Description of a new genus and species of Candonopsini (Crustacea, Ostracoda, Candoninae) from the alluvial valley of the Upper Parana River (Brazil, South America)

Abstract: The genus Candobrasilopsis gen. nov. is here described, with C. rochai gen. nov. sp. nov. as type species, from the alluvial valley of the Upper Paraná River. The enigmatic Candonopsis brasiliensis Sars, 1901 is here redescribed and transferred to this new genus, the new combination being Candobrasilopsis brasiliensis (Sars, 1901). The new candonid genus belongs to the tribe Candonopsini, because of the absence of the proximal seta on the caudal ramus. It is closely related to Latinopsis Karanovic & Datry, 2009, because of the relatively short terminal segment of the mandibular palp (length less than 1.5 times the basal width, while this segment is longer than three times the basal width in Candonopsis) and the large and stout b-seta on the T1. However, it differs markedly from Latinopsis in the size and shape of the calcified inner lamellae of both valves and in the type of hemipenis. We also discuss the doubtful allocation of several other genera to the Candonopsini, raise Abcandonopsis Karanovic, 2004 to generic status and reassess the uncertain position of Candonopsis anisitsi Daday, 1905 within Latinopsis.

Abstract: the purpose of the present study was to investigate temporal and longitudinal variation of caloric density of corbicula fluminea in rosana reservoir. significant differences concerning the caloric density of c. fluminea were observed throughout the year at the three reservoir sites. the caloric density variation during the year was probably related to reproductive activity, which demanded higher allocation of energy in certain period. the food source used by this species might be an important factor in the caloric value temporal and spatial variation of c. fluminea in rosana reservoir.
BENTHIC INVERTEBRATES AS PAPAGAIO RIVER WATER QUALITY INDICATOR – CAMPO MOUR O – PR

Abstract: The pollutant substance poured in the environment causes negative impacts for life forms that inhabit the sources. The biological monitoring of aquatic ecosystems has as objective the evaluation of the quality of water, in function of alterations of the community of macroinvertebrates. Among these communities Benthic is distinguished, because it reflects the state of conservation or degradation of the sources, changing their morphophysiological characteristics and its presence or absence in water. The quality of Papagaios’ river water was evaluated by physical-chemistry analysis and by density of Benthic macroinvertebrates. Four colleting stations from a stretch of the river were analyzed and samples of sediment and water were collected. At 2nd and 3rd stations there are two cold storage rooms installed at the river’s margins, which treat their effluents in stabilizing lagoons. The 4th station receives the ousting directly from a textile after it has passed by a treatment. Results obtained by biological methods indicated the presence of polluting elements in water. The river’s longitudinal gradient showed a typical sucessorial process of macroinvertebrates from polluted environments, with a significant increase in the density of Oligochaeta and Chironidade, organisms that are tolerant to impacts in water. Considering the four stations that were analyzed, the unwished impacts are occurring in three last ones with more intensity.

Abstract: In this article, I build on Goodman’s concept of mass superstition, which he applied to the schooling system. Goodman holds that we continue to believe in the value of this system, without clear evidence that it is working. I use this concept to apply the argument to the way the current system deals with parents. In spite of clear indications in the research that parental engagement with children’s learning is one of the best means to support educational achievement, particularly for children at risk of failure in the current system, parents are still routinely held at a distance from the learning processes fostered by the school system. I argue for a change to the foundational beliefs of the system, so that schools and families will work in partnership as co-constructors of children’s learning.
Spatial and temporal variation in densities of chironomid larvae (Diptera) in two lagoons and two tributaries of the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil

Abstract: chironomid larvae were collected and abiotic variables measured at monthly intervals at 21 sampling stations in two lagoons (guaraná and patos) and two tributaries (baía and ivinheima) of the upper paraná river floodplain. the genera procladius, chironomus, goeldichironomus, and polypedilum were dominant in the lagoons and in the baía river, while cryptochironomus and lopescladius were more dominant in the ivinheima river. the similarity in the generic composition of the chironomids of the lagoons and the baía river is probably due to the fact that this river presents hydrodynamic characteristics similar to those of the lagoons. the results obtained suggest that the hydrodynamics of these environments are the main factor determining spatial variation in the chironomid fauna. this is intuitively clear, as this factor itself determines sediment type, quantity of organic matter and presence or absence of aquatic macrophytes. however, on a seasonal scale, the flood pulse seems to be the main controlling factor of the temporal variation in densities and dominance of chironomid larvae. given that this factor has a large influence on the temporal dynamics of several limnological variables, this is again a logical correlation. our results suggest a strong relationship between the variations in the chironomid community and fluctuations in limnological characteristics.

Abstract:

Ectopic cervical thymic cysts are uncommon lesions and definitive preoperative diagnosis is not always possible. Surgical excision is recommended due to the small but possible chance of malignant degeneration in adulthood. We present a case of a nine year old boy with an asymptomatic lesion in his neck, discuss the differential diagnoses of such lesions and treatment considerations.

Abstract:

Biologics have greatly improved the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), demonstrating efficacy and safety in alleviating symptoms, inhibiting bone erosion, and preventing loss of function. Unmet therapeutic needs in RA remain; however, further advances require an understanding of issues left unaddressed under the current treatment paradigm. Most biologic-na?ve and biologic-pretreated patients who initiate a biologic therapy, for example, do not reach American College of Rheumatology 50% (ACR50) response, and few achieve remission. Responses are often not durable, prompting frequent treatment switching. Predictive markers are unavailable to guide therapy selection, and clinical trial data are lacking on whether a tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) is the best first-line biologic and on the optimal sequence of use for the different biologics. Risk of serious infection is the major safety concern. Translating preclinical and clinical findings into new therapeutics may help address unmet needs. An increasing body of evidence indicates that the cytokine interleukin (IL)-17A represents an important therapeutic target; ongoing trials with IL-17A inhibitors will determine whether these agents can address some of the unmet needs associated with current biologics.

Abstract:

Strata of the Late Cretaceous Niobrara Formation and Pierre Shale Group include bentonites that provide a distal record of volcanic activity taking place to the west. Detailed stratigraphic analysis combined with mineralogy and geochemistry of the bentonites indicates the following timing of events: 1) Eustatic sea level fall as a result of the end of the Niobrara Cycle; 2) Tectonic deformation of the Western Interior Seaway coincident with tectonism on the Absoroka Thrust in Wyoming and Late Canyon Range Thrust in Utah; 3) Backarc volcanism in Montana associated with the Little Elkhorn Mountain volcanic complex; 4) Forearc volcanism in the Cascades area indicates subduction of a hot oceanic crust where plagioclase in the oceanic crust is being incorporated into the melt; 5) Cessation of tectonic activity results in a return of sedimentation patterns to north-south trending belts with the Boyer Bay and Burning Brule members of the Sharon Springs Formation deposited to the east and the Mitten Black Shale Formation deposited in the basin.

Abstract:

The luminescence characteristics of feldspar from Nigeria were investigated. Without preheat treatment, the TL glow curve exhibited two peaks at 136°C and 175°C. When preheated to a temperature of 200°C only one peak was observed at 240°C. The highest net IRSL intensity was obtained for a stimulation temperature of 250°C. The TL signal is reduced by IR stimulation, and the longer the stimulation the more pronounced the effect. The dose response curves for both the TL and the IRSL showed a linear relationship for the doses considered in the study. Dose recovery test performed using the SAR method showed consistency with given dose for both TL and IRSL.
