Effects of Coptis extract combined with chemotherapeutic agents on ROS production, multidrug resistance, and cell growth in A549 human lung cancer cells

Abstract: A549 cells were treated with different doses of COP and BER, combined with 5-FU, CPT, and TAX. Cell viability was measured by an XTT (2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4- nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2 H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide) assay. Intracellular ROS levels were determined by measuring the oxidative conversion of cell permeable 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein diacetate to fluorescent dichlorofluorescein. MDR of A549 cells was assessed by rhodamine 123 retention assay.Both COP and BER significantly inhibited A549 cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. Combinations of COP or BER with chemotherapeutic agents (5-FU, CPT, and TAX) exhibited a stronger inhibitory effect on A549 cell growth. In addition, COP and BER increased ROS production and reduced MDR in A549 cells.As potential adjuvants to chemotherapy for non–small cell lung cancer, COP and BER increase ROS production, reduce MDR, and enhance the inhibitory effects of chemotherapeutic agents on A549 cell growth.The herb Coptis (COP) is used to treat “damp heat” syndrome in Chinese medicine [1]. Its major constituent is berberine (BER), an isoquinoline alkaloid [2]. The anticancer effects of COP and BER on both hematological and nonhematological cancers have been well documented [3]. Since 2000, experimental studies have confirmed the cytotoxicity of BER in various cancer cell lines, including YES (esophageal carcinoma) [4], HK1 (nasopharyngeal carcinoma) [5], HeLa (cervical carcinoma) [6], HepG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) [7]. Our previous studies [9,10] have also shown that COP inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells.Non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for approximately 85% of lung cancers, and only responds to 15%–25% single agents and 25%–40% combined chemotherapy [11]. NSCLC is typically resistant to apoptosis induced by standard chemotherapy, which causes excessive levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to impaired intracellular ionic homeostasis by damaging cellular macromolecules and inducing apoptosis [12].
Hydroacoustic observation of fish spatial patterns and behavior in the ship lock and adjacent areas of Gezhouba Dam, Yangtze River

Abstract: The split-beam echo sounders were used in the No. 1 ship lock and the adjacent areas of the Gezhouba Dam Reach separately, to observe fish spatial distribution and the behavior of local fish about the Gezhouba Dam, and figure out whether the ship lock could served as a channel for fish migration in a way. The resulted showed that there were significance difference in both fish size (converted from the TS of individual fish) and abundance in the five marked sub-areas. Beyond that, there was an analogical fish distribution format in the analogical environmental condition. It might well be that fish species distributed in this area with the regioselectivity, which might resulted in the spatial differentiation. The horizontal fixed-location detection of the No. 1 ship lock revealed that, there were many ups and downs in the fish density with significant difference during a diurnal period, which might be resulted by the law of diel vertical distribution. There were all together 38 fishes moving up- or downstream the ship lock were detected during the period of ship-lock opening. In spite of the fact that, we cannot regard that the ship lock can served as the channel for fish migration. Because the evidence originated from the fish spatial differentiation and behavior in preference to that, it was the general behavior of that the fish swam backwards and forwards across the ship lock.
Simulation and Experimental Study on the Atomization Character of the Pressure-Swirl Nozzle  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper the atomization character of the pressure-swirl injector was measured by using the Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) in the section of 150 mm below the outlet of the orifice. The orifice diameter of the pressure-swirl injector is 0.62 mm. The atomization character includes the spray angle, the water flow rate, the Sauter mean diameter (SMD), the velocity of the particles and their distribution in the radial and the axial directions under the pressure from 1 MPa to 4.5 MPa. After that the atomization character of the pressure-swirl injector was simulated in the DPM panel. The same atomization character of the injector was calculated and compared with the experimental data. The simulation was corrected by using the experimental data which can make it accurately and the model can be used to predict and calculate the atomization character of different injectors.

Abstract: The 3-partitioning problem is to decide whether a given multiset of nonnegative integers can be partitioned into triples that all have the same sum. It is considerably used to prove the strong NP-hardness of many scheduling problems. In this paper, we consider four optimization versions of the 3-partitioning problem, and then present four polynomial time approximation schemes for these problems.

As one of the most important industries, development of automobile will promote auto-maintain and repair trade in China. Xi’an, a center city in north western, carries out frequently commerce with other areas, progresses rapidly transportation and travel, and increases gradually quantity of various import and homemade vehicles. In Xi’an city, auto-workshops mainly repair small cars at present. There are no special dealers for passenger car. Therefore in Xi’an local, creating some standard dealers that can fix advanced passenger cars and selling auto-parts will have a wide prospect.

Abstract: Dried leaves of Marchantia convoluta are largely used to protect livers,and to treat tumefaction of skins in China. Flavonoids from Marchantia Convoluta (MCF) was one of the mostpotentially effective anti-inflammatory. MCF was studied here for its ability to inhibit the proliferation of 2,2,15 cells(clone cells derived from HepG2 cells that were transected with a plasmid containing HBV, DNA). All concentrations(5,10,20 and 40 :g/ml) of MCF inhibit hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg) and hepatitis B E antigen (HbeAg) in thecultured medium released from 2.2.15 cells. Analysis of morphological changes of MCF-treated phase- contrastmicroscope revealed a possible model of action for MCF to inhibit Proliferation of 2.2.15 cells by inducing apoptosis.
Multiscale Analysis of Biological Data by Scale-Dependent Lyapunov Exponent

Abstract: Physiological signals often are highly non-stationary (i.e., mean and variance change with time) and multiscaled (i.e., dependent on the spatial or temporal interval lengths). They may exhibit different behaviors, such as non-linearity, sensitive dependence on small disturbances, long memory, and extreme variations. Such data have been accumulating in all areas of health sciences and rapid analysis can serve quality testing, physician assessment, and patient diagnosis. To support patient care, it is very desirable to characterize the different signal behaviors on a wide range of scales simultaneously. The Scale-Dependent Lyapunov Exponent (SDLE) is capable of such a fundamental task. In particular, SDLE can readily characterize all known types of signal data, including deterministic chaos, noisy chaos, random 1/fα processes, stochastic limit cycles, among others. SDLE also has some unique capabilities that are not shared by other methods, such as detecting fractal structures from non-stationary data and detecting intermittent chaos. In this article, we describe SDLE in such a way that it can be readily understood and implemented by non-mathematically oriented researchers, develop a SDLE-based consistent, unifying theory for the multiscale analysis, and demonstrate the power of SDLE on analysis of heart-rate variability (HRV) data to detect congestive heart failure and analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) data to detect seizures.

Abstract: This paper proves the existence of homeomorphic (diffeomorphic) complex 6-dimensional (7-dim) complete intersections that belong to components of the moduli space of different dimensions. These results are given as a supplement to earlier result on 5-dimensional complete intersections.

Abstract: The purpose of this note is to give a description of the stable homotopy group of some $2$-stage Postnikov systems for a range of dimensions. The considered $2$-stage Postnikov systems has the (weak) homotopy type of a generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane space, then their stable homotopy groups can be calculated by the stable homotopy groups of generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane spaces.
