Agronomic and economic viability of intercropping onion and lettuce

Abstract: the study aimed to evaluate the agronomic and economic performance of intercropping onion and lettuce on four plant densities of each species. the experiment was set up in completely randomized blocks, with four replications and treatments arranged in a 4 x 4 factorial. treatments resulted from a combination of four (100, 80, 60, and 40% of recommended plant densities in monoculture) plant densities for both lettuce and onion. intercropping did not affect the agronomic performance of onion or lettuce. higher plant densities (100% for both vegetables) resulted in higher lettuce and onion yields. the best economic results were observed using (a) onion at 80% of plant density combined with lettuce at 40 and 100% and (b) onion at 100% and lettuce at all densities (40 to 100%).

Abstract: the northern region of minas gerais is marked by summers of high light intensity, which prevents the cultivation of some vegetables in this season. to evaluate the agronomic performance and the quality of the tomato cultivation under different shading levels, we conducted in 11/2009 at 02/2010 an experiment in the company qualihort seeds ltd located in the municipality of nova porterinha, minas gerais. the experiment was arranged in randomized blocks in a 2 x 4 factorial design (two hybrids - dominator and giovanna - and four shading levels: 0%, 18%, 30% and 50%) with four replications. the hybrid dominador was superior to the giovanna in plant height, fruit number and fruit number per plant. the environments with 50 and 30% shading promoted higher plants. marketable yield was highest at 50% shading. the different levels of shading did not significantly alter the traits ph, total soluble solids (tss), titratable acidity (ta) and soluble solids / acidity (rsa). it was observed a higher average ph in fruits of dominador, and higher mean sst in fruits of giovanna. shading of 50% promoted the greater interception of radiation and promoted a higher production, productivity and leaf area index, as well as higher ambient temperature, whereas the relative humidity was higher in the treatment with 30% shading.

Abstract: The onion (Allium cepa L.) belongs to the family Alliaceae, and the second vegetables in economic importance. It horticultural culture of high relevance, in central-south and in the far south, is highlighting the states of Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana. The bulbificacion only begins when the combination of the determinants of bulbificacion (photoperiod and temperature) of each cultivar is reached. It Can be grown in tropical regions with the use of vernalization of the bulbs. The objective of this study is to identify the efficiency in the production of seed, onion depending on the cut or not the bulb before the period of vernalization. The analysis of the variables consisted: humidity; number of seeds; mass of seeds for umbel; umbels number; number of seeds for umbel; total number of flowers and of fecundated flowers; number of seeds for capsule; total mass of seeds; emergency percentage; vigor percentage; index of emergency speed and mass of 100 seeds humidity; number of seeds; mass of seeds for umbel; umbels number; number of seeds for umbel; total number of flowers and of fecundated flowers; number of seeds for capsule; total mass of seeds; emergency percentage; vigor percentage; index of emergency speed and mass of 100 seeds, using the cultivars Baia Periforme and Texas Grano. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates, there was 80 plants for replicate, each parcel was conduced with 20 plants distributed in 4 lines of 5 plants with spacing of 20cm between plants and lines which was avaliated the 6 central plants. The seeds production not variated between cultivars Texas Grano e Baia Periforme. The cultivar Texas Grano showed seeds with more physiological quality. The cut or not cut of the bulbs not changed the physiological quality of the seeds. But utilization of whole bulbs resulted more yield of seeds with more flowers number and fertilized flower in Baia Periforme, more value of the total mass of seeds, number of seeds by plant and number and mass of seed by umbel in two cultivars. Abstract: there have been major changes in the epidemiological patterns for malaria in brazil in the last ten years. one of the most important features is the tendency towards focal distribution in the amazon region, instead of spreading transmission zones. this new epidemiological situation has led to changes in the control theory based on the occurrence of focal transmission of the infection. the importance of diversified control measures has thus increased, taking into account the characteristics of each transmission focus. the article comments on new proposals for control presented at the ministerial conference in amsterdam.

