Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1088/2041-8205/790/2/L25
Abstract: We study the stars of the binary system 16 Cygni to determine with high precision their chemical composition. Knowing that the component B has a detected planet of at least 1.5 Jupiter masses, we investigate if there are chemical peculiarities that could be attributed to planet formation around this star. We perform a differential abundance analysis using high resolution (R = 81,000) and high S/N (~700) CFHT/ESPaDOnS spectra of the 16 Cygni stars and the Sun; the latter was obtained from light reflected of asteroids. We determine differential abundances of the binary components relative to the Sun and between components A and B as well. We achieve a precision of about 0.005 dex and a total error ~0.01 dex for most elements. The effective temperatures and surface gravities found for 16 Cyg A and B are Teff = 5830+/-7 K, log g = 4.30+/-0.02 dex, and Teff = 5751+/-6 K, log g = 4.35+/-0.02 dex, respectively. The component 16 Cyg A has a metallicity ([Fe/H]) higher by 0.047+/-0.005 dex than 16 Cyg B, as well as a microturbulence velocity higher by 0.08 km/s. All elements show abundance differences between the binary components, but while the volatile difference is about 0.03 dex, the refractories differ by more and show a trend with condensation temperature, which could be interpreted as the signature of the rocky accretion core of the giant planet 16 Cyg Bb. We estimate a mass of about 1.5-6 M_Earth for this rocky core, in good agreement with estimates of Jupiter's core.
Molecular aspects of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma carcinogenesis
Lehrbach, Dárcio Matenhauer;Nita, Marcelo Eidi;Cecconello, Ivan;,;
Arquivos de Gastroenterologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-28032003000400011
Abstract: background: the development of human esophageal cancer is a multistep, progressive process. an early indicator of this process is an increased proliferation of esophageal epithelial cells morphologically including basal cell hyperplasia, dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. the process of tumorigenesis at cellular level is related to disorders of the control of cell proliferation and differentiation and controlled cell death (apoptosis). most of cancer cells contain genetic alterations related to the control of these processes, including transcription factors and apoptosis related proteins. aim: in this review, the current knowledge of the genetic profile of this subtype of esophageal tumor is discussed, focusing on the potential of the development of novel tools for clinical management of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. conclusions: the advances in the field of molecular biology have let us to deeper our knowledge of the process of carcinogenesis of esophagus. ideally, this knowledge should be translated in benefits for patients suffering from cancer. thus, better understanding of molecular alterations during carcinogenesis is expected to improve tumor control and prevention and also may lead to better disease management.

Suetake, Marcelo;Silva, Ivan Nunes da;Goedtel, Alessandro;
Sba: Controle & Automa??o Sociedade Brasileira de Automatica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-17592010000300003
Abstract: this paper presents a methodology for the implementation of embedded fuzzy system algorithms to be built in digital signal processors. for the purpose of this application, the technique was applied for induction motor scalar speed control. the adopted control strategy is to adjust the amplitude and frequency (v/f) of fundamental supply voltage signal of induction motor, which is achieved by a three-phase pulse width modulation inverter. the fuzzy control system was therefore entirely embedded in dsp by applying simplification techniques, which aim at computational cost and memory requirements reduction. the controller performance in relation to load torque and speed reference variations was evaluated by experimental tests. a comparative analysis with conventional pi and pid controllers was also achieved.

Thirty years of blackouts: a case report of swallow syncope
Irene Lambiris,Ivan Mendoza,Marcelo Helguera,Jose Baez Escudero
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives , 2013, DOI: 10.3402/jchimp.v3i1.20323
Abstract: Deglutition syncope has been demonstrated in isolated case reports, the first being described over 50 years ago. It is thought to be caused by a hypersensitive vagotonic reflex in response to esophageal dilation after swallowing. It can cause syncope due to complete atrioventricular (AV) block and acute reduction of cardiac output. Although rare, its lethality is worthy of discussion, as early recognition can offer complete treatment with placement of a pacemaker. A 54-year-old man presented with 30 years of lightheadedness and syncope, followed by disorientation and tremors, after eating sandwiches or drinking carbonated beverages. He initially was evaluated by a neurologist. Work-up included cardiac 2D transthoracic echocardiogram, electroencephalogram, swallow stud, pulmonary function tests, electrocardiogram, and cardiac stress testing. All tests were within normal limits, and it was determined that he was suffering from convulsive syncope and deglutition syncope. Referral to the cardiac electrophysiology department with tilt-table testing accompanied by swallow evaluation was then recommended. The tests demonstrated marked vagal response resulting in sinus bradycardia with second-degree AV block and pauses up to 3.5 seconds. Patient experienced near syncope. A rate-responsive, dual-chamber Boston Scientific pacemaker with DDDR programming was implanted. Patient has remained asymptomatic at follow-up.
