Abstract: The transposition of the S o Francisco River is considered one of the greatest engineering works in Brazil of all time since it will cross an extensive agricultural region of continental dimensions, involving environmental impacts, water, soil, irrigation, water payment and other multidisciplinary themes. Taking into account its importance, this subject was incorporated into a discipline of UFSCar (Federal University of S o Carlos - Brazil) named "Pollution and Environmental Impacts". It was noted strong reaction against the project, even before the presentation. To allow a critical analysis, the first objective was to compile the main technical data and environmental impacts. The second objective was to detect the three most important aspects that cause reaction, concluding for the following reasons: assumption that the volume of water to be transferred was much greater than it actually is proposed in the project; lack of knowledge about similar project already done in Brazil; the idea that the artificial canal to be built was much broader than that proposed by the project. The participants' opinion about "volume to be transferred" was raised quantitatively four times: 2-undergraduate students; 1-graduate; 1-outside community. The average resulted 14 times larger than that proposed in the project, significant according to t-test. It was concluded that the reaction to water transfer project is due in part to the ignorance combined with a preconceived idea that tend to overestimate the magnitude of environmental impacts. Operant measurement of auditory threshold in prelingually deaf users of cochlear implants: II

Abstract: two experiments evaluated an operant procedure for establishing stimulus control using auditory and electrical stimuli as a baseline for measuring the electrical current threshold of electrodes implanted in the cochlea. twenty-one prelingually deaf children, users of cochlear implants, learned a go/no go auditory discrimination task (i.e., pressing a button in the presence of the stimulus but not in its absence). when the simple discrimination baseline became stable, the electrical current was manipulated in descending and ascending series according to an adapted staircase method. thresholds were determined for three electrodes, one in each location in the cochlea (basal, medial, and apical). stimulus control was maintained within a certain range of decreasing electrical current but was eventually disrupted. increasing the current recovered stimulus control, thus allowing the determination of a range of electrical currents that could be defined as the threshold. the present study demonstrated the feasibility of the operant procedure combined with a psychophysical method for threshold assessment, thus contributing to the routine fitting and maintenance of cochlear implants within the limitations of a hospital setting.

Abstract: soybean rust chemical control depends on the correct selection of the spray nozzles. this study evaluated the spray nozzle effect on soybean rust control application. a randomized complete-block design with four replications was used, in a factorial model (4 x 2) + 1: four spray nozzles (hollow cone spray nozzles, with and without air induction, pre-orifice twin flat fan and turbo twin flat fan), two spray volumes (150 and 200 l ha-1) and the control (non-treated plot). m-soy 8008 soybean (early cycle) was sown. after the application of the fungicide tebuconazole, with the different nozzles and volume rates, the spray deposition on the plant canopy, rust severity, defoliation level and yield were evaluated. the results showed that there was no influence of the nozzle type neither of the application volume in rust control. in the canopy lower part, the coverage obtained with the four nozzles was less than 7% of the area, therefore, it is necessary to find strategies to increase that deposition. the fungicide decreased rust severity, increasing soybean yield, which was, on average, 157% greater than that obtained in the control.

Abstract: febr2 has reacted with an equivalent of mnt2- (mnt = cis-1,2-dicyanoethylene-1,2-dithiolate) and the α-diimine l (l = 1,10'-phenantroline, 2,2'-bipyridine) in thf solution, and followed by adding of t-butyl-isocyanide to give [fe(mnt)(l)(t-bunc)2] neutral compound. the products were characterized by infrared, uv-visible and m?ssbauer spectroscopy, besides thermogravimetric and conductivity data. the geometry in the equilibrium was calculated by the density functional theory and the electronic spectrum by the time-dependent. the experimental and theoretical results in good agreement have defined an octahedral geometry with two isocyanide neighbours. the π→π* intraligand electronic transition was not observed for cis-isomers in the near-ir spectral region.

Abstract: the investigation of the ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract from leaves of almeidea rubra a. st.-hil. (rutaceae) afforded two new compounds 4-methoxy-6-[2-(methylamino)phenyl]-2h-pyran-2-one and rel-(7r,8r)-8-[(e)-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-1-butenyl]-4,8-dimethoxy-5,6,7,8 -tetrahydrofuro[2,3-b]quinoline-7-yl acetate, along with the known compounds arborinine, n-methyl-1-hydroxy-3-methoxyacridone, skimmianine, kokusagine, isodutaduprine, isoskimmianine, and isokokusagine. their structures were established based on their spectral data, and for the new compounds these data are described herein. additionally, these compounds were assayed on the tripomastigote forms of trypanosoma cruzi showing moderate trypanocidal activity.
