Abstract: the outspread and urbanization of visceral leishmaniasis (vl) in campo grande, state of mato grosso do sul, lead us to undertake the present study over diversity and abundance of sand flies in the urban area to compare with previous search carried out during 1999/2000, before the identification of the disease in the human population.the captures were carried out with automatic light traps, weekly, from february 2004 to february 2005 on three sites including a forested area (zé pereira), two peridomicilies (shelters of domestic animals and cultivation areas), and intradomicilie. in the present study 110 collections were obtained during 13 months for 1320 h of collections, resulting in 5004 specimens, 3649 males and 1355 females belonging to the 20 following species: brumptomyia avellari, brumptomyia sp., bichromomyia flaviscutellata, evandromyia lenti, e. termitophila, e. cortelezzii, e. borrouli, lutzomyia sp., l. longipalpis, micropygomyia quinquefer, n. antunesi, n. whitmani, pintomyia christenseni, pi. damascenoi, psathyromyia aragaoi, ps. campograndensis, ps. hermanlenti, ps. shannoni, pychodopygus claustrei, and sciopemyia sordellii. l. longipalpis was the most abundant species in the anthropic environment with 92.22% of the captures. this shows an increase of sixty times in the density of l. longipalpis compared to the last sand fly evaluation in 1999/2000. the high density of l. longipalpis in campo grande is the main factor of risk in transmission of the disease to human in the urban area. the capture of n. antunesi, typical specie from amazonian region, in mato grosso do sul is reported for the first time.
Comparative Evaluation of the Efficacy of the Bimatoprost 0.03%, Brimonidine 0.2%, Brinzolamide 1%, Dorzolamide 2%, and Travoprost 0.004%/Timolol 0.5%-Fixed Combinations in Patients Affected by Open-Angle Glaucoma  [PDF]

Open Journal of Ophthalmology (OJOph) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojoph.2012.24027
Abstract: Purpose: This is a retrospective, comparative, head-to-head, not commissioned study about the efficacy of bimato-prost 0.03%, brimonidine 0.2%, brinzolamide 1%, dorzolamide 2%, and travoprost 0.004%/timolol 0.5%-fixed combinations in patients affected by na?ve open-angle glaucoma and IOP > 25 mmHg. Patients and Methods: Files from 70 patients (35 M, 35 F, mean age 69.52 y, S.D. 11.56, range: 37-87y) in our Glaucoma Service were retrospectively analyzed as long as 12 months. Every subgroup, including 14 age- and sex-matched patients, was allocated to 1 of the 5 groups of the fixed combinations monotherapy. Data recorded after 3 months follow-up were statistically analyzed by descriptive and ANOVA statistics as percentage of IOP reduction from baseline. Results: All the fixed combinations were effective in lowering IOP. The mean percentage reduction was: brimonidine/timolol 43.57%, dorzolamide/timolol 37.67%, bimatoprost/timolol 35.60%, travoprost/timolol 33.25% and brinzolamide/timolol 23.0%. The brimonidine/timolol fixed combination showed to be statistically significant more effective only than brinzolamide/timolol fixed combination (p = 0.001). Setting the α error to 5%, the power of the study is 26%, phi: 0.842. Discussion: In all this cohort of patients the target IOP was successfully achieved. All the fixed combinations used in this study had a very good profile of efficacy. Brimonidine, dorzolamide, bimatoprost and travoprost/timolol fixed combinations statistically significantly reduced the percentage of IOP from baseline (p = 0.001) more than brinzolamide/timolol fixed combination.
Ocular Surface Disease Index in Glaucomatous Patients Treated with Bimatoprost  [PDF]
Italo Giuffrè
Open Journal of Ophthalmology (OJOph) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojoph.2014.42007
Abstract:

Objectives: To compare ocular surface changes induced via glaucoma treatment in patients using fixed combinations of bimatoprost 0.03%/timolol 0.50%, timolol 0.50% or bimatoprost 0.01% eye drops. Methods: This is a prospective, one center, open-label clinical trial. It was performed on 60 glaucoma patients between 01-01-2012 and 12-31-2012. These patients were randomly divided in three subgroups: bimatoprost 0.03%/timolol 0.50% fixed combination, timolol 0.50% and bimatoprost 0.01%. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (O.S.D.I.) was evaluated in all the glaucomatous patients of the three subgroups at basal time and after 6 and 12 months. All the results were statistically evaluated by Student t-test and one-way ANOVA. The results were considered statistically significant if p < 0.05. Results: All of the patients ended the clinical trial. There was no statistical significant difference between patients treated with the bimatoprost 0.03%/timolol 0.50% fixed combination and timolol 0.50% eye drops alone (p = 0.845). Instead, there was a statistically significant difference between bimatoprost 0.01% and bimatoprost 0.03%/timolol 0.50% patients (p = 0.05) and between bimatoprost 0.01% and timolol 0.50% eye drops alone (p = 0.049). Conclusions: This is a clinical trial based not on the hypotonising effect of these drugs but on their tolerability. The drug which showed the best tolerability is bimatoprost 0.01%.

The Economic Crisis of 2008-2009: Governance and Consumer Democracy
Brunelle, Dorval;
Norteamérica , 2011,
Abstract: the article begins with an overview of the causes of the economic and financial crisis that struck in the fall of 2008. it then sets out to show how the failure to give due consideration to collective consumer interests and representation led to a lopsided interpretation of the role control agencies were expected to play. it concludes with the idea that effective political involvement by consumers is an essential safeguard in a democracy and an important factor for softening the impact of economic crises on consumers in the future.
L’économie politique au Canada depuis 2008 : quelques repères
Dorval Brunelle

On the Improvement of Wind Power Predictions Based on Terrain Characteristics and Measurements of the Annual Energy Production  [PDF]

Journal of Flow Control, Measurement & Visualization (JFCMV) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jfcmv.2017.51001
Abstract: The assessment of the production capacity of wind farms is a crucial step in wind farm design processes, where a poor assessment can cause significant economic losses. Data from Canadian wind farms benefiting from national production incentive programs show that wind farms are typically characterized by an overestimation of the production capacity. In this context, a study has been done to provide insight on the origin of the discrepancies between the energy production estimates and the measured energy generation, and to develop a method to reduce these discrepancies. To this end, the WAsP and MS-Micro models have been studied. Besides the wind speed measurements, topography indices have been developed to identify the influence of the various characteristics of the site on the error in the annual energy production (AEP). In addition, roughness classes have been created, including a reference roughness and a roughness complexity. The indices have also allowed establishing correlations and developing equations to evaluate the error based on the site characteristics and the positions of wind turbines on the measured annual energy production. An average reduction of up to 83% on the AEP errors was obtained when the methodology was applied to five wind farms in Canada.
