Abstract: The aim of this study was to evidence the clinical efficacy of an alcohol-free mouthwash containing 5.0% (W/V) Brazilian green propolis (MGP 5%) for the control of plaque and gingivitis. Twenty five subjects, men and women aging between 18 and 60 years old (35±9), were included in a clinical trials phase II study who had a minimum of 20 sound natural teeth, a mean plaque index of at least 1.5 (PI), and a mean gingival index of at least 1.0 (GI). They were instructed to rinse with 10 mL of mouthwash test for 1 minute, immediately after brushing in the morning and at night. After 45 and 90 days using mouthwash, the results showed a significant reduction in plaque and in gingival index when compared to samples obtained in baseline. These reductions were at 24% and 40%, respectively (<.5). There were no important side effects in soft and hard tissues of the mouth. In this study, the MGP 5% showed evidence of its efficacy in reducing PI and GI. However, it is necessary to perform a clinical trial, double-blind, randomized to validate such effectiveness.

Abstract: the main objective of this paper is to present and discuss the best methods to estimate live above ground biomass in the atlantic forest. the methods presented and conclusions are the products of a workshop entitled "estimation of biomass and carbon stocks: the case of atlantic rain forest". aboveground biomass (agb) in tropical forests is mainly contained in trees. tree biomass is a function of wood volume, obtained from the diameter and height, architecture and wood density (dry weight per unit volume of fresh wood). it can be quantified by the direct (destructive) or indirect method where the biomass quantification is estimated using mathematical models. the allometric model can be site specific when elaborated to a particular ecosystem or general that can be used in different sites. for the atlantic forest, despite the importance of it, there are only two direct measurements of tree biomass, resulting in allometric models specific for this ecosystem. to select one or other of the available models in the literature to estimate agb it is necessary take into account what is the main question to be answered and the ease with which it is possible to measure the independent variables in the model. models that present more accurate estimates should be preferred. however, more simple models (those with one independent variable, usually dbh) can be used when the focus is monitoring the variation in carbon storage through the time. our observations in the atlantic forest suggest that pan-tropical relations proposed by chave et al. (2005) can be confidently used to estimated tree biomass across biomes as long as tree diameter (dbh), height, and wood density are accounted for in the model. in atlantic forest, we recommend the quantification of biomass of lianas, bamboo, palms, tree ferns and epiphytes, which are an important component in this ecosystem. this paper is an outcome of the workshop entitled "estimation of biomass and carbon stocks: the case of atlantic rain fore

Abstract: The objective of the study was to evaluate the carcass physical composition and the meat quality of 5/8Charolais (Ch) 3/8Nellore (Ne) and 5/8Ne 3/8Ch steers and cull cows, feedlot finished, submitted to different feeding frequencies, two (7 and 19h), three (7, 13 and 19h) or four (7, 11, 15 and 19h) times a day. Average age of the animals at the end of the experimental period was 23 months for steers and 68 months for cows. The diet, 40:60 roughage:concentrate ratio, contained 2869 kcal of digestible energy/kg of dry matter. Feeding two, three or four times a day did not affect the characteristics studied. Cows carcasses showed higher fat percentage (24.56% vs 20.54%), while steers were superior in muscle percentage (64.93% vs 61.04%). However, the categories did not differ in bone percentage neither in muscle+fat:bone ratio. Genetic group did not affect carcass physical composition neither meat quality. Significant interaction between animal categories x genetic group for meat texture was observed. Cows of the 5/8Ch 3/8Ne genetic group showed coarser meat texture in relation to steers, while for the 5/8Ne 3/8Ch group no difference between categories was observed. The increase in the supply of feeding of two to tree or four times doesn’t influence the carcass physical composition and characteristics of meat. Cows showed carcass with higher fat, while the steers showed higher percentage of muscle. The finished of cows in feedlot resulted in meat quality similar to steers. The genetic group did not influence the carcass physical composition and meat quality. Keywords: Fat, marbling, muscle, tenderness, texture.

Abstract: the aim of this article is to enhance the understanding of the relationship between presenteeism and positive organizational behaviour. according to this, we intend to evaluate the link between two dimensions of presenteeism (completing work and avoided distraction) and one dimension of positive psychological capital (hope). the sample consisted of 158 workers mainly of health and research fields. results show that the presenteeism factor of avoided distraction is associated with the lower hope cluster. we suggest new trends concerning the implementation of presenteeism reduction programmes, in order to increase positive organizational behaviour. this study also revealed the good psychometric properties of the stanford presenteeism scale (sps-6). being a first approach, we propose new ideas concerning the development of those new fields of study.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate genotypes of wheat depending on doses of N in order to determine the best value of N and the components of productivity of wheat. Experiment was carried out in Pato Branco—PR in soil classified as Eutrophic typical RED LATOSOL. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in 3 × 5 (× N doses genotypes), with three repetitions. The genotypes were: CD 108, CD 115 and BRS 220, and the doses of n were: zero; 20; 40; 80 and 120 kg of N·ha-1, applied at the beginning of tillering. After harvest assessed number of Spike (NE), Tang (EC) length, grains per Spike (GE), mass of thousand grains (MMG), grain yield (R) and weight/HL (PH), application of N increased the NE and R, and however decreased to MMG. The genotypes differed among themselves, featuring better performance of the NE (the BRS 220), CE (the CD 115) and R (the CD 108). There were positive correlations between the doses of N with the NE and R and be-tween NE with the R, and negative correlation between doses of N with the MMG. It is concluded that the NE is the main factor that affects the R with N supply.

Abstract: a study was made on the problem of short-term operational planning for hydroelectric power systems. consideration was given to multiple reservoirs in a cascade and the effect that the variation of the head has in the operating efficiency. this non-linear effect coupled with the cascaded hydro configuration tends to produce a complex problem of large dimension. for its resolution an optimization method based on non-linear programming is considered. the results are compared with the method currently used based on linear programming. the results of the computational simulation show that the non-linear programming is the most suitable optimization method.

Abstract: this paper analyzes the problem of short-term operational planning of thermoelectric power systems with environmental constraints. the growing worldwide environmental concern to limit emission of greenhouse gases led to the kyoto protocol, introducing new constraints in the operation of thermoelectric power systems. the traditional tools that aid decision making must be adapted to this new framework. the problem consist of deciding the commitment of the units and the optimal generation profile for each thermal unit committed throughout the time horizon. for its solution, an optimization method based on dynamic programming and non-linear programming is considered, building a new decision support system in fortran language which simultaneously considers fuel costs and emissions. the results of the computational simulation applied to a practical case are show and discussed