Sodium and health: New proposal of distribution for major meals  [PDF]

Abstract: Sodium ingestion in regular diet exceeds individuals’ physiological needs, and it is etiologically related to various diseases. Studies estimate that the worldwide average individual intake of sodium reaches almost double the maximum limit of ingestion for the day only in the main meals: lunch and dinner. Culturally, sodium is highly used in meals to enhance the flavor of preparations. Then, the purposes of this research are to evaluate sodium use in meals prepared in Popular Brazilian Restaurants and to suggest the distribution of sodium for each kind of preparation of major meals. This is an exploratory cross-sectional research based on direct documentation subdivided in six steps: determination of samples of foodservices and menus; development of the technical preparation files offered in the menus; determination of the weight of average portions offered; determination of the average amount of sodium in the portions offered; estimation of sodium distribution regarding two parameters; and determination of the sodium distribution among preparations of major meals by the two proposed parameters. For results’ analysis, portions were calculated as well as the mean contribution of the preparation in the plate weight in percentage and the mean sodium contribution. Standard deviation is also presented. We verified through the study the possibility of using the distribution of sodium by two parameters: the first one considers the ratio of components’ weight in the menu in relation to the total weight of the meal; the second one considers the distribution of sodium in preparations in relation to the total amount of sodium in the meal. We expect the results of this research to improve menu planning in restaurants as to fulfill the actual clients’ needs in order to prevent diseases.

Abstract: environmental impacts are disturbances in the ecosystem, caused by human activities. the objective of this study was to analyse the preliminary environmental study (eap) of the project "reviva lagoa itatiaia". for that, it was compared the effective legislation and related literature and the responsible team for its preparation was interviewed. we conclude that the eap does not have the environmental covering of the ecosystem that is going to be disturbed due to the lack of multidisciplinary discussion.

Abstract: purpose: to describe the integration of keloid heterograft into hamster (mesocricetus auratus) sub-epithelium. methods: the sample is formed by 18 male hamsters, not isogenetic ones, aged between 10 and 14 weeks. keloid fragments were obtained from keloid scars of the breast region of adult female mulatto patient. each hamster received keloid fragments into both of its pouches, in a total of 36 grafted fragments. animals were distributed into 6 groups for having their grafts assessed in the days 5, 12, 21, 42, 84, and 168. a macroscopic assessment is performed by comparing the pouch containing the grafted fragment, at each time point, with the same pouch in the immediate post surgical moment through a comparison of standardized photographs. under microscope, the presence of blood vases is considered within the conjunctive tissue of the grafted fragment, as a criterion of its integration. other events, as keratin secretion, the presence of cellular infiltrated, and epithelium and keloid collagen fibers aspects are also analyzed. results: macroscopy reveals intensive vascularization of the pouch up to 12 days from the transplant, and the presence of constant dark brown pigmentation on the grafted keloid fragments. in microscopy the integration of keloid fragments is found by the presence of blood capillary vases within conjunctive tissue. the presence of intensive cellular inflammatory type infiltrated up to 12 days is also observed, as well as the remaining of keloid epithelium up to 21 days, and the appearing of melanocytes from the day 42. conclusion: hamster cheek pouch represents, a priori, an experimental model for the investigation of keloid.
Experimental model in hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) to study heterologous graft of scars and cutaneous diseases in plastic surgery

Abstract: syrian golden hamster (mesocricetus auratus) has in its cheek pouches sub-epithelium an "immunologically privileged site" which allows the integration of homo- and heterologous graft. this paper describes some anatomical and histological characteristics of that site, as well as analyzes aspects related with its immune properties. it also focuses the advantages of this experimental model over other models which are natural or induced carriers of immunodeficiency. based on both these advantages and literature, this study aims to establish this model, through the performance of heterologous graft, as another option for the investigation of scar disturbances, as keloids and other diseases which may interest plastic surgery, as benign cutaneous lesions, and malignant neoplasias such as skin carcinomas and melanomas. the work also addresses perspectives for using this model, which still is a source scarcely known by brazilian medical class.
