Nú?ez, Lidia;D'Aquino, Miguel;Chirife, Jorge;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822001000200010
Abstract: the effect of temperature, concentration and contact time on the fungicidal effect of clove oleoresin dispersed in a concentrated sugar solution at 21 and 37oc, and clove oleoresin at 0.2 to 0.8% (v/v) was studied. the test microorganisms were candida albicans, penicillium citrinum, aspergillus niger and trichophyton mentagrophytes. the fungicidal effect was enhanced at 37oc; at this temperature short contact times (e.g. 1 min.) were enough to eliminate a microbial inoculum of 106 c.f.u./ml of c. albicans. although clove oleoresin caused important lethal effect, p. citrinum and a. niger were more resistant. after 60 minutes, clove oleoresin dispersed (0.4% v/v) in concentrated sugar solution caused a 99.6% reduction of the initial population (106 c.f.u./ml) of trichophyton mentagrophytes. the fungicidal activity of clove-sugar on c. albicans, after 2 min contact, was similar to that presented by disinfectants commonly used in hospitals, such as povidone-iodine and chloroxylenol.

Abstract: the objective of this systematic review is to present simulation as a teaching strategy for undergraduate nursing students, as described in brazilian studies. the search was carried out in the databases bdenf, lilacs and medline, using the following keywords: teaching, education, laboratory, simulation, nursing. the included studies were the scientific papers on simulation as a teaching strategy for undergraduate nursing students, published in portuguese, between january 1999 and september 2010. bardin's thematic content analysis was applied to data analysis. nine papers met the inclusion criteria, being classified into two categories: seven in "computer simulation", and two in "nursing laboratory". the results indicate that simulation encourages both the acquisition of psychomotor skills and self-confidence. yet, no clinical trial was found on the efficacy of simulation for improving nursing students' practice. thus, there is a need for further research on the subject.
Detecting adventitious transgenic events in a maize center of diversity

Electronic Journal of Biotechnology , 2011,
Abstract: background: the genetic diversity of maize in peru includes several landraces (within race clusters) and modern open pollinated and hybrid cultivars that are grown by farmers across various regions, thereby making this country a secondary center of diversity for this crop. a main topic of controversy in recent years refers to the unintended presence of transgenic events in locally grown cultivars at main centers of crop diversity. peru does not yet have biosafety regulations to control or permit the growing of genetically modified crops. hence, the aim of this research was to undertake a survey in the valley of barranca, where there were recent claims of authorized transgenic maize grown in farmers fields as well as in samples taken from feed storage and grain or seed trade centers. results: a total of 162 maize samples (134 from fields, 15 from local markets, eight from the collecting centers of poultry companies, from the local trading center and four samples from seed markets) were included for a qualitative detection by the polymerase chain reaction (pcr) of cauliflower mosaic virus (camv) 35s promoter (p35s) and nopaline synthase terminator (tnos) sequences, as well as for six transgenic events, namely bt11, nk603, t25, 176, tc1507 and mon810. the 134 maize samples from farmers fields were negative for cry1ab delta-endotoxin insecticidal protein and enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (epsps) using lateral flow strips. the pcr analysis did not detect any of the six transgenic events in samples from farmers fields, local markets, seed trading shops and the local collecting center. there were four transgenic events (t25, nk603, mon810 and tc1507) in grain samples from the barns of poultry companies. conclusions: this research could not detect, at the 95% probability level, transgenes in farmers' fields in the valley of barranca. the four transgenic events in grain samples from barns of poultry companies were not surprising because peru imports maiz
Analysis of volatiles in fluid inclusions by direct online crushing mass spectrometry
Jorge, Sandra;Coelho, Carlos E. S;Aquino-Neto, Francisco Radler de;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532011000300005
Abstract: a new tool has been increasingly used in organic geochemistry; it is the application of fluid inclusions hosted in minerals, mainly quartz, from rock samples recovered in basin wells. in this paper we develop a new practical screening method to identify the presence of petroleum in fluid inclusions from siliciclastic and carbonatic minerals. the method is called detection of petroleum inclusions and allows analyzing the presence of volatiles in oil fluid inclusions extracted by online crushing from cuttings samples. this method offers the advantage of working with solid samples, as a micro-scaled sealed vessel (mssv) system. moreover it is simple, relatively fast and presents a satisfactory reproducibility. for the successful analysis it is essential to carefully control the analytical procedures, including the cleaning of samples and blank runs. results were compared with previously reported methods

Abstract: The objective of the article was to evaluate the level of perception of undergraduate accounting students studying in the Federal District in regard to the causes of international differences in the procedures for the elaboration and presentation of company financial reports. To do so, a questionnaire was applied to accounting students from the five largest institutes of higher learning (IES) in the Federal District that offer an undergraduate course in accounting. Little convergence was observed in students’ opinions, revealing that they do not have a solid idea about the causes of international differences in financial reports. Clear evidence of this is that all items received varied answers. On the other hand, cluster analysis identified two large groups, in a certain way similar to what the literature considers to be more or less important. The research results reveal that based on the IES researched, the subject entitled Accounting Theory has not offered an adequate theoretical scope about international accounting, which makes for substantial divergence between the responses of students that have taken the subject and those that have not. Research results reveal that international accounting is an incipient topic in the academic environment and that solid opinions on the theme have yet to form. Keywords: Accounting graduation students. International differences. Financial Reporting.
