Laparoscopia diagnóstica em c?es: análise de 27 casos
SCHOSSLER, Joo Eduardo;
Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-95961998000300006
Abstract: laparoscopy was used for the visualization of abdominal viscera of 27 dogs afflicted with different pathologies. in all cases general anesthesia was applied. an incision was made on the ventral midline approximately 1cm caudal to the navel. at this point a trocar was introduced for the production of pneumoperitoneum. after that, the optical probe was introduced for inspection of the abdominal cavity. the different organs were visually identified by their external morphology. moreover, the exam also allowed the identification of different pathologies. in two cases of splenic and pancreatic atrophy, as well as in case of hepatic necrosis the laparoscopic examination was instrumental for the understanding of the disease, leading to a final diagnostic confirmed by histopathological analysis. the presence of hepato-frenic adhesion was immediately identified in one case, helping in the planning of corrective surgery. cases of piometritis in initial stages were identified thanks to the laparoscopic exam, since biochemical and radiological data was highly inconclusive. the laparoscopy determined the impossibility of surgical removal of two hepatic tumors and one case of intestinal neoplasia. the results most likely influenced the request for euthanasia by the owners. the present observations agree with citations in which laparoscopy cannot avoid major surgery, however it gives valuable information regarding the conditions of the tissues and the extension of the lesions.

Two-stage hepatectomy uses compensatory liver regeneration after a first noncurative hepatectomy to enable a second curative resection. Herein we report the tecnical aspects of the management of a thirty-seven years-old woman with colorectal metastasis to the liver eligible because single resection could not achieve complete treatment, even in combination with chemotherapy, portal embolization, or radiofrequency, but tumors could be totally removed by two sequential resections.

Green Tea (Camellia sinensis): Hypocholesterolemic Effects in Humans and Anti-Inflammatory Effects in Animals  [PDF]
Márcia Reto, Cristina Almeida, Joo Rocha, Bruno Sepodes, Maria-Eduardo Figueira
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2014.522231
Abstract: In its essence, tea is an infusion of Camellia sinensis leaves and it is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, aside water. Animal and epidemiological studies have associated green tea consumption with several health benefits, which include hypocholesterolemic effect and anti-in-flammatory activity. In this study catechins levels of green tea and its effect on the lipid profile of humans were evaluated as well as the protective effects against H2O2-mediated damage in human fibroblasts and anti-inflammatory activity of ()-epigallocatechingallate (EGCG). The daily consumption of 1200 mL of green tea for 30 days by 15 human volunteers promoted the decrease of cholesterol and LDL levels after 15 days, but this effect was not persistent after 30 days. No changes were observed in lipid profile after the consumption of green tea capsules. EGCG, a major green tea catechin, demonstrated an anti-inflammatory action in rats and an antioxidant effect in cultured human fibroblasts.

Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science (JBBS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jbbs.2015.56021
Abstract: Literature in finance and neurosciences shows that male and female differ in many relevant issues concerning financial decision investment. Here, we studied the EEG activity recorded while volunteers were playing a stock trading game to investigate these gender differences. 20 males and 20 females made 100 trading decisions using a portfolio of 200 shares of 7 different companies. Males and females were equally successful in earning above the market. sLORETA was used to identify sources of EEG recorded 2 seconds before trading decision. Results showed that male and female used different sets of neuron to make equally successful financial decisions.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.72027
Abstract: Executive functions (EFs) are essential in human functioning, and are an important field of study in neuropsychology. One of the most common disorders concerning EFs is the alteration in response inhibition, fundamental to an adequate behavior. This study aimed to show the initial normative data of 35 healthy subjects (22 women and 13 men, with a mean age of 42.60 years old [SD = 14.36]) in a free version of the Go/No-go task. We were able to identify a clear influence of the variable age in reaction time concerning response inhibition and attention.
Preeclampsia: a bioinformatics approach through protein-protein interaction networks analysis
Eduardo Tejera, Joo Bernardes, Irene Rebelo
BMC Systems Biology , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1752-0509-6-97
Abstract: We confirmed the well known relationship between preeclampsia and cardiovascular diseases but also identified statistically significant relationships with respect to cancer and aging. Moreover, significant metabolic pathways such as apoptosis, cancer and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction have also been identified by enrichment analysis. We obtained FLT1, VEGFA, FN1, F2 and PGF genes with the highest scores by hubs analysis; however, we also found other genes as PDIA3, LYN, SH2B2 and NDRG1 with high scores.The applied methodology not only led to the identification of well known genes related to preeclampsia but also to propose new candidates poorly explored or completely unknown in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, which eventually need to be validated experimentally. Moreover, new possible connections were detected between preeclampsia and other diseases that could open new areas of research. More must be done in this area to resolve the identification of unknown interactions of proteins/genes and also for a better integration of metabolic pathways and diseases.Preeclampsia is a pregnancy related disease associated with hypertension, proteinuria and increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, without known underlying mechanism and preventive treatment [1,2]. On the other hand, the future health or possible risks of women with previous history of preeclampsia are important areas of investigation. In this direction, it is well known the increased risk of future cardiovascular disease and renal dysfunction, however, other risks are also being discussed [1,3-5]. Owing to the morbidity and mortality of this pregnancy related disease and the possible multifactorial causes involved [1-5], several experimental procedures have been applied by researchers in the last two decades, evidently, generating an elevated number of unprocessed information.Although some bioinformatic analysis has been performed in particular microarray assays [6,7], an extensive data
Conceptual and methodological aspects of relations between discrimination and health in epidemiological studies
Bastos, Joo Luiz;Faerstein, Eduardo;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2012000100019
Abstract: this article addresses conceptual and methodological aspects of the relations between discrimination and health from an epidemiological perspective. definitions of discrimination and related constructs are reviewed, and the main theories underlying their association with health are presented. scales developed to assess discrimination are discussed, in conjunction with a new instrument, devised to operationalize the concept in brazilian epidemiological surveys. as a relatively unpredictable and uncontrollable source of psychosocial stress, discrimination has been consistently associated with adverse health outcomes and behaviors, particularly mental disorders, smoking, and alcohol use. however, progress in the area depends partly on dealing with aspects related to the assessment of the phenomenon, such as the definition of a construct map and simultaneous measurement of different types of discrimination. research involving these aspects will enhance our understanding of discrimination and its health consequences, thus increasing our ability to reduce its social occurrence.
