Spider mites associated to soybean in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: the objective of this work was to study the occurrence and geographic distribution of phytophagous mites associated to soybean in rio grande do sul, brazil. samplings were performed from january to may 2005 on genetically modified soybean (glyphosate-tolerant) crops, in 27 municipalities of six regions - alto vale do uruguai, campanha, depress?o central, planalto médio, miss?es and serra do sudeste. five phytophagous mite species belonging to the family tetranychidae - mononychellus planki, tetranychus desertorum, t. gigas, t. ludeni and t. urticae - occurred in 21, 12, 5, 3 and 14 municipalities, respectively. a map of rio grande do sul with the geographic distribution of each species is presented, as well as an illustrated dichotomous key to help the identification of the spider mites found.
Antibacterial Effect of Aqueous Extracts and Bioactive Chemical Compounds of Coffea canephora against Microorganisms Involved in Dental Caries and Periodontal Disease  [PDF]

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Coffea canephora aqueous extract (Cc), trigonelline (Tg) and 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) against cariogenic microorganisms: Streptococcus parasanguinis ATCC 903 (SP), Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595 (LR); and pathogens related to periodontal disease: Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 (PG), Fusobacterium nucleatum ATCC 25586 (FN), Prevotella intermedia ATCC 49046 (PI) and Prevotella nigrescens ATCC 33563 (PN). Different concentrations of Cc (0.15625 to 10 mg/mL), Tg and 5-CQA (0.005 to 10.24 mg/mL) were tested. Chlorhexidine (0.05%) was used as positive control and the substances without the inoculum comprised the blank control. The Cc showed bacteriostatic action against SP (MIC = 5 mg/mL) and LR (MIC = 10 mg/mL). Tg showed bacteriostatic action against SP (MIC = 2.56 to 1.28 mg/mL), LR (MIC = 2.56 mg/mL), PG (MIC = 2.56 to 1.28 mg/mL), FN (MIC = 5.12 mg/mL), PN (MIC = 2.56 mg/mL), and PI (MIC = 2.56 to 1.28 mg/mL). Also, Tg showed bactericide properties against SP (MBC = 2.56 mg/mL), PG (MBC = 2.56 mg/mL), FN (MBC = 10.24 mg/mL), PN (MBC = 5.12 mg/mL), and PI (MBC = 2.56 mg/mL). Although 5-CQA has previously shown activity against Streptococcus mutans, in the present study, it showed no activity against all tested microorganisms. C. canephora extract only showed antibacterial activity against cariogenic microorganisms, not presenting action against periodontal pathogens. It was concluded that trigonelline presented the best effect against all pathogens tested, therefore coffee extracts with higher trigonelline content should be tested against these specific pathogens.

Abstract: with the advent of globalization comes a new form of coexistence between societies, the possibility of which has helped to generate a tangle of cross-cultural field and allowed the establishment of universal values in local sites. this context coupled with mass culture promoted brands to produce complex and global cultural symbols. inspired by michel foucault's archaeological project, we elected a global brand to undergo a photo-ethnographic case study of mundane daily practices. this process project has enabled us to perform the analysis through an ordering, definition and description work, developed within the discursive field, allowing the results to reveal enunciative descriptions guided by brand marketing practices. descriptions revealed functions and their relations have allowed us to decipher the rules under which they were governed. the analysis revealed the relational threshold between global and local cultures and allowed us to unveil the links on this discursive web, allowing the understanding of how a transnational brand is established in a local culture reproducing a global culture. in this sense, we point out some ways to reflect on contemporary western societies.

Abstract: the advent of globalization has generated an entangled field of cross-cultures enabling the establishment of universal values in local media. this context and mass culture have promoted brands to become complex and global cultural symbols. our aim is to understand how a transnational brand can establish itself in a local culture reproducing a global one. inspired by michel foucault's archaeological project, we constructed a photographic corpus of the daily practices of a global brand. this was done by ordering, defining and describing within the discursive field, guided by brand marketing practices. the analysis revealed the discursive formations between global and local cultures and unveiled existing links in this network. our results can be used to reflect on both the importance assumed by brands in culture and the form assumed by contemporary western societies.

Abstract: O advento da globaliza o contribui para gerar um emaranhado campo de cruzamentos culturais e, assim, permite o estabelecimento de valores universais em meios locais. Esse contexto, aliado à cultura de massas, promoveu as marcas a símbolos culturais complexos e globais. Nosso objetivo foi buscar a compreens o de como é possível uma marca transnacional se estabelecer numa cultura local reproduzindo a cultura global. Inspirados no projeto arqueológico de Michel Foucault, construímos um corpus fotográ co de práticas cotidianas de uma marca global. Tal processo se deu por meio de um trabalho de ordena o, de ni o e descri o, elaborado no interior do campo discursivo, pautado nas a es de marketing da marca. A análise nos revelou as forma es discursivas entre culturas global e local e nos possibilitou desvelar as rela es existentes nessa teia. Abstract: O artigo prop e uma reflex o e análise crítica do processo de fazer história, como uma constru o dos homens, especialmente no que se refere a história da loucura e sua rela o com a Saúde (Mental) Pública. Neste contexto, faz a discuss o dos fatos e personagens e a importancia destes na constru o do CAPS Nossa Casa, um servi o extra-hospitalar pioneiro e que é referência na forma de tratar e cuidar deste personagem histórico, o "louco", e que acontece no bojo da Reforma Psiquiátrica Brasileira e do Movimento Sanitarista. O artigo enfatiza ainda a importancia destes servi os operarem dentro de uma rede integrada visando maior resolutividade, ressaltando o papel fundamental do gestor neste processo. Conclui com a idéia de que também em CAPS é possível haver processo de cronifica o e de reprodu o de lógicas manicomiais, chamando a aten o, por fim, do abandono evidente por parte do poder público, que a Nossa Casa vem sofrendo ao longo dos últimos anos.
Ocorrência de Tetranychus ogmophallos Ferreira & Flechtmann (Acari: Tetranychidae) em Amendoim no Estado de S?o Paulo

