Attributes of Biothic Indicators as an Instrument for Assessing Ecosystem Integrity  [PDF]
Paula Catalina Pinilla-Cortés, Jaime Alberto Moreno-Gutiérrez
Open Access Library Journal (OALib Journal) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/oalib.1105540
Abstract:
The biotic indicators, or bioindicators, constitute a reference that con-tributes to the resolution of different issues associated with the state and evolution of the natural habitats where they are located. The information they provide can be interpreted mainly in terms of sensitivity, tolerance to different types of stress and the integrity of a forest ecosystem. The objective is (commentary 1) to present the characteristics of the bioin-dicators, which are capable of reflecting the ecosystemic integrity and provide valuation references in forest habitats. The attributes were re-ported thanks to the methodological strategy of bibliographic review through a theoretical sampling, taking into account 44 bibliographical sources that covered a time lapse between 1985 and 2016. As a result of the review, there were obtained a total of seventeen prevalent attributes in bioindicator species. Part of the discussions focus on recognizing that the study of bioindicators, and in general the principles associated with bioindication, provide potential criteria to resolve concerns beyond fully biological or ecological aspects and that are relevant in scenarios of environmental economic and/or ecological valuation. Finally, this review concludes that it has been possible to present a consensus of attributes and, at the same time, show some emerging attributes associated with biotic indicators that contribute to the analysis of the selection of bioin-dicator species in different studies.

Emission-factor uncertainties in maritime transport in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain
J. Moreno-Gutiérrez,V. Durán-Grados,Z. Uriondo,J. ángel Llamas
Atmospheric Measurement Techniques Discussions , 2012, DOI: 10.5194/amtd-5-5953-2012
Abstract: A reliable and up-to-date maritime emission inventory is essential for atmospheric scientists quantifying the impact of shipping. The objective of this study is to estimate the atmospheric emissions of SO2, NOx, CO2 and PM10 by international merchant shipping in 2007 in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain, including the Algeciras Bay by two methods. Two methods (both bottom-up) have been used in this study: 1. Establishing engine power-based emission factors (g kWh 1, EPA) or the mass of pollutant per work performed by the engine for each of the relevant components of the exhaust gas from diesel engines and power for each ship. 2. Establishing fuel-based emission factors (kg emitted/t of fuel) or mass of pollutant per mass of combusted fuel for each of the relevant components of the exhaust gas and a fuel-consumption inventory (IMO). In both methods, the means to estimate engine power and fuel-consumption inventories are the same. The exhaust from boilers and incinerators is regarded as a small contributor and excluded. In total, an estimated average of 1 389 111.05 t of CO2, 23 083.09 t of SO2, 32 005.63 t of NOx and 2972 t of PM10 were emitted from January 2007 until December 2007 by international and domestic shipping. The estimated total fuel consumption amounts to 437 405.84 t. The major differences between the estimates generated by the two methods are for NOx (16% in certain cases) and CO (up to 23%). A total difference for all compounds of 3038 t (approximately 2%) has been found between the two methods but it is not areasonable estimate of uncertainty. Therefore, the results for both methods may be considered acceptable because the actual uncontrolled deviations appear in the changes in emission factors that occur for a given engine with age. These deviations are often difficult to quantify and depend on individual shipboard service and maintenance routines. Emission factors for CO and NOx are not constant and depend on engine condition. For example, tests conducted by the authors of this paper demonstrate that when an engine operates under normal in-service conditions, the emissions are within limits. However, with a small fault in injection timing, the NOx emission exceeds the limits (30% higher value in some cases). A fault in the maintenance of the injection nozzles increases the CO emission (15% higher value in some cases).
Neurinoma del plexo braquial simulando metastasis de adenocarcinoma de mama Schwannoma of the brachial plexus resembling a breast adenocarcinoma metastasis

Medicina (Buenos Aires) , 2011,
Schwa nomas originating from the brachial plexus, although rare, may be mistaken for another type of tumour. A 40 year-old woman, who had been treated years earlier for a breast adenocarcinoma, showed in the 5-year follow-up magnetic resonance examination a localized lesion in the right brachial plexus. The presumptive radiological diagnosis was a metastasis from the primary adenocarcinoma. Following surgical access via the right axilla, a well-circumscribed mass in the brachial plexus was detected. Under intraoperative electrophysiological guidance, the lesion was observed to depend on the ulnar nerve and its complete resection was possible without compromising nerve function. Histological findings indicated a schwannoma thus ruling out the presence of metastasis. The postoperative development was uneventful and six years after surgery, the patient is to date tumour-free. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a brachial plexus schwannoma arising from the ulnar branch. Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring is essential for a good surgical outcome.

Abstract: Introduction: Both Diabetes and cardiovascular disease have an important burden of morbidity and death worldwide, being prison’s population in an increased risk for those pathologies. Objective: To assess the cardiovascular disease risk and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk in a population of prisoners in Pereira. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted, selecting the population by convenience. Instruments designed to assess type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risks in ten years were applied. Results: Sixty one males were included in the population, mean age was 48 years. The main cardiovascular risk factors found were: Low vegetables intake (70.5%), abdominal obesity (65.6%), sedentarism (62.3%) and smoking (54.1%); the ten years risk for type 2 diabetes was above low in 66% of the population and the cardiovascular disease risk was between 10% and 20% in 10% of the cases and higher than 40% in 16% of them. Discussion: The high prevalence of modifiable risk factors and measured risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes make it necessary to design and apply programs that aim to promote, prevent and diagnose these pathologies that are more extensive and effective than the current ones.
