Spider mites associated to soybean in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: the objective of this work was to study the occurrence and geographic distribution of phytophagous mites associated to soybean in rio grande do sul, brazil. samplings were performed from january to may 2005 on genetically modified soybean (glyphosate-tolerant) crops, in 27 municipalities of six regions - alto vale do uruguai, campanha, depress?o central, planalto médio, miss?es and serra do sudeste. five phytophagous mite species belonging to the family tetranychidae - mononychellus planki, tetranychus desertorum, t. gigas, t. ludeni and t. urticae - occurred in 21, 12, 5, 3 and 14 municipalities, respectively. a map of rio grande do sul with the geographic distribution of each species is presented, as well as an illustrated dichotomous key to help the identification of the spider mites found.

Abstract: the use of either high or low temperatures and different co2 and o2 concentrations on the storage atmosphere are altematives for fruit desinfestation and others agricultural goods and insect control on grains during storage. these nonchemical methods avoid the use of insecticides, without leaving toxic residues on the storage products. this review evaluate the efficiency of these different nonchemical methods of the control of insects on fruits, vegetables and grains.

Abstract: the goal of this study was to evaluate the population dynamics of citrus root weevils. samples of the larval, pupa and adult phases were taken every 15 days in four citrus farms in itapetininga, state of s?o paulo, brazil, between march, 2000 and february, 2002. the emergence of adults was evaluated in cages under plant canopy and the adult population at plant canopy with a beating cloth; larvae and the pupae in ditches opened in the soil, under plant crowns. based on the population dynamics, the insects are univoltine. most adults emerged from october to april, with peaks at the beginning of the period. species parapantomorus fluctuosus (boheman), naupactus cervinus boheman and naupactus versatilis hustache were more frequent in itapetininga, sp, although the peaks and times were different. larvae occurred almost during the whole year, with population peaks from june to january. the number of curculionids was lower in the second year of the study for all insect phases, probably due to drought. adults and larvae sampled, with beating cloths and in cages, could be used to detect, quantify and predict the occurrence of citrus root weevils.

Abstract: the aim of this work was to study some characteristics of oviposition of citrus root weevils. the insects and vegetal substrats (fruits, leaves, branches and debris) were colected in citrus groves, in itapetininga, sp, brazil, and conducted to laboratório de biologia de insetos esalq/usp, in piracicaba-sp, brazil. the species naupactus cervinus boheman, naupactus versatilis hustache, naupactus tarsalis boheman, parapantomorus fluctuosus (boheman) and teratopactus nodicollis (boheman) were reared, and the oviposition was observed. six assays were conducted, all in plastic boxes (10.0 x 20.0 x 30.0cm), at a 25 ± 1oc, 60 ± 10% ru. the preference was evaluated by leaves, fruits and vax paper, with free choice assay a and without chance assay b; preference for three fruit color (green, yellow-green and yellow), at assay c; three distances from husk to chalice (adhered, intermediate (=1,5mm) and far (=1,5mm) assay d, and by leaf, fruit and wet soil and vegetal debris assay d. the species showed differences in oviposition characteristics. they oviposit in fruits with no preference by color and in vax paper. the latter is an alternative for eggs collect at laboratory. some species oviposit in the soil or in debris at soil surface.

Abstract: this paper is based on experiments conducted during 91/92 and 92/93 cropping seasons. the objetive was to evaluate the sample size necessary to estimate yield components of beans. sample size was calculated considering both finite and infinite populations. results indicated that the number of required sampling units inpractice is only praticable for a precision equal or above 10% of the mean for number of seeds per pod and weight of 100 seeds and, equal or above 20% of the mean for number of pods per plant and seed weight per plant.

Abstract: an experiment was carried out at jaguari, rs - brazil, during 1995, in order to avaluate lhe efficiency of three pheromone traps were in capturing (ornato leaf-miner scrobipalpuloides absoluta. the experiment was perfomed inside on plastic greenhouse cropped with tomato. the "santa maria " pattern was 25% more eff?cient that "cica-r" pattern although they wen not significantty different. the "embrapa"'pattern was less attractiveness.

Abstract: this work research was aimed at studing some characteristics of the adult phase of two species of citrus root weevils. naupactus cervinus boheman, naupactus versatilis hustache were collected from citrus in itapetininga, sp, and taken to the insect biology laboratory of esalq/usp, in piracicaba, sp. longevity, feeding time, pre-oviposition period, oviposition, number of egg-laying and eggs, and the consumption of the citrus leaf during the adult phase were evaluated. n. versatilis is potentially more dangerous to citrus, because it lays a larger number of eggs (214.6 x 120.9 eggs), has a higher longevity (30.9 x 25.2 days) and consumes a larger leaf area (31.0 x 15.0cm2).

Abstract: this experiment was carried out aiming to evaluate the effect of different co2 and 02 concentrations on the contral of sitophilus zeamais. the experimental design was a split-plot in time, with the main plot distribucted in a completly randomized design, with four replications. the plot was consisted of a 5-liter glass chamber, in which 0.15 kg of desinfected maize with 200 unsexed adults insects. eight gas concentrations were avaluated: 0.03% of co2 and 21% of o2 (control), 10% of co2 and 16% of o2, 15% of co2 and 16% of o2, 20% of co2 and 16% of o2, 0% of co2 and 5% of o2, 0% of co2 and 1% of o2, 15% of co2 and 5% of o2 and 12% of co2 and 8% of o2. results demonstrated that 20% of co2 controlled the insects in five days. treatment with 15% of co2 and 5% of 02 controlled 100% of insects in 10 days and 0% of co2 and 1% of o2 controlled in 15 days.

Abstract: sampling is a key component in the integrated pest management. in this studit was compared the colleting capacity of two sampling methods for caterpillar (anticarsia gemmatalis hueb., 1818) and stink bug (piezodorus guildinii westw., 1837). an experiment was carried out in soybean sown in three spacing (0.30, 0.40 and 0.50m). the experiment design was a completely randomized design with ten repetitions (sampling) in a 2x3 factorial. the population of velvetbean caterpillar and stink bug was evaluated in two sampling methods (beating cloth and vertical beat sheet) and three row spacing, at v8 and r6 stages, for caterpillar and stink bug, respectively. results showed greater efficiency of the vertical beat sheet compared with beating cloth in colleting caterpillar. in the smaller spacing, the vertical beating cloth did not clarify its greater capacity of colleting bugs, as observed for caterpillars. these results show that more studies are necessary to evaluate sampling methods of insects in soybean using different plant spacing.
