement compared to whr regarding obesity and hypertension for men and women, and dyslipidemia for men. in conclusion, waist circumference is better correlated with cardiovascular risk factor than wrh.
C?rtes, Consuelo Garrastazu Paixo;Rodrigues, José Luiz;
Ciência Rural , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782000000300015
Abstract: the aim of these experiments was to determine the in vitro and in vivo survivability of mus domesticus domesticus blastocysts, following exposure and vitrification in modified pbs solution containing 9.0m of ethylene glycol (eg) and 0.3m of sucrose. the cryoprotectant solutions were denominated i (without sucrose) and is (with sucrose) when the embryo exposure to the solutions has been done in two steps. first the embryos were exposed to a modified pbs solution with 1,8m eg + 6% bsa during 2 minutes, and after they were transferred to straws containing modified pbs plus 9.0m eg + 6% bsa and after 30 seconds immersed into liquid nitrogen. the others cryoprotectant solutions, denominated ii (without sucrose) and iis (with sucrose) the embryos were exposed directly to the 9.0m eg and after 30 seconds plunged into the liquid nitrogen. in the first experiment a survival rate of 299 blastocysts was observed following exposure to cryoprotectant solutions. there was no statistical diference among control and treatment groups. the experiment ii allowed to evaluate the in vitro embryo survival, after vitrification of 330 blastocysts, the cryoprotectant solutions i and is determinated statistically different (p<0.05) embryo survival rates, showing in vitro hatching rates of 49 and 40%, respectively. in experiment 3, 141 blastocysts were exposed to the cryoprotectant solutions i and is, vitrified and then transferred into the recipients. the number of implantations and fetuses were observed after 14 days of gestation. there was no statistical difference (p>0.05) among the solutions i and is in the number of implantations (37 and 32%) and fetuses (27 and 27%), respectively. the survival rate of mus domesticus domesticus blastocysts did not improve with the addition of sucrose to the vitrification solution containing 9.0m of eg.
Pontes, Eduardo;Paixo, Luiz Andrés;Abramo, Pedro;
Revista de Economia Contemporanea , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-98482011000100007
Abstract: this article provides an alternative approach, using the heterodox urban economy as a study object. such economy seeks to explain how there is the regularity of the urban residential setting from the action of individuals in the market. the hedonic price model is used to esteem the implicit violence costs (e.g. homicides and robberies to pedestrians) in housing prices, from a sample of properties transacted in belo horizonte. two regressions that could capture the willingness of individuals to pay for living in regions with greater security were shot. the results show that there is a relationship between the reduction in crime rates and valuation of properties in some belo horizonte regions.
