Abstract: although several studies have been conducted to evaluate the uniformity of water application under center pivot irrigation systems, there are few studies concerning the economic perspective of such coefficient. the aim of this study is to present a methodology to accomplish an economic analysis as support for the decision-making to retrofit emitters in center pivot irrigation systems, and to attribute an economic meaning to the uniformity coefficient of water application taking into account the response function productivity to the amount of water applied and the sale price of the crops. in the hypothetic calculation example considering the variation of revenue of potato crop under center pivot irrigation system, it was verified that the area with uniformity coefficient of water application of 90% brought an income increase of br$ 1,992.00, considering an area about 1,0 ha. thus, it can be concluded that the methodology presented has met the objectives proposed in the study and made it possible to attribute an economical meaning to the coefficient of water uniformity application.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to accomplish an exploratory study of the stillage in the areas with sugarcane, through a comparative and systematic analysis. the present work was conducted in the company usaciga - sugar, alcohol and electric power s.a. located at gaúcha, northwest paraná state. treatments constituted of areas cultivated with sugarcane and submitted to different times of stillage application, respectively 1, 2, 3, 4, 12 and 20 years, and a reference area, without application. in all the studied areas trenches of 1 m3 were opened, geo referenced in 340 m of altitude for accomplishment of the soil classification and sample collection. the evaluations were performed of the density, soil particle density, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (cec), total porosity, soil water moisture for the sugarcane, besides the relationships among k, ca, mg and v%. the results indicated that the stillage application contributed to the organic carbon and potassium increase in the soil and that the sugarcane productivity presented a direct relationship with the ratio of potassium adsorption increase in the soil.

Abstract: this work was conducted in the cidade gaúcha pr, with the objective to evaluate the mechanical resistance of soil, the levels of calcium, magnesium, potassium, base saturation in the soil, the roots distribution and yield of sugarcane fertigated with wastewater (stillage) of sugarcane industry for 1, 2, 3, 4, 12 and 20 consecutive years and a control without application. the soil compaction was evaluated with penetrometer cone to 0.50 m depth in intervals of 0.02 m. the results of chemical analysis of soil samples collected between the depths of 0 to 0.20 and 0.20 to 0.40 m were evaluated. the root density was evaluated with the weight of the dry matter of roots with the monolith method retreats to each 0.10 m depths to 0.50 m. the high soil mechanical resistance occurred where wastewater of sugarcane industry was applied for 20 years. the concentration of calcium decreased after two years of application of wastewater, accompanying the fertility of the soils not showing direct connection with the productivity as well as the magnesium. the concentration of the potassium in soil presented linear relation with the productivity. the roots of the sugarcane presented a direct relation with the application time of wastewater of sugarcane industry

Abstract: as conflicts related to the water use in brazil are increasing, the implementation of policies that can mitigate these problems has become crucial. in this context, the concept of payment for environmental services (pes) has been widely accepted and applied around the world and also in brazil. the municipality of extrema, in the state of minas gerais, was the first in brazil to implement a pes program, known as "conservador das águas". this study aimed to evaluate soil losses in the watershed posses and determine the potential of the pes program to conserve soil in this watershed; moreover, to maximize the soil conservation environmental service for a given forest size and location. therefore, the effectiveness of soil conservation was analyzed in 14 areas with different soil use and forest cover. the geographic information system (sig) and the revised universal soil loss equation (rusle) were used for this purpose. soil losses in the posses watershed were estimated before and after implementing the water conservation program, at 30.63 and 7.06 mg ha-1 year-1, respectively. conservation could be optimized by implementing soil conservation practices on pasture and by optimizing the location of forest areas.

Abstract: there has been an increasing interest in the commercial production of physic nut (jatropha curcas l.) due to the recent brazilian program of biofuel production. information on this crop is still scarce and more research is necessary to set the grounds of crop adaptability in different local conditions. an experiment was set up on this issue under greenhouse environment. growth and quality of physic nut seedlings was monitored up to transplanting time. the influence of types and volumes of seedling containers was analysed along with different substrates and fertilization strategies. the water use was also detailed in the trial. results showed the best achievements of growth rate and seedling quality, at appropriate transplanting time, were reached from the combination of the commercial substrate, largest containers and fertilizers of slow nutrient liberation.
On a special class of smooth codimension two subvarieties in $\mathbb{P}^n$, $n \geq 5$
C. Folegatti
Mathematics , 2003,
Abstract: We consider smooth codimension two subcanonical subvarieties in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with $n \geq 5$, lying on a hypersurface of degree $s$ having a linear subspace of multiplicity $(s-2)$. We prove that such varieties are complete intersections. We also give a little improvement to some earlier results on the non existence of rank two vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^4$ with small Chern classes.
On smooth surfaces in P4 containing a plane curve
Ph. Ellia,C. Folegatti
Mathematics , 2003,
Abstract: We consider smooth surfaces $S \subset \Pq$ containing a plane curve $P$ and prove some general result concerning the linear system $|H-P|$. We then look at regular surfaces lying on hypersurfaces of degree $s$ having a plane of multiplicity $(s-2)$. This implies that $S$ contains a plane curve. We prove that the degree of such surfaces is bounded and for $s=4$ we compute an actual bound.

Abstract: the text below is part of a comparative study between the urban revitalization process of the "meatpacking district" in new york city, and the urban revitalization projects of regi?o da luz, in sao paulo, brazil. the article's objectives are to undertake a critical overview of the main urban sociology theories and to reflect about the ways in which comtemporary sociology is being in need of a revision of its definitions about what cities are. this analysis considers the processes of urban revitalization and gentrification, that are becoming more frequent in cities all over the world.
