Zhongguo Shi, Jing Li
Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2011.44055
Abstract: Since the middle age of 1980s, China has made great performance at economic growth, and greatly improved its innovation level. As the representation index of innovation activity, patents number growth is also significant. This paper constructed quintic overdetermined equation of one variable to simulate the trend of patent number varying with the time from 1985 to 2010, made use of Matlab Software and took the solution of simulation model. By comparing the simulation curve and real data curve, good agreement is obtained. After F-test and comparison between the simulation data and real data of 2008, 2009, 2010 respectively, it is believed that the simulation model is reliable. Based on this model, scientific estimation about the variation of Chinese patents from 2011 to 2014 is presented.

iBusiness (IB) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ib.2012.42011
Abstract: Since 1980s, China has made great performance at economic growth, and greatly improved its innovation level. As one of the most important aspect of emerging technology industry, biotechnology industry has also gotten great development. And, as the most important representation index of innovation activity, number and growth of biotechnology patents are also significant. Using OECD’s standard of biotechnology patents as the method to collect the data of biotechnology patents, this paper got detailed data of biotechnology patents in China, including spatial distribution data across 31 province, autonomous region, municipality directly under the central government, and time series data from 1985 to 2010. And further, this paper constructed quintic overdetermined equation of one variable to simulate the trend of patent number varying with the time from 1985 to 2010, made use of Matlab Software and took the solution of simulation model. After F-test, it is believed that the simulation model is reliable. Based on this model, scientific estimation about the distribution of biotechnology patents in China from 2011 to 2015 is presented.

Journal of Transportation Technologies (JTTs) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jtts.2013.32A002
Abstract:

This study aims at analyzing various extents of transportation equity change and the accessibility change of cities along High Speed Rail (HSR) line in China. To evaluate the accessibility change and transportation equity, certain cities along the transportation corridor which the successfully operating WuGuang HSR lies in are selected as samples of influenced ones first. Cities’ connection with HSR and their sizes are considered as choosing criteria. Weighted mean travel time and Generalized weighed travel time, which integrated with generalized cost, are both calculated in the two different scenarios to indicate accessibility changes of each city. The two scenarios are with or without the advent of WuGuang HSR. Accessibilities in different scenarios were carefully contrasted. It was found out that there is no significant change in the mean accessibility aspect of the region between the two scenarios. Then transportation equity issue of the transportation corridor is discussed based on the results of Gini coefficient using the data of Passenger Transportation Balance index. Passenger Transportation Balance index is proposed in this article to indicate the how much is one city’s transportation demand satisfied. The research found that cities had HSR stations built-in all attained a more accessibility improvement comparing with the others. And the gap between the accessibilities of the cities along the HSR line and those which are not is relatively wider. However, the equity evaluation using Transportation Balance Gini Coefficient reveals that massive investment in HSR has no potent evidence for equity improvement.

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the correlation between cognitive function and the Chinese medicine syndrome characteristics of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI).Methods: A total of 774 subjects (age from 41 to 87 years old) from Beijing of China accepted neuropsychological assessments and differentiation of Chinese medicine syndromes. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and clinic dementia rating (CDR) were used to access the global cognitive function; the Hachinski ischemia scale (HIS) and the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) were used for differential diagnosis; the ability of daily living (ADL) scale was used to assess the ability of daily living; the clock drawing test was used to access the executive function; the investigation of syndrome manifestations and the syndrome differentiation scale of vascular dementia (SDSVD) were used for diagnosis of syndrome manifestations. According to the diagnostic criteria of vascular cognitive impairment, subjects were subgrouped as normal cognition (NC) group and VCI group, and then the correlation between the cognitive functions and Chinese medicine syndromes was analyzed. Results: The correlation between cognitive scales and Chinese medical syndrome: in the VCI group, the syndrome of phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices showed negative correlation with the scores of MMSE and CDT (r=-0.525, r=-0.321, P=0.000, P=0.001), and the ADL demonstrated positive correlation to the syndrome (r=0.424, P=0.000). The correlation between cognitive function and Chinese medical syndrome: the phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices was closely correlated with the total orientation, time orientation and place orientation (r=-0.451, r=-0.448, r=-0.392, P=0.001, P=0.000, P=0.004); instant word recall and delayed word recall were closely correlated with the syndrome of phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices (r=-0.355, r=-0.225, P=0.000, P=0.021); calculation/attention, language function and executive function had negative correlation to the syndrome of phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices (r=-0.379, r=-0.448, r=-0.321, P=0.000, P=0.000, P=0.013). The scores of orientation, calculation/attention, delayed word recall and language function in the patients with phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices were significantly lower than the patients with non-phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices (P<0.05).Conclusion: The syndrome of phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices is significantly correlated to the scores of MMSE and ADL, indicating that the phlegm turbid blocking upper orifices is related to the cognitive function and ability of daily liv
The Application of Constructivism: Activities for Enlivening Comprehensive English Class

