Uma república entre dois mundos: Inconfidência Mineira, historiografia e temporalidade
Furtado, Joo Pinto;
Revista Brasileira de História , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-01882001000300005
Abstract: this study is an attempt to make a new reading and a criticism of some of the researches and evidences about the inconfidência mineira (1789). it aims at contributing to the criticism of some current theses on the subject, mainly those that corroborate the existence of a defined national and liberal project to which the inconfidentes adhered. brewed in a context of transition between the ancien regime and the modern age in rank values such as honor and precedence clashed with emerging class perspectives such as wealth and property, the movement was the expression of ambiguities and contradictions typical of that period. its performers, actions and projects can be better understood if considered in the context of social and economic heterogeneity which the movement?s political content and meaning directly express instead of the context of a strong ideological cohesiveness around a pre-defined project for a nation.

Association of HTLV-I with Arnold Chiari syndrome and syringomyelia
Viana, Gra?a Maria de Castro;Diniz Neto, Joo Arnaud;Furtado, Igor de Sousa;Binda Júnior, José Roberto;Tanaka, Bárbara Neiva;Nascimento, Maria do Desterro Soares Brand?o;
Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702008000600018
Abstract: htlv-i is associated with a broad spectrum of manifestations, including tropical spastic paraparesis and adult t-cell leukemia/lymphoma. arnold chiari syndrome is a condition characterized by herniation of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. this condition should be suspected in all patients with headache and impaired motor coordination. syringomyelia is a developmental anomaly that leads to the formation of an intramedullary cavity. its clinical presentation is classically characterized by syringomyelic dissociation of sensation, with suspended distribution in the proximal portion of the trunk and upper limbs and preservation in other regions. we report here a case of association of the three diseases, which is rare in clinical practice, illustrating the difficulty in the diagnosis and therapeutic management of these conditions.
Institui??es e políticas industriais e tecnológicas: reflex?es a partir da experiência brasileira
Suzigan, Wilson;Furtado, Joo;
Estudos Econ?micos (S?o Paulo) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-41612010000100001
Abstract: on the basis of brazilian institutions and policies for industry and technology, and taking as reference some successful international experiences, this paper investigates the reasons why, even when they are well formulated, industrial and technology policies face serious implementation problems in countries that are trying to catch up with the leading industrial economies. the results show that most of the problems are related to the "aging" of institutions, which are locked into old practices of policy-making, and also to the weakening of their political and financial position vis-à-vis macroeconomic policy institutions. the paper suggests the need of an institutional reform, although recognizing that such reform faces difficult technical and above all political obstacles.
Política industrial e desenvolvimento
Suzigan, Wilson;Furtado, Joo;
Revista de Economia Política , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572006000200001
Abstract: this paper aims at contributing to the debate on industrial policy and economic development in brazil. at first, theoretical approaches that support industrial policy-making are discussed, with emphasis on the neoschumpeterian/evolutionary approach, which focuses on innovation as prime mover of economic development and on the co-evolution of technologies, institutions, and industries and firms structures. next, such an approach is applied to explain some successful experiences of industrial policy-making and economic development in brazil up to the end of the 1970s, and the failures to implement such a policy from the 1980s onwards. finally, the present government industrial policy is evaluated, arguing that although it has some positive aspects like the focus on innovation, clearly defined targets and a new institutional organization, it fails as an economic development policy because of weaknesses such as incompatibility with macroeconomic policy, inconsistencies of policy instruments, deficiencies in infrastructure and in the science, technology and innovation system, and lack of coordination and political drive.

Competitividade internacional e tecnologia: uma análise da estrutura das exporta??es brasileiras
Pereira, Wellington;Porcile, Gabriel;Furtado, Joo;
Economia e Sociedade , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182011000300003
Abstract: in this work, international trade is used as a specific vantage point to analyze the technological intensity of brazil′s productive structure. exports with a higher technological intensity indicate greater local technological capabilities, this leading to a more dynamic international insertion regarding terms of trade. several indicators are used to measure this intensity, among which are the destination of brazilian exports and a comparison of brazilian and oecd exports. these are used to assess the extent to which structural change in brazil has favored sectors in which technical change and demand growth are higher. lastly, a matrix of trade dynamism is constructed, crossing the indicators of technological intensity with the index of revealed comparative advantage.
Estruturas de governan?a em arranjos ou sistemas locais de produ??o
Suzigan, Wilson;Garcia, Renato;Furtado, Joo;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X2007000200017
Abstract: the aim of this paper is to discuss the issue of governance in local production systems. first, a set of factors that condition the existence and the structure of governance are developed, and then the main analytical approaches are summarized. on the basis of these analytical approaches, and taking into account the factors that influence governance, the paper presents two illustrative cases as examples of success and failure in the establishment of governance structures in local production systems. it concludes that governance structures in local production systems are effectively conditioned, in each case, by specific characteristics such as: production structure, kind of product and its technological base, form of production organization, form of market insertion, existence of lead firms and active local institutions, and the social, cultural and political context. the overall conclusion is that local private and public governance structures are superior and that public policies can play a relevant role in the development of local production systems.

Farias, Maryzélia Furtado de;Saad, Joo Carlos Cury;
Acta Scientiarum. Agronomy , 2011, DOI: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i1.1763
Abstract: irrigation is an important practice in chrysanthemum growing, but water management has been neglected, resulting in quality losses and yield reduction. the experiment was conducted at the steltenpool farm, in the holambra ii district of the city of paranapanema (23o4's and 49o00'w). the aim of this research was to identify the best substrate water tension that could assure quality and high yield for the chrysanthemum, puritan cultivar. treatments were composed of six levels of substrate water tension: -2, -3, -4, -6, -10 and -30 kpa. results showed that -2, -6 and -10 kpa substrate water tension resulted in the highest number of pots with a1 quality, considered the highest level in the grower's scale. postharvest was also evaluated and plants irrigated when substrate water tension reached -30 kpa presented longer durability.
