Different expression of CD180, CD284 and CD14 receptors on the CD19+ subpopulation of normal and B-CLL lymphocytes.

Abstract: Numerous experimental data indicate that B-CLL development and progression are influenced by antigenic pressure. It can not be excluded that these antigens may originate from bacteria and viruses. Toll like receptors (TLRs) interact with pathogen associated molecular patterns as part of innate immunity. TLRs are currently used to target different subclasses of B-cell leukemia, and TLR agonists are being evaluated in clinical trials. It is little known regarding the repertoire and function of TLR in B-CLL. The aim of the study was to assess the CD180, CD284 and mCD14 levels in CD19+ subpopulation of B-CLL peripheral blood lymphocytes and compare them with respective levels in the normal B-cells of adult volunteers, before and after LPS stimulation. We investigated the percentage of the CD19+CD180+, CD19+CD284+, CD19+CD14+ cells and the mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of CD180, CD284 and CD14 antigens among CD19+ B-CLL as well as in the normal B cells for comparison. MFI analysis revealed that CD180, CD284 and CD14 expression was higher on normal B cells then on CD19+ B-CLL (MFI CD180: 99.16 vs. 25.3, MFI CD284: 7.37 vs. 5.79 and MFI CD14 25.07 vs. 8.32). After 24-hour LPS activation of B-cells, CD180 MFI appeared to decrease, in both healthy and B-CLL patients. CD284 MFI in healthy controls decreased after LPS stimulation while slight increase of MFI was observed in leukemic cells. CD14 MFI in leukemic cells was moderately higher after LPS in comparison to CD14 MFI without LPS stimulation, whereas CD14 MFI in normal CD19+ cells after LPS stimulation decreased over three times. Variations observed in expression of both normal and leukemic receptors may be due to their different sensitivity to antigenic stimulation.

Abstract: Lead and cadmium levels were determined in the meat tissues of roach, bream, and carp netted in a lake and in fish ponds threatened by a pesticide tomb and in control basins in northeastern Poland. Concentrations in roach ranged from 20 to 124 μg kg-1 of Pb and from 1 to 19 μg kg-1 of Cd. In bream they were from 4 to 280 μg kg-1 of Pb and 2 to 28 μg kg-1 of Cd, while in carp they were from 9 to 82 μg kg-1 of Pb and 2 to 260 μg kg-1 of Cd. The metal concentrations were low; no result exceeded admissible residue levels set forth by Polish law, and no evident contamination of fish by leakage from the pesticide tomb was detected.

Abstract: In this paper, we prove two formulas involving Mertens and Chebyshev functions. The first formula was done by Mertens himself without a proof. The second formula is a new one. Using these formulas, we estimate the Mertens function in such manner that we obtain a sufficient condition to approve the Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract: The work presents the possibility of substitution of expensive, wear resistant Co-WC powders, that have been traditionally used in the production of sintered diamond tools, with cheap iron-base counterparts manufactured by ball milling. It has been shown that ball-milled Fe-Ni-Cu-Sn-C powders can be consolidated to a virtually pore-free condition by hot pressing at 900 ℃. The as-consolidated material has nanocrystalline structure and is characterised by a combination of high hardness, mechanical strength and excellent resistance to abrasion. Its properties can be widely modified by changing the milling conditions.

Recent experiments with suspended graphene have indicated the crucial role of carrier mobility in the competition between Laughlin collective state and insulating state, probably of Wigner-crystal-type. Moreover, the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in graphene has been observed at a low carrier density where the interaction is reduced as a result of particles dilution. This suggests that the interaction may not be a sole factor in the triggering of FQHE as it was expected basing on the standard formulation of the composite fermion model. Here, the topological arguments are presented to explain the observed features of the FQHE in graphene and the triggering role of carrier mobility in formation of the Laughlin state.

The barley EST DNA Replication and Repair Database (bEST-DRRD) as a tool for the identification of the genes involved in DNA replication and repair

Abstract: These studies, which were conducted mainly using bioinformatics tools, enabled the list of genes that participate in various pathways of DNA repair in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh to be outlined; however, information regarding these mechanisms in crop plants is still very limited. A similar, functional approach is particularly difficult for a species whose complete genomic sequences are still unavailable. One of the solutions is to apply ESTs (Expressed Sequence Tags) as the basis for gene identification. For the construction of the barley EST DNA Replication and Repair Database (bEST-DRRD), presented here, the Arabidopsis nucleotide and protein sequences involved in DNA replication and repair were used to browse for and retrieve the deposited sequences, derived from four barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) sequence databases, including the “Barley Genome version 0.05” database (encompassing ca. 90% of barley coding sequences) and from two databases covering the complete genomes of two monocot models: Oryza sativa L. and Brachypodium distachyon L. in order to identify homologous genes. Sequences of the categorised Arabidopsis queries are used for browsing the repositories, which are located on the ViroBLAST platform. The bEST-DRRD is currently used in our project during the identification and validation of the barley genes involved in DNA repair.The presented database provides information about the Arabidopsis genes involved in DNA replication and repair, their expression patterns and models of protein interactions. It was designed and established to provide an open-access tool for the identification of monocot homologs of known Arabidopsis genes that are responsible for DNA-related processes.
