Chagasic meningoencephalitis in the immunodeficient
JAVIER, LAZO;MENESES, ANTONIO CARLOS OLIVEIRA;ROCHA, ADEMIR;FERREIRA, MARCELO SIM?O;MARQUEZ, JAIME OLAVO;CHAPADEIRO, EDMUNDO;LOPES, EDILSON REIS;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1998000100015
Abstract: based on their own experience and on the literature, the authors compare the brain pathology due to hiv+ associated trypanosoma cruzi reactived infection to that described for the natural history of the chagas' disease (cd). the peculiar focal necrotizing chagasic meningoencephalitis (mecnf) which appears only in immunedeficient chagasics, especially when the deficiency is due hiv is a safe criterion for reactivation of cd. mecnf morphologic findings are unlike to those found either for some cases of acute phase cd or for chronic nervous form of cd.
Terson's syndrome: report of a case with favorable outcome
PINNOLA, GIULIO CESARE;CORRêA, SéRGIO MURILO;RIBEIRO, S?NIA BEATRIZ F.;LEBOREIRO-FERNANDEZ, ALFREDO;MARQUEZ, JAIME OLAVO;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1998000100024
Abstract: terson's syndrome is characterized by the presence of a subarachnoid hemorrhage accompanied by retinal and vitreous hemorrhage leading to a not very favorable prognosis. we describe a case with a good outcome, probably because of a early diagnosis and medical intervention. we emphasize the routine optician's check up as very important in the evaluation of a prognosis in the cases of a suspect intracranial hemorrhage .
Meningoencefalites toxoplásmica e chagásica em pacientes com infec??o pelo vírus da imunodeficiência humana: diagnóstico diferencial anatomopatológico e tomográfico
Lazo, Javier E.;Meneses, Ant?nio Carlos Oliveira;Rocha, Ademir;Frenkel, Jack K.;Marquez, Jaime Olavo;Chapadeiro, Edmundo;Reis Lopes, Edison;
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86821998000200001
Abstract: twenty-two hiv+ patients with encephalitis were studied. of these, 7 had meningoencephalitis due to toxoplasma gondii (mt) and 15 due to trypanosoma cruzi (mc). pathologic and computerized axial tomography (cat) changes were compared. we found that focal necrotizing encephalitis due to toxoplasma involved the cerebral cortex and the basal ganglia, whereas lesions due to trypanosoma cruzi were centered in the white matter, sometimes extending into the cortex. hemorrhages, myelin lesions and organisms were more pronounced in chagasic than in toxoplasmic encephalitis. these findings are consistent with the literature reviewed.

Batatas-semente submetidas a baixa temperatura e reflexos s?bre a cultura
Boock, Olavo José;
Bragantia , 1962, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051962000100001
Abstract: tubers of three different potato varieties, eigenheimer, datura, and 5055/306, were stored, for planting purposes, both in a cold chamber and under normal storage conditions. temperature in cold chamber was kept at 4° centrigade, and air moisture at 85%, while outside the chamber the temperature ranged from 16 to 28° centigrades, with air moisture from 55 to 70%. the periods of tuber storage varied from 10 to 110 days, both inside and outside the cold chamber. samples of each potato variety stored under those different conditions were taken and planted in the field according to a statistical design. it has been found that differences due to varieties were greater than those due to treatments. the results are to be token as preliminary, since the period of only 110 days was not long enough to expect greater differences between treatments, principally if we consider the existence of difference of food reserve and water losses due to a greater or lesser sprouting intensity outside and inside the cold chamber. storage during 30 - 50 - 60 - and 100 days, in the cold chamber, beginning just after harwest time has been found, for eigenheimer variety, to induce better yields than other treatments did. results obtained with the classification of yield in different classes, have shown a more important influence of the varieties themselves than of the conditions under which the tubers were stored.
