Abstract: background: photodynamic therapy is a form of treatment in which a photosensitizing substance is applied to tissue and activated by a light source at a specific wavelength, thus selectively destroying cells. new light sources are being evaluated for use in the treatment of actinic keratoses. objectives: to evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy with delta-aminolevulinic acid using a light emitting diode device as a light source in the treatment of actinic keratoses of the face and upper limbs. methods: eighteen patients with actinic keratoses of the face or upper limbs received an application of a 20% delta-aminolevulinic acid cream and were submitted to diode light irradiation at a wavelength of 630 nm. results: a total of 328 actinic keratoses were treated, obtaining complete cure in 210 (64.0%) after 24 weeks. lesions situated on the back of the hands were clinically cured in 49.2% of cases compared to 81.4% in the cases of lesions in other areas. there was no record of any severe adverse effects and patient satisfaction with the results was high. conclusion: photodynamic therapy with a diode light emitting source proved effective and well-tolerated for the treatment of actinic keratoses, with results similar to those reported in the literature with other light sources.

Evolu??o das políticas públicas e programas de controle da asma no Brasil sob a perspectiva dos consensos

Abstract: there is much discussion about effective public policies that allow the proper treatment of asthma, providing care that is comprehensive and centered on asthma patients within their social context. educating health professionals and asthma patients provides better recognition of symptoms and the triggers of asthma exacerbations, as well as disseminating strategies for avoiding such triggers, thereby ensuring better treatment and quality of life for asthma patients. asthma imposes an ever-increasing burden on society, in terms of impaired quality of life, morbidity, and health care costs, making this a very important discussion in the field of public policy.
Impact of Periodontal Diseases on Health-Related Quality of Life of Users of the Brazilian Unified Health System

International Journal of Dentistry , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/150357
Abstract: Objective. This study assessed the impact of periodontal diseases on health-related quality of life of adult users of the Brazilian Unified Health System. Study Design. A cross-sectional study was conducted on an outpatient basis. The sample included 151 adults treated in the Periodontics section at Dental Specialty Centres of Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais, Brazil). The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) measured the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life. Participants were interviewed to obtain self-perception of general and oral health and socioeconomic data, and dental records were consulted to obtain periodontal status data. The values of central tendency of the OHIP-14 were compared with socioeconomic, demographic, and self-reported health predictors using nonparametric tests. The final analysis was performed using multiple linear regressions. Results. The results showed that psychological discomfort and physical disability exhibited a negative impact. The following variables can explain approximately 27% of the impact of oral health conditions on health-related quality of life in this group: periodontal disease, self-perceived oral health, and the need to use or replace dental prosthesis. Conclusion. The need for prosthetic rehabilitation and worse periodontal status are associated with health-related quality of life, which can be predicted by the self-perception of health. 1. Introduction Diseases that affect the teeth are as old as man himself, but epidemiological surveys of oral health conditions began in the 1960s. An experimental study on gingivitis in humans [1] showed that the build-up of bacterial plaque led to the development of gingival inflammation (gingivitis), and its removal eliminated the lesions. These systematic observations have become an important tool for determining the factors that cause disease in individuals with similar characteristics, and these observations have contributed to the prevention and treatment of different diseases. Some common chronic diseases of the oral cavity and their consequences influence an individual’s general and collective well-being. The worldwide prevalence of periodontal disease is 5–20% in the adult population. Periodontitis is the second largest oral health problem, affecting 10–15% of the world’s population [2]. The presence of dental calculus and bleeding tend to be more common in 12-year olds and adolescents. The most severe forms of periodontal disease significantly affect adults (35–44 years old) with a prevalence of 19%. Gum problems in the elderly have a reduced impact at the
Teaching Practice Representations in Higher Education from the Perspective of Students: Contributions for Professor Training  [PDF]
Gildo Volpato, Angela Cristina Di Palma Back
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.715224
Abstract: This article discusses the representations of higher education teaching practice according to the students’ perspective. The sample comprised 393 students and 14 professors of three universities of Santa Catarina State in Brazil that traditionally conferred degrees upon professionals of Law, Civil Engineering and Medicine. Among the theorists brought into the discussion, we can mention Berstein (1990), Bourdieu (1983, 1990), Chauí (2001), and Tardif (2002). Then we present the obtained results by mapping the students’ parameters and value judgments of their positive assessment of professors and teaching practice in order to contribute to future discussion in terms of professors’ training.

Protagonistas e contextos da produ??o tecnológica em Portugal: o caso da inven??o independente
Concei??o,Cristina Palma;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2003,
Abstract: set against the backdrop of some of the questions raised by the theoretical debate on the nature of technological production processes in today?s societies, this article looks at the particular case of independent inventors in portugal. it seeks to understand a whole set of successive choices that they make during the various phases involved in coming up with, and then (when possible) publicising, their inventions. in doing so, it seeks to take account of factors such as socio-professional insertion, familiarity with given networks of social relations and the capacity to access and manipulate information of different kinds. the invention processes observed by the author would appear to result from the conjugation of a variety of issues that are not exclusively technical, but rather are heavily influenced by the contexts in which they occur and especially by the particular resources which their protagonists dispose of at all sorts of levels.
Narratives and Computer: creating worlds and trying realities
Maria Cristina Palma Mungioli
Educa??o : Teoria e Prática , 2005,
Abstract: This paper presents the analysis of some narrative strategies used by students of Elementary School in the elaboration of texts. The texts were produced with the aid of a word and images processor (Microworlds). The analysis’ perspective considers the recent researches on the narrative as way of understanding, representing and creating the reality. Some aspects of computer’s use in the educational environment are also discussed. On this last aspect, someof the transformations concerning the relationship student-student, student-computer, studentteacher and student-knowledge were focused.

Lobo,Cristina; Concei??o,Cristina Palma;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2003,
Abstract: the main purpose of this article is to identify remarriage trends in portugal in the last two decades. knowledge of the extent of this phenomenon, i.e. the number of remarriages as a percentage of the total number of marriages in portugal, helped to identify these trends. a contribution was also made by a set of variables that, on the one hand, allowed the social characterisation of those who remarry to be ascertained and, on the other, allowed their different conjugal paths after divorce to be described. this involved such variables as age, education, occupation, marital status before remarriage, the length of the first marriage, cohabitation, and the children of the new and earlier marriages.
