Experimental Study on Split-Ring Resonators with Different Slit Widths  [PDF]

Metamaterial one-dimensional periodic structures are composed of split-ring resonators, which can display electric permittivity and magnetic permeability simultaneously negative, are studied experimentally. In the present study, each resonator is made up of two concentric circular copper rings patterned on a substrate of kapton, with slits diametrically opposite each other and with the line of the splits along the longitudinal direction of the periodic array containing seven split rings evenly spaced. The experiments consist in inserting the metamaterial slab into a square waveguide of side length 6 mm, corresponding to a cutoff frequency of 25 GHz. Transmission bands due to magnetic and electrical responses are identified for slits with aperture widths of 1 mm and 2 mm, centered at 5.67 and 6.12 GHz frequencies, respectively, values well below the 25 GHz frequency cutoff, so characterizing a medium with negative permeability and

Abstract: in this paper i aim to discuss the great question of the extension of compulsory education in european countries; this extension is politically presented as a greater benefit for all citizens. although public policies that intend to implement a longer school are focused on the compulsory aspect, this new education requires an appropriate response to its inherent and less focused universality: a time of quality education for all children and young people, without exception. in order to think about that, first i update the data relating to compulsory schooling in europe and the relative degree of compliance, and then discuss the issue of universality versus compulsory, arguing that the guarantee of the first precedes the application of the second and, in educational terms, that one is the larger issue; thirdly, i present some of the main measures taken in various european countries to welcome newcomers to schooling , to combat drop-outs and lack of compliance with the new compulsory education; fourthly, i discuss the relevance of these measures in light of the ultimate goal of greater universality of an quality education for all, especially for those newcomers to the compulsory schooling of more than nine years' duration. in this discussion i adopt a three-dimensional perspective: ethical and epistemological, socio-political and polycentric and finally academic. with this i advocate the need to use any strategy of school diversification and flexible curriculum as a springboard for more and better education for each and every one, through increased educational personalization, avoiding the easy fall on reproduction in school environment, of the starting social stratification, poverty and exclusion.

Abstract: two biopsychosocial metatheories are identified and characterized: the hierarchical or interactionist, has been the background conceptual framework for health psychology in the last two decades, and the integrative or dialectical, that is proposed as the inspiration to this discipline. a theoretical and methodological contrast between these two metatheories is presented with reference to several items: cross-disciplinary work and team work, mind-body relationship, person's conceptual-affective autonomy, therapist-client relationship, compliance with preventive/cura-tive regimens and health and disease didactics, in order to understand their implications to health psychology.

Abstract: the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) is a disorder with a chronic developmental nature. although it attenuates with age, particularly its hyperkinetic and impulsive aspects, the continuous presence of attention deficit symptoms affects the capacity of responding to environmental stimuli throughout life. recent studies have shown that between 50 and 80 per cent of subjects who revealed adhd in their childhood, have experienced significant difficulties connected with this disorder in their adulthood. thus, the present article aims to present the developmental course of subjects with adhd, from infancy to adulthood, to demonstrate that this disorder significantly affects not only the first years but the whole life cycle.
Entropy change of an ideal gas determination with no reversible process

Abstract: as is stressed in literature [1], [2], the entropy change, ds, during a given irreversible process is determined through the substitution of the actual process by a reversible one which carries the system between the same equilibrium states. this can be done since entropy is a state function. however this may suggest to the students the idea that this procedure is mandatory. we try to demystify this idea, showing that we can preserve the original process. another motivation for this paper is to emphasize the relevance of the reservoirs concept, in particular the work reservoir, which is usually neglected in the literature2. starting by exploring briefly the symmetries associated to the first law of thermodynamics, we obtain an equation which relates both the system and neighborhood variables and allows entropy changes determination without using any auxiliary reversible process. then, simulations of an irreversible ideal gas process are presented using mathematica?, which we believe to be of pedagogical value in emphasizing the exposed ideas and clarifying some possible misunderstandings relating to the difficult concept of entropy [4].

Abstract: Quasilinear preferences on a public good and a numeraire good are limits of preferences where both goods are normal. The set of equilibria of the voluntary contribution (or private provision) game is easily characterized under quasilinearity by: top valuators aggregately contribute their common stand-alone contribution, whereas non-top valuators contribute nothing. Because, as long as preferences are randomly selected, there will typically be a single top valuator, it follows that, typically, the equilibrium is unique, with all players but one contributing nothing, hence “free riding” in the sense of the ordinary English usage of the expression. The upper-hemicontinuity of the Nash equilibrium correspondence implies that this is also the case when both goods are strictly normal, but the wealth effects on the public good are small.

Abstract: I discuss recent developments on non-leptonic and radiative kaon decays mainly related to direct CP-violation within the combined ChPT and 1/N_c expansion approaches. In particular, I review the status of K -> pi pi, epsilon_K', direct CP-violating K+ -> 3 pi Dalitz plot slope g and decay rate asymmetries, and the Standard Model prediction for Br(K_L -> pi0 e+ e-).
