Photosynthesis and Yellow Vine Syndrome of American Cranberry

Abstract: The American cranberry ( Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) contains rich antioxidants and has significant health benefits in fighting a variety of human diseases. In the past ten years, cranberry growers have reported yellow vine syndrome, which is associated with reduced photosynthetic performance, in the cranberry bogs. It has been found that the yellow vine syndrome of cranberry is associated with nutritional imbalance; it might be an issue for cranberry quality and food security as well as the crop production. This review evaluates the present state of knowledge of yellow vine syndrome, together with recent advances that are resulting from an improved mechanistic understanding and a possible solution that will be of considerable value to cranberry growers. This review also includes results from the author’s own laboratory. Water stress, nutritional imbalance, and photoinhibition are the likely reasons for producing yellow vine of cranberry. Future endeavors should be placed on the combination of genetic, biochemical, and biophysical techniques at the molecular level and plant physiology at the field and greenhouse level. This may provide specific information in order to understand the molecular details of yellow vine of cranberry as well as a tool for guiding future breeding efforts and management practices.
Manganese-based Materials Inspired by Photosynthesis for Water-Splitting

Abstract: In nature, the water-splitting reaction via photosynthesis driven by sunlight in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria stores the vast solar energy and provides vital oxygen to life on earth. The recent advances in elucidating the structures and functions of natural photosynthesis has provided firm framework and solid foundation in applying the knowledge to transform the carbon-based energy to renewable solar energy into our energy systems. In this review, inspired by photosynthesis robust photo water-splitting systems using manganese-containing materials including Mn-terpy dimer/titanium oxide, Mn-oxo tetramer/Nafion, and Mn-terpy oligomer/tungsten oxide, in solar fuel production are summarized and evaluated. Potential problems and future endeavors are also discussed.

The Difficulty of Gate Control in Molecular Transistors

Abstract: The electrostatic gating effects on molecular transistors are investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. When molecular energy levels are away from the Fermi energy they can be linearly shifted by the gate voltage, which is consistent with recent experimental observations [Nature 462, 1039 (2009)]. However, when they move near to the Fermi energy (turn-on process), the shifts become extremely small and almost independent of the gate voltage. The fact that the conductance may be beyond the gate control in the "ON" state will challenge the implementation of molecular transistors.
Verification of Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with Big-Bang Nucleosyntheis theory

Abstract: The current Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) model has been constructed based on a nuclear reaction network operating with thermal reactivities of Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) distribution plasma. However, does the classical MB distribution still hold for the extremely high-temperature (in order of 10$^9$ K) plasma involved in the Big-Bang environment? In this work, we have investigated the impact of non-extensive Tsallis statistics (in $q$-Guassian distribution) on the thermonuclear reaction rates. We show for the first time that the reverse rates are extremely sensitive to the non-extensive $q$ parameter. Such sensitivity does not allow a large deviation of non-extensive distribution from the usual MB distribution. With a newly developed BBN code, the impact of primordial light-element abundances on $q$ values has been studied by utilizing the most recent BBN cosmological parameters and the available nuclear cross-section data. For the first time, we have accurately verified the microscopic MB distribution with the macroscopic BBN theory and bservation. By comparing the recent observed primordial abundances with our predictions, only a tiny deviation of $\pm$6$\times$10$^{-4}$ at most can be allowed for the MB distribution. However, validity of the classical statistics needs to be studied further for the self-gravitating stars and binaries of high-density environment, with the extreme sensitivity of reverse rate on $q$ found here.
Lossy-to-Lossless Compression of Hyperspectral Image Using the 3D Set Partitioned Embedded ZeroBlock Coding Algorithm  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional Set Partitioned Embedded ZeroBlock Coding (3D SPEZBC) lossy-to-lossless compression algorithm for hyperspectral image which is an improved three-dimensional Embedded ZeroBlock Coding (3D EZBC) algorithm. The algorithm adopts the 3D integer wavelet packet transform proposed by Xiong et al. to decorrelate, the set-based partitioning zeroblock coding to process bitplane coding and the con-text-based adaptive arithmetic coding for further entropy coding. The theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that 3D SPEZBC not only provides the same excellent compression performances as 3D EZBC, but also reduces the memory requirement compared with 3D EZBC. For achieving good coding performance, the diverse wave-let filters and unitary scaling factors are compared and evaluated, and the best choices were given. In comparison with several state-of-the-art wavelet coding algorithms, the proposed algorithm provides better compression performance and unsupervised classification accuracy.
Spectral Analysis and Variable Structural Control of an Elastic Beam  [PDF]

An elastic beam system formulated by partial differential equations with initial and boundary conditions is investigated in this paper. An evolution equation corresponding with the beam system is established in an appropriate Hilbert space. The spectral analysis and semigroup generation of the system operator of the beam system are discussed. Finally, a variable structural control is proposed and a significant result that the solution of the system is exponentially stable under a variable structural control with some appropriate conditions is obtained.

Does the Pay Gap in the Top Management Team Incent Enterprise Innovation?—Based on Property Rights and Financing Constraints  [PDF]

Abstract: Using the patent applications data of listed firms in China from 2005 to 2014, this paper examines how the pay gap in the top management team influences enterprise innovation. The result shows that the number of patent applications especially the number of patents for invention increases significantly when the pay gap enlarges. It means the enlargement of the pay gap in the top management team could incent executives to make innovation decisions, to promote outputs of high-quality patents for invention. Finally the quality of enterprise innovation has been improved. Especially, the incentive effect of the pay gap in the top management team is more significant in private enterprises and enterprises with strong financing constraints. Therefore, enterprises in these two groups have better innovation behaviors.
An assessment of Bayesian bias estimator for numerical weather prediction

Abstract: Various statistical methods are used to process operational Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) products with the aim of reducing forecast errors and they often require sufficiently large training data sets. Generating such a hindcast data set for this purpose can be costly and a well designed algorithm should be able to reduce the required size of these data sets. This issue is investigated with the relatively simple case of bias correction, by comparing a Bayesian algorithm of bias estimation with the conventionally used empirical method. As available forecast data sets are not large enough for a comprehensive test, synthetically generated time series representing the analysis (truth) and forecast are used to increase the sample size. Since these synthetic time series retained the statistical characteristics of the observations and operational NWP model output, the results of this study can be extended to real observation and forecasts and this is confirmed by a preliminary test with real data. By using the climatological mean and standard deviation of the meteorological variable in consideration and the statistical relationship between the forecast and the analysis, the Bayesian bias estimator outperforms the empirical approach in terms of the accuracy of the estimated bias, and it can reduce the required size of the training sample by a factor of 3. This advantage of the Bayesian approach is due to the fact that it is less liable to the sampling error in consecutive sampling. These results suggest that a carefully designed statistical procedure may reduce the need for the costly generation of large hindcast datasets.
