The effect of H. pylori eradication on meal-associated changes in plasma ghrelin and leptin

Abstract: Veterans referred for upper GI endoscopy were evaluated at baseline and ≥8 weeks after endoscopy, and H. pylori status and body weight were ascertained. During the first visit in all subjects, and during subsequent visits in the initially H. pylori-positive subjects and controls, blood was collected after an overnight fast and 1 h after a standard high protein meal, and levels of eight hormones determined.Of 92 enrolled subjects, 38 were H. pylori-negative, 44 H. pylori-positive, and 10 were indeterminate. Among 23 H. pylori-positive subjects who completed evaluation after treatment, 21 were eradicated, and 2 failed eradication. After a median of seven months following eradication, six hormones related to energy homeostasis showed no significant differences, but post-prandial acylated ghrelin levels were nearly six-fold higher than pre-eradication (p = 0.005), and median integrated leptin levels also increased (20%) significantly (p < 0.001). BMI significantly increased (5 ± 2%; p = 0.008) over 18 months in the initially H. pylori-positive individuals, but was not significantly changed in those who were H. pylori-negative or indeterminant at baseline.Circulating meal-associated leptin and ghrelin levels and BMI changed significantly after H. pylori eradication, providing direct evidence that H. pylori colonization is involved in ghrelin and leptin regulation, with consequent effects on body morphometry.The healthful regulation of energy homeostasis in humans, depends on centrally-acting hormones such as ghrelin and leptin [1,2]. Abstract: Background: To ensure precision and accuracy during interventional radiologic (IR) procedures, navigation systems are utilized. There are four main categories of guidance systems that can be used to assist in IR procedures: optical system, electromagnetic (EM) tracking, Cone Bean Computer Tomography (CBCT) and Magnetic Navigation system. Objective: The purpose of this report is to examine some current medical literature to present an impression as to the state of navigation system use in interventional radiology. Methods: Three health databases were selected: Pubmed, Embase and OVID Medline, with the search terms “Interventional Radiology” and “Navigation System” being used. All included studies were presented in English. Studies were excluded if they did not pertain to navigation systems in interventional radiology, were in a language other than English, presented an abstract only or solely discussed interventional cardiology. Results: General themes emerged within the literature for the advantages of navigation system use including benefits to interventional radiologic procedures, increased patient accuracy and reduced procedure time and the potential for reduction in costs. Increased radiation exposure, problems accounting for respiratory motion and sterility remain issues for navigation system use. Conclusion: With potential to better standardize treatment using navigation systems, patients can have access to up-to-date technology for treatment. To ensure the highest standard of care, navigation systems should be used by interventional radiologists only. As indications and clinical efficacy are frequently being defined for navigation system use in interventional radiology, continual review of the published literature and large clinical trials for each system should be pursued.
English Orature, English Literature: the Case of Charms

Abstract: Traditional charms are a part of English orature; charms in literature are a part of English literature. This simple distinction does not, however, tell the whole story: charms, as is well known, are sometimes written down, rather than verbalized, in order to function as talismans; charms, no matter how traditionary, can feature motifs more commonly found in literature; and the transmission of charms may involve a written as well as an oral dimension (the most obvious example of this being the existence of spellbooks). On the other hand, charms in literature are not always purely literary: they may have a relationship with traditional verbal charms. At the very least, charms presumably existed in real life before they appeared in literature. This paper, which is not a full survey of charms in English literature, will examine some occurrences of supposed charms in literary texts and compare and contrast these items with the generic characteristics of the genuine article.

Abstract: In addressing the working relationships among the three institutions responsible for European and transatlantic relations in the field of security, it is necessary to examine why they were relatively separate until the beginning of this present decade, why they hadinitially so much difficulty in developing affective patterns of cooperation, why this is now improving, and what the prospects are for their future cooperation into the 21st century. It must be noted from the onset that some of the problems of developing effective working relationships arise from the different, albeit overlapping memberships of the European Union and NATO; and while all the full members of WEU are members of both NATO and EU, the existence of a third player cannot be said to have always been helpful.
Implied volatility explosions: European calls and implied volatilities close to expiry in exponential Lévy models

Abstract: We examine the small expiry behaviour of European call options in stock price models of exponential L\'evy type. In most cases of interest, we are able to identify the exact small expiry asymptotics. In "complete generality" we are able to show that the time value of the call option has O(\tau) decay as \tau (time to expiry) goes to zero. Using our results on the behaviour of call options close to expiry we show that implied volatility explodes as $\tau\to0^+$ in "most" exponential L\'evy models. Attention is restricted to calls and implied volatilities that are not at-the-money.
The Dual PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor NVP-BEZ235 Induces Tumor Regression in a Genetically Engineered Mouse Model of PIK3CA Wild-Type Colorectal Cancer

Abstract: Purpose To examine the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of the dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor NVP-BEZ235 in treatment of PIK3CA wild-type colorectal cancer (CRC). Experimental Design PIK3CA mutant and wild-type human CRC cell lines were treated in vitro with NVP-BEZ235, and the resulting effects on proliferation, apoptosis, and signaling were assessed. Colonic tumors from a genetically engineered mouse (GEM) model for sporadic wild-type PIK3CA CRC were treated in vivo with NVP-BEZ235. The resulting effects on macroscopic tumor growth/regression, proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and signaling were examined. Results In vitro treatment of CRC cell lines with NVP-BEZ235 resulted in transient PI3K blockade, sustained decreases in mTORC1/mTORC2 signaling, and a corresponding decrease in cell viability (median IC50 = 9.0–14.3 nM). Similar effects were seen in paired isogenic CRC cell lines that differed only in the presence or absence of an activating PIK3CA mutant allele. In vivo treatment of colonic tumor-bearing mice with NVP-BEZ235 resulted in transient PI3K inhibition and sustained blockade of mTORC1/mTORC2 signaling. Longitudinal tumor surveillance by optical colonoscopy demonstrated a 97% increase in tumor size in control mice (p = 0.01) vs. a 43% decrease (p = 0.008) in treated mice. Ex vivo analysis of the NVP-BEZ235-treated tumors demonstrated a 56% decrease in proliferation (p = 0.003), no effects on apoptosis, and a 75% reduction in angiogenesis (p = 0.013). Conclusions These studies provide the preclinical rationale for studies examining the efficacy of the dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor NVP-BEZ235 in treatment of PIK3CA wild-type CRC.

Abstract: Water scarcity is a serious problem throughout the world for both urban & rural community. Urban centers in India are facing an ironical situation of water scarcity today. This paper includes an Analytical solution, Numerical modeling, Empirical approaches, In-situ test results to predict recharge (rate) mound of the ground-water and capacity of recharge well which is essential for the proper management of suitable artificial ground-water recharge systems to maintain water balance and stop salt water intrusion. Authors have derived analytical equation for predicting growth as well as decline of the ground-water mound depending on the intensity of recharge rate qr with different value of permeability k, depth of pervious strata H and diameter of well d, also studying the effects of variation in the geotechnical parameters on water-table fluctuations. In this paper to study the impact of numerical modeling using quadratic equation for unconfined aquifer base on rainfall intensity P and a change in saturated thickness H with variation in piezometric level. Empirical approaches are for evaluation of correct value of k of an undercharged unconfined aquifer with drawdown s0, influence zone L, recharge rate qr. In-situ test results give actual correlation between value of recharging rate of well and permeability on field. Authors have verified recharging rate of installed well from all approaches. A result obtained from the various field case studies gives the validation of the derived equation. Scientific quality measures of aquifer water are also recorded.