Corte de tubérculos de batatinha (Solatium tuberosum L.): parte I - Estudos comparativos s?bre plantio de tubérculos inteiros, e cortados em "ápice" e "base"
Boock, Olavo J.;
Bragantia , 1947, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051947000100001
Abstract: several trials were conducted with potatoes (solanum tuberosum l.) to study the relative value of the apical and basal sets, as compared to whole seed tubers, since cutting potatoes before planting has been a matter of discussion. the experiments have been carried out on a high and on a low districts, say, respectively, at joanópolis mountainous region, and at taubaté flat lands, the latter on the right bank of paraíba river, both in the state of s?o paulo. results have shown that on high lands, over 1,000 meters above sea level, the cutting process may be accomplished, though the basal sets have yielded less than apical ones, and whole tubers. apical sets produced as well as whole tubers. at taubaté district, aproximately 500 meters above sea level, where potato crop is usually grown from may to september in the dry season, on irrigated flat lands, after rice has been harvested, best results were secured from whole seed tubers. apical and basal sets decayed easily, due probably to irrigation water ; for this reason they are not to be used.
Corte de tubérculos de batatinha (Solanum tuberosum L.) Parte II: estudos comparativos s?bre o plantio de tubérculos inteiros e cortados no sentido "longitudinal"
Boock, Olavo J.;
Bragantia , 1947, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051947000700002
Abstract: experiments with cut potato seed tubers to compare the relative value of lateral parts with whole tubers were conducted at four diilerent districts in the state of s?o paulo : joanópolis, at high and mountainous location, (about 1.000 ms. above sea level) ; taubaté, in the flat lands on the right bank of the paraíba river (about 500 ms high) ; sorocaba, (at 550 ms) and sta. rita do passa quatro (at 800 ms of altitude). whole seed tubers yielded better than lateral sets in all these places. cutting gave good results only in joanopolis. in the districts with medium altitude good yields were obtained with cut-seeds only by means of irrigation. these results agree with those already obtained in prior experiments (1) which have shown that whole seed tubers give also better yields in comparison with those secured from plantings made with basal and apical sets.
Comportamento de variedades de batatinha importadas do Canadá
Boock, Olavo José;
Bragantia , 1961, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051961000100036
Abstract: nine irishi potato varieties imported from canada were studied in 14 field trials over a period of years. the results obtained have shown that green mountain was the highest yiel-der, but the least resistant to late blight. this variety, as well as sebago, showed the highest incidence of internal brown spot. all varieties tried were found to be fairly susceptible to early blight, one of the important disease problems of this crop in sao paulo. irish cobbler gave the best yields under irrigation and on flat low land.
Adubos fosfatados na cultura da batata
Boock, Olavo José;
Bragantia , 1945, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051945000500004
Abstract: the experiments herein reported deal mainly with the comparative effect of five sources of phosphate on the yield of the potato plant. the trials were carried out at three localities in the state of s?o paulo, viz. : campinas, taubaté and joanópolis. soil analyses from the test plots showed variation in phosphorus content. this was low at joanópolis, medium at campinas, and high at taubaté. nitrogen was added as ammonium sulphate, nitrate of soda, and potassium nitrate ; potash, as potassium sulphate or potassium carbonate (ashes). phosphorus was suplied by superphosphates (trade names of dawco and granulated, of american origin) by "cibraphosphate", "serranaphosphate" and "serranaphosphatepotassico" from local manufacturers and by bone meal. all forms of nitrogen or potash tried were about equally effective for potatoes when applied with any of the phosphates. phosphorus was found to be the most important element to increase production. applications of only nitrogen plus potash, brought no significant increase in yield. the greatest yields were obtained with superphosphates in complete formulae. the other forms of phosphate fertilizers were better than the controls and the nitrogen plus potash treatments, but inferior to the superphosphates. the superiority of the superphosphates is ascribed to their greater solubility, which renders the phosphorus readily available to the potato plant.
Análise metafórico-metonímica do processo de constitui??o do pensamento da saúde pública acerca da adolescente grávida: os anos 60
Reis, Alberto Olavo Advincula;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1998000500021
Abstract: this article is an analytical essay on a historical moment in the formation of public health thinking vis-à-vis adolescent pregnancy: the 1960s. its relevance lies in the fact that several assertions produced then still bear great influence on ideas and models concerning adolescent maternity in current public health thinking. from the technical and methodological point of view, one can assume two levels: an explicit one pertaining to the documentary record, consisting of messages clearly communicated by authors of scientific texts, and an implicit one, with elements that could only surface in text discourse through stylistic effects. based on such assumptions, we explored the specialized literature using a metaphorical/metonymical analysis in search of such implicit dimensions.
