Motter, Daniel;Lavarda, Jairo Vinícius;Dias, Felipe Aguiar;Silva, Samuel da;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782012000500006
Abstract: vibration energy harvesting with piezoelectric materials is of practical interest because of the demand for wireless sensing devices and low-power portable electronics without external power supply. for practical use of vibration energy harvester with piezoelectric materials, it is necessary to process the alternating current (ac) by using different rectifiers' circuits in order to charge batteries with direct current (dc) or to feed electronic devices. unfortunately, most of the models used focused on simplifying the energy harvesting circuit into a simple resistive load. in the real-world applications, the energy harvesting external circuit is more complex than a simple load resistance. in this sense, the goal of the present paper is to describe a comprehensive strategy for power harvesting device to estimate the output power provided by a cantilever beam with the electrodes of the piezoceramic layers connected to a standard rectifier circuit. the true electrical components were considered in the full-wave rectifier circuit with four diodes in bridge. a very simple and comprehensive description for choosing the capacitance and resistance loads is provided. in order to illustrate the results, numerical simulations and experimental verifications are also performed to ensure the accuracy. all tests and results are described and detailed using matlab, the simpowersystem toolbox of the simulink and an experimental setup.

Abstract: influenced by gravidity, bone tissue experiences stronger or lighter deformation according to the strength of the activities of daily life. activities resulting in impact are particularly known to stimulate osteogenesis, thus reducing bone mass loss. knowing how bone cells recognize the mechanical deformation imposed to the bone and trigger a series of biochemical chain reactions is of crucial importance for the development of therapeutic and preventive practices in orthopaedic activity. there is still a long way to run until we can understand the whole process, but current knowledge has shown a strong progression, with researches being conducted focused on therapies. for a mechanical sign to be transformed into a biological one (mechanotransduction), it must be amplified at cell level by the histological structure of bone tissue, producing tensions in cell membrane proteins (integrins) and changing their spatial structure. such change activates bindings between these and the cytoskeleton, producing focal adhesions, where cytoplasmatic proteins are recruited to enable easier biochemical reactions. focal adhesion kinase (fak) is the most important one being self-activated when its structure is changed by integrins. activated fak triggers a cascade of reactions, resulting in the activation of erk-1/2 and akt, which are proteins that, together with fak, regulate the production of bone mass. osteocytes are believed to be the mechanosensor cells of the bone and to transmit the mechanical deformation to osteoblasts and osteoclasts. ionic channels and gap junctions are considered as intercellular communication means for biochemical transmission of a mechanical stimulus. these events occur continuously on bone tissue and regulate bone remodeling.

Pedrazzi, Vinícius;Dias, Katia Regina Hostilio Cervantes;Rode, Sigmar de Mello;
Brazilian Oral Research , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242008000500004
Abstract: the concepts of health promotion, self-care and community participation emerged during the 1970s and, since then, their application has grown rapidly in the developed world, showing evidence of effectiveness. in spite of this, a major part of the population in the developing countries still has no access to specialized dental care such as endodontic treatment, dental care for patients with special needs, minor oral surgery, periodontal treatment and oral diagnosis. this review focuses on a program of the brazilian federal government named ceos (dental specialty centers), which is an attempt to solve the dental care deficit of a population that is suffering from oral diseases and whose oral health care needs have not been addressed by the regular programs offered by the sus (unified national health system). literature published from 2000 to the present day, using electronic searches by medline, scielo, google and hand-searching was considered. the descriptors used were brazil, oral health, health policy, health programs, and dental specialty centers. there are currently 640 ceos in brazil, distributed in 545 municipal districts, carrying out dental procedures with major complexity. based on this data, it was possible to conclude that public actions on oral health must involve both preventive and curative procedures aiming to minimize the oral health distortions still prevailing in developing countries like brazil.

Pesquisa Odontológica Brasileira , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-74912003000100017
Abstract: candidosis is the most common fungal infection in the oral cavity, and is usually associated with local and systemic predisposing factors. the ocurrence and relevance of candidal infection in oral lesions such as liquen planus, leukoplakias and carcinomas are still to be understood. the aim of the present study was to define the frequency of infection by candida sp. on biopsies of oral mucosal lesions and associate its presence with malignant and dysplastic lesions. histopathology reports issued between 1990 and 2001 inclusive were reviewed. three sections of each mucosal biopsy were stained using the periodic acid-schiff (pas) technique. from the 832 biopsies 27.2% were pas positive, of which 83.25% were obtained from male patients. there was positive association between fungic infection and mild, moderate and severe epithelial dysplasia, squamous cell carcinoma and hiperqueratosis (p < 0.05). there was no association between fungic infection and inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, lichen planus and pyogenic granuloma (p < 0.05). the frequency of infection in the tongue was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in the other sites. our results do not show a causal relation between candida sp. and dysplastic lesions and carcinomas, but do confirm the higher presence of that microrganism in those lesions.
