Abstract: purpose: to evaluate and compare neutrophils sequestration in the renal cortex of rats, result of total hepatic ischemia and reperfusion after controlled hemorrhagic shock, with use of different electrolytic solutions. methods: used 18 rats wistar, males, adult, divided into three groups as the solution used to reanimation: group pss: physiologic saline solution; group hss: hypertonic saline hypertonic (7,5%) followed by lactated ringer's solution; group lrs: lactated ringer's solution. all the animals were submitted to the bleeding controlled until mean arterial pressure (map) 40 mmhg, for 20 minutes. performed volemic replacement until pam=80 mmhg with the solution according the studied group, followed by laparotomy and pringle's maneuver for 15 minutes. the animals were accompanied until for two hours. to statistical comparisons between mean of neutrophils sequestration, in interstitium of the renal cortex, were made the tests one-way anova and covariance analysis, adjusting itself for time of supervened. the hemodynamic parameters evaluated were: map, heat rate, cardiac index, vascular resistance system index. the analyzed metabolic variables were: ph, bicarbonate, base deficit and lactato, besides electrolytes. results: the mean values of supervened, in minutes, for group were: group pss 79,0±12,0; group lrs 97,0±11,0; group hss 67,0±10. the mean values of neutrophils/field in the renal cortex were: group pss 0,55±0,68; group lrs 1,68±0,53; group hss 1,33±0,43. when adjusted for time of supervened: group pss 0,55; group lrs 1,62; group hss 1,39. there was statistically significant difference in neutrophils sequestration, between group pss regarding the others groups, using itself or not the adjustment by time of supervened (p=0,016 and p=0,0128). conclusion: both critical situations in this model, controlled hemorrhagic shock followed by pringle's maneuver, promoted neutrophils sequestration in the interstitium renal of rat, and the physiologic saline solution
The tritrophic system hyptis suaveolens (Lamiaceae) - agromyzid leafminers (Diptera: Agromyzidae) - parasitoids (Hymenoptera): effects of herbivore density, host plant patch size, and habitat complexity on parasitism rate
Queiroz, Jarbas Marcal de;Garcia, Maria Alice;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132009000300008
Abstract: in this study a tritrophic system was evaluated to measure the contributions of the insect host density and its host plant concentration in simple and diversified habitat on the rate of parasitism. the system was composed of the plant hyptis suaveolens, two species of agromyzid leafminers, and three morphospecies of parasitoids. the parasitism rate, patch size, and habitat complexity were found to be interdependent. if only the habitat complexity or patch size was take into account the differences in parasitism rate are not significant, although habitat diversity seemed to contribute more than the host plant concentration to increase the parasitism rate. the leaves or plants with different number of mines were equally attacked by the parasitoids. the results were representative of what happened to the leafminers at different host plant densities under the homogeneous and heterogeneous habitat condition. this work could help to reinforce the idea of the importance of the plant diversity for enhancing the biological control of the pests by the parasitoids in the managed ecosystems.

Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-43662002000200009
Abstract: intensive agriculture always aims at increased productivity, with limited or no attention dedicated to possible impacts on the environment. therefore, the understanding of processes of solute transport in the soil contributes to reduction of leaching to the deep layers. in this connection, the present study had the objective of developing and evaluating a computational model for solute displacement simulation in the soil based on numerical solutions of differential equations describing this displacement. from the results obtained, the model presented a good agreement of nitrate concentrations as well as soil moisture profile when compared with the results obtained on a vertical column of non-saturated soil under laboratory conditions.

Abstract: this paper describes and analyses how brazilian companies, whose quality systems are certificated according to international standards, are using quality costs as a management tool. it also analyses the main characteristics of quality cost systems and their implementation. research was carried out in 919 companies whose quality systems are certificated in accordance with iso 9001, 9002 or 9003 standards. questionnaires were mailed to the quality managers of these companies. in total, 300 companies responded to the questionnaire, representing a 33 percent response rate, of which 39% had implemented or were implementing a quality cost system. the main observed difficulties were the lack of understanding of the tool and the view that the accounting information system was inadequate.
Preliminary results of an instrument for measuring the optical aberrations of the human eye

Abstract: the human eye, as our biological vision instrument, contains intrinsic optical defects, referred to as optical aberrations or ametropia. the immediate consequence of such aberrations is poor quality of images formed at the retina. with the advent of more precise pulsed lasers for eye surgery, the development of instrumentation to determine precisely the higher order aberrations of the eye became a crucial chalange. current instruments available commercially (refractometers) measure only the lower optical aberrations of the eye, i. e., myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. in the present work we have developed a high resolution refractometer based on the hartmann-shack (hs) wave-front sensor. the hs sensor was originally developed for aberration measurements in general optical systems, and is of wide-spread usage in adaptive optics applications such as astronomical telescopes. preliminary results for a mechanical eye are presented here and the rmse in dioptric power (d) and cylinder axis (in degrees) were as follows: 0.04d for sphere and cylinder and 40 for axis. it is known that refractometers have typical errors of 0.12d diopters for sphere and cylinder and 50 for axis. these preliminary results indicate that the hs sensor may be applied successfully on in vivo eyes and that, in the near future, this technology may be available in most eye hospitals and clinics throughout the world, therefore bringing benefits to the general population.

Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442003000400004
Abstract: background: elevated levels of triglycerdes in the serum are associated with patologicals conditions that they accelerate to aterosclerose, beyond they evidences will exist of that to hypertrigliceridemia is an independent factor of risk for illnesses coronarias therefore i contributed for the cardiopatias by an effect aterogênico straight of the lipoproteínas rich in triglicerídeos. very big variations in the dosage of the colesterol and triglicérides they limit sweats clinical utilization. those variations can be analytic, when related to metodologia and procedures utilized by the laboratories, and pré analytic, when related to factors intrínsecos of the individual. objectives: using the same approach laboratorial, analyzed itself possible alterations in the levels lipídicos of the patients in order to question to true validade of that the fast of 12 previous hours to the pun??o be sufficient for that can be carried out trustworthy dosages with the profile of the patient. methods: they were analyzed serum of 29 patients, reaped in two distinct days; in the monday and in the thursday from the same week. results: we be able to observe variations on the occasion of the dosage of triglicerídeos in peculiar days from the week, being that the levels of such parameter in the monday are presented more elevated that in the thursday, even that the sick one i have done a rigorous fast of 12 hours before of both you collect them. the colesterol gross, the hdl, the ldl and the vldl they were not shown with significant statistical variation. discussion: being like this, the fast recommended of 12 hours is not sufficient to relate the real profile lipídico of the patient.