English Language Teaching , 2013, DOI: 10.5539/elt.v6n2p63
Abstract: The Comprehensive English Course (CEC) plays a vital role in English language learning for college students in China. However, students’ motivation for this course is low due to the fact that they are bored with the instructivist-based teaching environment. This paper first reviews the theories of Constructivism, and then demonstrates how to apply constructivist-based pedagogy in an instructivist-based environment by illustrating the constructivist-based activities: free writing, formative assessment, data-driven learning and sentence auction. This pedagogic proposal is not just suitable for the CEC in China, but also useful for the course where the four skills of the English language are practiced while constructivist-based teaching methods are not in use. Hopefully this proposal can contribute significantly to the undeniable need to educate students to be more informed, curious, and critical in English language teaching and learning.
Childhood and Adult Trauma Experiences of Incarcerated Persons and Their Relationship to Adult Behavioral Health Problems and Treatment
Nancy Wolff,Jing Shi
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/ijerph9051908
Abstract: Rates of childhood and adult trauma are high among incarcerated persons. In addition to criminality, childhood trauma is associated with the risk for emotional disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety) and co-morbid conditions such as alcohol and drug abuse and antisocial behaviors in adulthood. This paper develops rates of childhood and adult trauma and examines the impact of age-of-onset and type-specific trauma on emotional problems and behavior for a sample of incarcerated males (N~4,000). Prevalence estimates for types of trauma were constructed by age at time of trauma, race and types of behavioral health treatment received while incarcerated. HLM models were used to explore the association between childhood and adult trauma and depression, anxiety, substance use, interpersonal problems, and aggression problems (each model estimated separately and controlling for age, gender, race, time incarcerated, and index offense). Rates of physical, sexual, and emotional trauma were higher in childhood than adulthood and ranged from 44.7% (physical trauma in childhood) to 4.5% (sexual trauma in adulthood). Trauma exposure was found to be strongly associated with a wide range of behavioral problems and clinical symptoms. Given the sheer numbers of incarcerated men and the strength of these associations, targeted intervention is critical.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: With the understanding of the immune inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of dry eyes, and the limitations of widely used artificial tears and numerous pharmaceuticals and methods to promote tear secretion, clinicians pay more attention to the therapies that can promote tear secretion actively. Acupuncture treatment for dry eye may meet this requirement.OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment on dry eye and the effects on duration, and to examine the mechanisms of acupuncture in treating patients with dye eyes. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: The study was performed at Department of Ophthalmology, Shuguang Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from August 2010 to May 2011. Patients with the primary diagnosis of dry eye were enrolled. Sixty-five patients were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, and were given 3 weeks of acupuncture treatment or artificial tear therapy respectively.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the lactoferrin content of the tears before and after treatment. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment methods, the Schirmer Ⅰ test and break-up time were also measured.RESULTS: Compared with before treatment, the lactoferrin content in the tears of patients in the treatment group increased, break-up time was prolonged and the result of the Schirmer Ⅰ test showed improvement after 3 weeks of treatment. The indexes mentioned above did not change in the control group after treatment. There were no significant differences in tear lactoferrin and Schirmer Ⅰ test between one week after treatment and after 3-week treatment in the treatment group, but break-up time was significantly shortened. The result of Schirmer I test in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group one week after treatment.CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can increase tear lactoferrin level, extend tear film break-up time and promote tear secretion in patients with dry eye in a time-limited trial. With the end of treatment, the effect decreased.

Effect Analysis of Intermittent Release Measures in Heavy Fog Weather with an Improved CA Model
Jing Shi,Jinhua Tan
Discrete Dynamics in Nature and Society , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/812562
Abstract: Heavy fog may easily cause traffic accidents; thus freeway closures are frequently taken in order to ensure traffic safety in China, which not only seriously affect the travel of people, but also bring great economic losses. This paper studies the fog related risk of rear-end collisions and the intermittent release measures taken to reduce such risk; meanwhile, an improved cellular automaton model considering driving behaviors in heavy fog is proposed. The simulation results indicate that the risk indicator in fog is much higher than normal weather when cellular occupancy . After taking intermittent release measures, the magnitude of will drop from 10?4 to 10?5 under the same fog condition, which greatly enhances the safety. In addition, this paper concludes the appropriate vehicle number released for each time and the time interval between adjacent fleets and the maximum number of vehicles which can be released per hour. These results can be used as theoretical basis and reference for the traffic management departments to develop intermittent release measures. 1. Introduction Traffic accidents happen frequently in heavy fog weathers. According to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, there are about 600 people killed and 16, 300 injured annually in fog related road traffic accidents in the United States [1]. On the Shanghai-Nanjing freeway in China, the heavy fog related traffic accidents have accounted for a quarter of the total accidents, and the accident rate during heavy fog weather was 10 times over those in normal weather [2]. The freeway will be temporarily closed if the visibility drops down to 50 meters according to the Announcement of the Freeway Traffic Management in Low Visibility Weather Conditions issued by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China [3]. By the end of 2012, the freeway mileage in China amounted to 96, 200 kilometers. For traffic safety reasons, freeways are frequently closed in heavy fog, which not only seriously affects travelers’ mobility, but also brings a great deal of economic losses. Take Shanghai-Nanjing freeway as an example, the mileage is 274.35?km, and there were 57 closures due to heavy fog from 2006 to 2009. The direct economic losses caused by closures are over RMB67.81 million Yuan [2]. Therefore, the heavy fog has become the main adverse weather which threatens the normal operation of freeways. To reduce losses and take into account the traffic safety, some areas start to use intermittent release measures instead of road closures in heavy fog weather. Typical intermittent release
