Leal, Raquel Franco;Silva, Patricia V. V. Tapia;Ayrizono, Maria de Lourdes Setsuko;Fagundes, Joo José;Amstalden, Eliane M. Ingrid;Coy, Cláudio Saddy Rodrigues;

Abstract: context: desmoid tumors constitute one of the most important extraintestinal manifestations of familial adenomatous polyposis. the development of desmoids is responsible for increasing morbidity and mortality rates in cases of familial adenomatous polyposis. objectives: to evaluate the occurrence of desmoid tumors in familial adenomatous polyposis cases following prophylactic colectomy and to present patient outcome. methods: between 1984 and 2008, 68 patients underwent colectomy for familial adenomatous polyposis at the school of medical sciences teaching hospital, university of campinas, sp, brazil. desmoid tumors were found in nine (13.2%) of these patients, who were studied retrospectively by consulting their medical charts with respect to clinical and surgical data. results: of nine patients, seven (77.8%) were submitted to laparotomy for tumor resection. median age at the time of surgery was 33.9 years (range 22-51 years). desmoid tumors were found in the abdominal wall in 3/9 cases (33.3%) and in an intra-abdominal site in the remaining six cases (66.7%). median time elapsed between ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and diagnosis of desmoid tumor was 37.5 months (range 14-60 months), while the median time between colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis and diagnosis was 63.7 months (range 25-116 months). in 6/9 (66.7%) patients with desmoid tumors, the disease was either under control or there was no evidence of tumor recurrence at a follow-up visit made a mean of 63.1 months later (range 12-240 months). conclusions: desmoid tumors were found in 13.2% of cases of familial adenomatous polyposis following colectomy; therefore, familial adenomatous polyposis patients should be followed-up and surveillance should include abdominal examination to detect signs and symptoms. treatment options include surgery and clinical management with antiestrogens, antiinflammatory drugs or chemotherapy.

Abstract: the objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of feeding diets containing corn silage or sugarcane bagasse plus high moisture corn or dry corn grain on performance and carcass characteristics of finishing young bulls. twenty-eight santa gertrudis young bulls averaging 10 months of age and 245 kg of body weight were assigned to a completely randomized block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. animals were maintained in individual pens during 142 days and were fed sugarcane bagasse (12% diet dm) or corn silage (20% of diet dm) supplemented with two energy sources: high moisture corn or dry corn grain. the high moisture corn was grounded and ensiled with 70% of dm. there was no significant interaction between forage and corn type for any measured variable. feeding sugarcane bagasse as the sole dietary forage source was satisfactory despite the reduced body weight gain, feed efficiency, carcass weight and dressing, and fat thickness compared to corn silage. the average daily body weight gain with feeding sugarcane bagasse was 1.3 kg while that with feeding corn silage was 1.5 kg. intake of dm was not affected by forage type or corn source. high moisture corn improved feed efficiency by 9.7% and reduced liver weight compared to dry corn but no significant differences were observed for the remaining variables.
The Relationship between Portuguese Adolescent Perception of Parental Styles, Social Support, and School Behaviour  [PDF]
José Castro Silva, José Morgado, Joo Maroco
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2012.37074
Abstract: The present article describes preliminary results of a study that aims to analyse the relationship among Portuguese adolescent perception of parental styles, social support received from family and peers and their school behaviour. Participants were 537 adolescents aged between 14 and 16. The “Parental Author- ity Questionnaire”, the “Perceived Social Support-Friends Scale” and “Perceived Social Support-Family Scale” were used to measure adolescent perceptions. Overall, Portuguese adolescents perceive their parents as using predominantly a democratic parental style. Associations between school behaviour and parental styles show that “well-behaved” adolescents perceive their parents as less permissive. On the other hand, adolescents who misbehave perceive their parents as more permissive and authoritarian. As regards the relationship between perceived school behaviour and social support, adolescents recognise receiving greater support from peers than from family, and adolescents who “often behave badly” are those who refer to receiving less social support, either from the family or peers.
Nota s?bre os depósitos arenosos recentes do litoral sul-brasileiro
Bigarella, Joo José;
Boletim do Instituto Oceanográfico , 1954, DOI: 10.1590/S0373-55241954000100010
Abstract: in this paper the author studies some sand samples from the coastal plain and beaches of south brazil. he modifies the former opinion about the origin of the hard and brown layers of sand, before named by him mangrovito. he suggests the action of the underground water rich in organic matter as being responsible for the hardening of the ancient shore sands.

Abstract: the present paper contains an approach to systematize the study of the state of paraná coastal plains, in the southern part of brazil. it contains in general some geographical and geological data, documented by maps, sketches and photographs. in the initial stage the coastal plain represents a marine ingression, caused by faulting. this ingression penetrated the valleys of a not yet determinated geological landscape. ended the movement of deeping by faulting begins the epirogenic ascension and building of the barriers and beach ridges. an intensive sedimentation caused the lagoons and bays obstruction. this work refers mainly to t33 he sedimentary formations and the coastal plains is classified in the following way for the study in consideration to the morphology and origin: marine sedimentation - shore, barrier and beach ridge; intermediary sedimentation - mangrove swamps, mud and sand banks and mangrovito; continental sedimentation - dunes and terrestrial alluvion. there are also presented some data about the rocky coast and vegetation.

The Behavior of Zeta Potential of Silica Suspensions  [PDF]
José Antonio Alves Júnior, Joo Baptista Baldo
New Journal of Glass and Ceramics (NJGC) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/njgc.2014.42004
Abstract: Zeta potential is one of the most relevant parameters controlling the rheological behavior of ceramic suspensions. In this work, it was observed that for pH values below the isoelectric point (IEP), the positive value of zeta potential of water suspensions of α-quartz and α-cristobalite, experiences a sudden steep increase with the increase in specific surface area of the powders. For pH values above the IEP, the zeta potential values of crystalline forms of silica (α-quartz and α-cristobalite), get gradually more negative with the increase in pH. Conversely in the case of vitreous silica, for pH values above 6, there occurs a steep change towards more negative values of zeta potential than those presented by quartz and cristobalite. These findings have not yet been accounted for in the DLVO theory but may provide subsidies for better understanding of how to stabilize and destabilize crystalline and vitreous silica water suspensions.
