Lipophilization of flavonoids for their food, therapeutic and cosmetic applications
Martina Danihelová , Jana Viskupi ová , , Ernest turdík
Acta Chimica Slovaca , 2012, DOI: 10.2478/v10188-012-0010-6
Abstract: Flavonoids represent large group of plant pigments. These polyphenolic compounds may be found in the nature as active components of fruits, vegetables and other plants and derived products. Due to established biological effects they are attractive substances for many areas of human life. Many flavonoids are nowadays used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food preparations. Their practical applications are in most cases limited by low solubility and stability in lipophilic media. Chemical or enzymatic lipophilization of flavonoid skeleton may not only increase their solubility and stability in lipophilic environment but also their biological properties. This review summarizes current knowledge in this field.

Abstract: The effect of two natural standardized plant extracts, Pycnogenol and EGb 761, on sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) activity and posttranslational modifications induced by peroxynitrite was investigated to assess their possible protective role. EGb 761 was found to have a protective effect on SERCA activity in the concentration range of 5-40 μg/ml. On the other hand, Pycnogenol caused a decrease of SERCA activity at concentrations of 25 μg/ml. EGb 761 did not prevent protein carbonyl formation upon oxidation with peroxynitrite. On the contrary, Pycnogenol at the concentrations of 5 and 10 μg/ml significantly decreased the level of protein carbonyls by 44% and 54%, respectively. Neither Pycnogenol nor EGb 761 exerted a protective effect against thiol group oxidation. The plant extracts studied modulated peroxynitrite-injured SERCA activity by different ways and failed to correlate with posttranslational modifications. Their effect seems to be associated with their ability to change SERCA conformation rather than by their antioxidant capacity.

Abstract: General technical education starting at the pre-school level and finishing at the universities of the third age is fundamental for obtaining technical literacy and sustainable development of key competencies. It also increases chances of graduates on the labour market and helps to contribute to a higher quality of their life. Underestimation of provision of general technical education is one of the reasons of lower knowledge level of population of Slovak pupils, especially in the area of creative and analytical problem-solving tasks. The project described in the paper dealt with a proposal of a videoconference system (VCS) used for the pedagogical practice, methodological-vocational consultations with tutors and cooperating schools involved in the videoconference system project. Nowadays, connection of the theory with practice in the frame of pedagogical training of students requires innovations of the existing forms. That means the acceptation and implementation of the new technologies under the condition of sustaining the contemporary positive features. The above-mentioned issue has been dealt with by the members of the scientific team at the Department of Technology and Information Technologies at Faculty of Education, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, in the frame of the research project Videoconference System in Pedagogical Practice. The project team analysed the contemporary situation in the lifelong education of teachers, orientated on the area of practice videoconference systems and the application of e-learning methods. One part of the project consisted of the demonstrations of school lessons and their analyses from the point of view of their suitability for the implementation in the pedagogical practice. Results and outcomes of the research have been formulated as the recommendations for the pedagogical theory and practice and published in the monographic study DEPE OVá, J. et al: Pedagogical Practice Supported by the Information and Communication Technologies. Synergies Europe , 2011,
Poznaniu predchádza porozumenie (Der Erkenntnis geht das Verst ndnis voran)
Jana Toma?ovi?ová
Ostium , 2007,
A deformation of surface during the construction of underground spaces
Jana Chabroňová
Acta Montanistica Slovaca , 2007,
Abstract: The tunnelling in cities with a low overburden leads to a ground movement. Relations between these deformations and the operating depth are not linear and simple; they depend on a lot of factors. An important task is to identify the sources of these settlement and to understand the mechanism of their creation for the construction of underground structures. The modelling of each stress state can simplify their understanding and reduce the problems ensued from the ground movement.
Evaluation of oxidative and nitrosative stress in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis  [PDF]

Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.511260

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder affecting the central nervous system (CNS) through demyelination and neurodegeneration. Several lines of evidence support a role for oxidative and nitrative stress (OS and NS) in pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. The mechanism of influence of OS and NS on blood-brainbarrier (BBB) has critical importance for evaluating antioxidant therapies. As far as we know, markers of oxidative and nitrative stress in MS patients have been investigated independently for their relationship with the state of the blood-brain-barrier. Blood plasma samples of 58 patients with relapse-remitting MS (RRMS) with normal (Group A, n = 48, 36.2 ± 10.5 years) and damaged BBB (Group B, n = 10, 38.2 ± 11.2 years) and of 44 healthy controls (39.2 ± 14.9 years) were analyzed. TAS (total antioxidant plasma status), lipoperoxides, protein carbonyls, 3-nitrotyrosine and uric acid were evaluated in each group. Our results confirmed decreased TAS (Group A: 1.35 ± 0.55 mmol/l, P < 0.001; Group B: 1.73 ± 0.37 mmol/l vs. 1.9 ± 0.7 mmol/l) and increased lipoperoxidation (A: 71.5 ± 42.18 nmol/ml, P < 0.01; B: 127.02 ± 74.67 nmol/ml, P < 0.001 vs. 46.6 ± 27.4 nmol/ml) in RRSM patients. The level of lipoperoxidation positively correlated with the state of BBB (P < 0.05). Elevated concentrations of protein’s carbonyls (A: 0.48 ± 0.11 nmol/mg protein, P < 0.001; B: 0.43 ± 0.14 nmol/mg protein, P < 0.05 vs. 0.31 ± 0.01 nmol/ mg protein) and 3-nitrotyrosine (A: 107.3 ± 40.7 nmol/l, P < 0.001; B: 89.2 ± 15.9 nmol/l, P < 0.001 vs. 21.6 ± 3.7 nmol/l) indicated free-radical mediated damage to plasma proteins, what was confirmed by their positive mutual correlation (P < 0.001).The level of uric acid was physiological and correlated negatively with protein’s carbonyls (P < 0.05) while there was no significant relationship

Abstract: The quality of meat changges during storage. The experiment was performed on the final fattening type of chickens COBB 500. Chickens were fed by feed mixture with aetheroleum. Premix of aetheroleum contained aetheroleum from Origanum vulgare L.) (30 g), Thymus vulgaris L. (10 g) and Cinnamomum zeylanicum (10 g). The carcass was stored at -18 °C in a freezer box. Acid number of fat in chicken meat was ranged from 4.74 to 14.57 mg KOH/g fat after 9 months and after 12 months was ranged from 5.75 to 9.11 mg KOH/g fat. doi:10.5219/267 <
Freedom of Religion, Institution of Conscientious Objection and Political Practice in Post-Communist Slovakia1

Abstract: The example of Slovakia is used to show how one of the post-socialist countries failed in fulfilling the demanding task of securing freedom of religious belief (including the right to conscientious objection) and, at the same time, securing all other human rights. An analysis of the methods used for changing the policies of pluralism and neutrality of the state into a policy of discrimination (e.g. concerning the registration duty for churches) was carried out, followed by an analysis of a mechanism used for guaranteeing freedom of conscience of the members of the Catholic Church (the so-called Vatican Treaty). The treaty violates the prohibition of discrimination against women, because it makes it more difficult for them to have access to some health care services. Our hypothesis states that the hurriedly introduced right to conscientious objection is misused in this context as a means of regulating the politics of reproduction. In general, the re-Catholisation of the Slovak Republic follows two aims—to help in the fight for votes in the elections (because 70 % of Slovaks declare their religion to be Catholic), and to improve demographic development in the Slovak Republic (declared to be catastrophic by the Catholic Church), through hindering free access to abortions.
