Photosynthetic Light Utilization Efficiency, Water Relations and Leaf Growth of C3 and CAM Tropical Orchids under Natural Conditions  [PDF]

Abstract: Native orchid species of Singapore in their natural conditions experience stress from high irradiance, high temperatures and periods of extended low rainfall, which impact orchid plant physiology and lead to reduced growth and productivity. In this study, it was found that there was a reduction in photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) in 6 native orchid species under high light (HL) and Bulbophyllum membranaceum under low light (LL). There was chronic photoinhibition in these 6 orchid species over a period of 3 months after transplanting onto the tree trunks without watering and fertilization, especially in Coelogynes mayeriana and Bulbophyllum membranaceum under both HL and LL. This chronic photoinhibition caused by sustained period of water deficit in their natural conditions was later reversed by natural re-watering conditions from higher rainfall. These results indicate that water deficit has a greater impact on photosynthetic light utilization efficiency than excess light. The present study also showed that after natural rewatering, relative water content (RWC) of leaves and pseudobulbs generally increased. During the natural re-watering, total leaf area also gradually increased and reached maximum expansion after 7 weeks under both HL and LL, with some exceptions due to leaf abscission or decline in total leaf area, possibly a strategy for water conservation.

Abstract: This paper investigated the effects of root-zone (RZ) CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on root morphology and growth, nitrate (NO3-) uptake and assimilation of lettuce plants at different root-zone temperatures (RZT). Elevated RZ [CO2] stimulated root development, root and shoot growth compared to ambient RZ [CO2]. The greatest increase in root growth was observed in plants grown under elevated RZ [CO2] of 50,000 ppm. However, RZ [CO2] of 10,000 ppm was sufficient to achieve the maximal leaf area and shoot productivity. Lettuce plants exhibited faster shoot and root growth at 20°C-RZT than at ambient (A)-RZT. Physiological Performances of Temperate Vegetables with Response to Chronic and Acute Heat Stress  [PDF]

Abstract: In face of climate change catastrophes, understanding the thermal limits and optimal physiological thermal window food crop is of particular urgency. This research aims to evaluate: 1) how physiological performances of plant will change with increasing chronic and acute heat stress; 2) if the examined parameters form a hierarchy in terms of thermal tolerance; and 3) the optimal thermal window and critical temperatures of the examined plants with response to chronic and acute heat stress. Six temperate vegetables were subjected to chronic and acute heat stress and a suite of physiological parameters were evaluated. Dose responses were observed in shoot fresh weight, photosynthetic gas exchange, photosynthetic oxygen evolution, electron transfer rate, photo- and non-photochemical quenching with significant drop in performance as early as 28°C for selected species. Conversely, ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was not affected by heat stress until 46°C in chronic heat stress. Examining the temperature at which a measured parameter’s performance dropped by 50% compared to control (LT50), a distinct hierarchy of the indices was observed for Canasta, recombinant inbred line 141, Lactuca serriola and Lactuca sativa (L. Abstract: With the sharp changes in external environment, sustainable competitive advantage is importance resource that the enterprises need to get in the fierce market game. The 90’s are becoming the backbone of enterprises, and under the background of human resources, driving the development of the enterprise innovation ability by cultivating highly professional knowledge staff is the important measure of enterprise to obtain sustainable competitive advantage. This study will explore the relationship between employees’ career growth and work engagement, in order to provide effective advice for enterprise to cultivate staffs with high job engagement. Based on social exchange theory, empirical results indicate that career growth has significant positive impact on employees’ job engagement through a mediating role of normative commitment. Meanwhile, the two assumptions about the moderating role of organizational justice are not supported, which are including that organizational justice plays a moderating role between career growth and job engagement, and organizational justice adjusts the mediating role of normative commitment between career growth and job engagement. Empirical results indicate that organizational justice plays a moderating role between normative commitment and job engagement. The research results show that enterprises can satisfy employees’ career growth needs, such as economic, power, ability, social and emotional needs, thus achieving the goal of improving employee’s organization normative commitment level, and eventually achieving the goal of employees work commitment.

Abstract: Analysis is done on the inter-carrier interference (ICI) that caused by multi-carrier communication system frequency offset. The application model of DFT/IDFT in ADSL access network is analyzed further; the hardware detection and software analysis scheme of the system are proposed for the accessing network. Experiments have proved that monitoring system can filter the network data flow and carry on statistical and analysis, achieving real-time monitoring.

Abstract: When Newton became the President of the Royal Society, he proposed corpuscle concept (wave-particle duality) to destroy the fruitions of Hooke and Huygens, because Newton mistook Hooke and Huygens as his enemies. Thereafter, this erroneous concept governed the scientific world for more than one hundred years. This paper will reveal the mystery: why corpuscle concept could govern the scientific world for one hundred years after Newton’s death. In the beginning of last century, photon, a palingenesis of Newton’s corpuscle, was proposed by Einstein again, as a sudden whim, because Planck strongly opposed this wrong concept, since 1907, Einstein strongly doubted this concept. Finally, Einstein disappointedly said: “The quanta really are a hopeless mess.” This paper will reveal the mystery: why photon concept can govern the scientific world until now, and give the evidences for the actual nature of light.

Abstract: After the concept of "platinum 10 minutes" in emergency rescue of a seriously injured was proposed, both narrow and broad concepts concerning the proposal were gradually formed. In a relatively short time, the concept has received widespread concern, both from professional circle and society at large. However, "platinum 10 minutes" in emergency salvage is handicapped by two "blind" areas, namely, a period of lacking first aid and a period of shortage of professional medical treatment. It should be emphasized that timely treatment is the motive and goal of a successful salvage of a seriously injured individual. Therefore, in a sense a successful salvage of a seriously injured depends on three factors, namely, time, space, and first aider, in order to achieve such a goal. Among these three factors the time lag before a successful first aid should be considered to be the most important factor. Therefore, the first witness, though he or she may not be a health professional, is the core individual to carry out first aid in order to save the life of the victim. In this sense, it should be recognized that "buddy" aid, or first aid performed by a layman is the beginning and foundation of a successful salvage, as it is evident that it could not be performed by a professional who is not readily available. First aid at the scenario is not only life saving, but it lays the foundation for a successful salvage of the victim. In many instances, it might be more valuable than professional treatment. Therefore, first aid effort at the site of accident should not be neglected, on the other hand, it should be re-emphasized. It not only lays a good foundation for final professional treatment, it should be considered as the important link of a successful salvage of a seriously wounded person. Therefore, a high quality first aid given by a laymen within a few minutes after injury, not only it is life-saving, but also it should be regarded as an independent link in the course of life saving of a seriously injured. Though it is such an important and most effective step in "platinum 10 minutes", yet it is at present the weakest link. Therefore, it behoves us not only to re-emphasize it, but also recommend self aid and aid by a bystander as a nation-wide strategy in the treatment of seriously injured individuals.