Abstract: high mite infestations were observed during two consecutive years (1999 and 2000) in peanut fields of cultivar iac-caiapó, at the adamantina experiment station of instituto agron?mico de campinas (iac). the mites were identified as tetranychus ogmophallos ferreira & flechtmann, and the symptoms consisted of an initial silver-like chlorosis on leaves, progressing to formation of a great ammount of web structures covering the plants. for a preliminary evaluation of the damage, two 1.000 m2 plots were marked during the 1998/99 field growing. one was not treated with pesticide and the other was chemically sprayed for mite control. in both plots, pod harvesting was done at three intervals, and pod yield within each plot was estimated as the average of harvesting intervals. comparison between treated and untreated plots indicated a 76,5% yield reduction due to mite infestation. t. ogmophallos has been previously known from arachis pintoi, a wild peanut species, but no report of its occurrence on cultivated peanut (arachis hipogaea) was known.
Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes in Water/Alcohol Solution Used by the Brazilian Agate Industry  [PDF]

Abstract: The agate dyeing industry has been commonly seen as a high-pollution industry. Dyeing wastewater treatment is considered one of the most important categories for water-pollution control, because of its intense colour and the high concentration of organic contaminants. Most dyes used in the process present minimal biodegradability due to aromatic organic compounds in their structure. Using a photocatalytic reactor, experiments were carried out to study the decolorization of a water solution containing 8% ethylic alcohol and 200 mg L1 of the dye Rhodamine B (RhB), the most difficult colorant to degrade among the used by the agate industry. The best conditions were further applied to treat the same agate water/ethyl alcohol solution containing a mixture of 200 mg L−1 of Rhodamine B (RhB), Crystal Violet (CV), Brilliant Green (BG), and Blood Red (BR). All the experiments were performed in a 2 L reactor equipped with ultraviolet (UV) lamps, at a wavelength of 365 nm, with powdered TiO2 or ZnO as the catalyst. The results indicated that the optimal decolorization conditions were attained with 2.5 g L1 of the catalyst at pH 10 and an irradiation time of 80 min. The process resulted in complete degradation of CV, BG and 80% - 90% degradation of RhB and BR. The catalyst ZnO presented a performance somewhat better than TiO2. It is possible to conclude that the process of heterogeneous photocatalysis is effective for decolorization of water streams from the agate industry.
Accuracy of the Simplified Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index in Rural Communities with Endemic Fluorosis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to compare the values of the Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index (TF index) for the determination of the prevalence of dental fluorosis using either all teeth (gold standard) or six upper anterior teeth (simplified TF index). The sample was made up of 396 individuals aged six to 22 years from three Brazilian cities with endemic fluorosis caused by the ingestion of water with high fluoride concentration. The prevalence of dental fluorosis was evaluated by a single trained examiner with excellent intraexaminer agreement (kappa = 0.95). Intraexaminer reproducibilities were calculated at tooth level. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of the simplified TF compared to gold standard were 90.6 (95%CI: 86.6 to 93.6), 100 (95%CI: 95.3 to 100), 100 (95%CI: 98.3 to 100) and 77.5 (95%CI: 69.8 to 83.5), respectively. The ROC value was 0.953 (95%CI: 0.933 to 0.973). The simplified TF index proved suitable for determining the prevalence of dental fluorosis in regions with endemic fluorosis caused by the ingestion of water with high concentrations of fluoride.
A Biosensor Using Poly(4-Aminophenol)/acetylcholinesterase modified graphite electrode for the detection of dichlorvos

Abstract: the properties of poly(4-aminophenol) modified graphite electrode as material for the immobilization of acetylcholinesterase were investigated by the cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. the polymer was deposited on graphite electrode surface by the oxidation of 4-aminophenol and then acetylcholinesterase was immobilized on the surface of the electrode. the biosensor coupled in the continuous flow system was employed for the detection of dichlorvos. the detection and quantification limits were 0.8 and 2.4 μmol l-1 dichlorvos, respectively. graphite electrodes modified with the poly(4-aminophenol) showed to be an efficient and promising material for immobilization of acetylcholinesterase enzyme. the proposed method requires simple parts which are easy to build, involves only one biosensor and the potentiometric detection is simple.
