Daniela S. de Almeida, Jorge A. Martins, Louren?o H. B. Vidotto, Leila D. Martins
Journal of Geoscience and Environment Protection (GEP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/gep.2015.36011
Abstract:

The deposition of ultrafine particles, in the human respiratory tract, from four highly impacted megacities across the globe, was evaluated by using a pulmonary deposition model. It was found that, for the locations studied, an average of 62% of atmospheric particles was retained in the respiratory system. As expected, the model shows that smaller particles penetrate deeper in the airways. In addition, it’s shown that children are more susceptible than adults, retaining 8% more ultrafine particles.

Neotropical Entomology , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2009000200011
Abstract: the parasitoid trichogramma has been used worldwide as biological control agent due to its wide geographic distribution, high specialization and efficacy against many lepidopteran pests. biological and behavioral traits of trichogramma pretiosum riley parasitizing sitotroga cerealella (oliver) eggs were studied aiming to a better understanding of the results from parasitism and superparasitism. the variables investigated were: host acceptance and contact time by t. pretiosum on parasitized host, percentage of parasitoid emergence, number of deformed individuals produced, egg-adult period, sex ratio, offspring female body size and longevity, and number of s. cerealella eggs parasitized/female. parasitism rejection was observed on parasitized host eggs after 24, 72 and 120h of parasitism. the rejection was higher for eggs parasitized after 72h and 120h of parasitism as compared to the eggs after 24h of parasitism. t. pretiosum contact time on eggs after 24h of parasitism was greater than on 72 and 120h. the offspring produced from hosts from which a single parasitoid emerged were larger, exhibited no deformities and greater capacity of parasitism, different from those produced from eggs where two parasitoids emerged. offspring longevity, however, was similar for females emerged from hosts from which one or two adults emerged. in conclusion, t. pretiosum was able to recognize previously parasitized eggs and the superparasitism reduced the parasitoid.reproductive success.
Alluvial-eolian interaction in a Cambrian rift margin: the Pedra das Torrinhas and Pedra Pintada formations (Guaritas Group, RS)
Marconato, André;Almeida, Renato P.;Santos, Maurício G. M.;Nóbrega, Jorge E.S.;Souza, Rogério B.;
Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652009000400018
Abstract: this work presents a study of selected outcrops from the pedra das torrinhas formation of the guaritas group (cambrian, camaqu? basin), near the basin bordering encantadas fault zone. the studied succession includes alluvial fan deposits that pass laterally into eolian deposits. sedimentary facies and architectural element analysis were performed, followed by sedimentary petrography and microscopic porosity analysis, aiming to characterize the porosity of the deposits and its spatial distribution. the main objective was to contribute to a better understanding of the porosity spatial distribution in depositional systems characterized by the interaction between alluvial and eolian processes, with special reference to deposits formed prior to the development of terrestrial plants. porosity values are related to depositional processes, with higher porosities associated to eolian dune deposits (mean of 8.4%), and lower porosity related to interdunes (mean of 3.4%) and alluvial fans (mean of 4.3%). architectural elements analysis revealed the spatial relationships of these deposits, a response to the interplay of the eolian and alluvial processes. the integration of porosity data reveals that the interaction of alluvial and eolian processes results in heterogeneous distribution of porosity at the facies association scale. eolian reworking of alluvial facies increases porosity whereas sheet-flood and other alluvial processes in the interdune areas reduce porosity.

Presentations of Schutzenberger groups of minimal subshifts
Jorge Almeida,Alfredo Costa
Mathematics , 2010, DOI: 10.1007/s11856-012-0139-4
Abstract: In previous work, the first author established a natural bijection between minimal subshifts and maximal regular J-classes of free profinite semigroups. In this paper, the Sch\"utzenberger groups of such J-classes are investigated, in particular in respect to a conjecture proposed by the first author concerning their profinite presentation. The conjecture is established for all non-periodic minimal subshifts associated with substitutions. It entails that it is decidable whether a finite group is a quotient of such a profinite group. As a further application, the Sch\"utzenberger group of the J-class corresponding to the Prouhet-Thue-Morse subshift is shown to admit a somewhat simpler presentation, from which it follows that it has rank three, and that it is non-free relatively to any pseudovariety of groups.
