Abstract: background: obesity is a chronic and multifactorial disease, associated with increased cardiovascular risk, especially diastolic heart failure. objective: to evaluate left ventricular diastolic function in morbidly obese patients in the pre-operative for bariatric surgery, correlating it with cardiovascular risk factors and heart structure. methods: this is a cross-sectional study with 132 patients eligible for bariatric surgery submitted to transthoracic echocardiography assessment and of cardiovascular risk factors, as follows: 97 women (73.5%), mean age 38.5 ± 10.5 years and bmi of 43.7 ± 7.2 kg / m2. patients were divided into three groups: 61 with normal diastolic function, 24 with mild diastolic dysfunction and 47 with moderate/severe diastolic dysfunction, of which 41 with moderate diastolic dysfunction (pseudonormal pattern) and six with severe diastolic dysfunction (restrictive pattern). results: hypertension, age and gender were different in the groups with diastolic dysfunction. groups with dysfunction had higher left atrial diameter, left ventricular diameter, left atrial volume in four and two chambers, left atrial volume index and left ventricular mass index corrected for body surface area and height. conclusion: the high frequency of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in the preclinical phase in morbidly obese patients justifies the need for careful echocardiographic assessment, aiming at identifying individuals at higher risk, so that early intervention measures can be carried out.

Development and calibration of an indoor cycling bicycle with load graduation
Renato Sousa da Silva
Revista Brasileira de Cineantropometria e Desempenho Humano , 2006,
Abstract: Indoor Cycling (IC) has considerably grown at fitness centers, due to practitioners giving-up of street cycling because of security issues as well as the trainability and practicity. IC also has the potencial for helping to lose weight and cardiovascular conditioning. There are only few studies on this subject, and the main reason is thelimitation of the Indoor Cycling Bicycle (ICB), which does not either measure workload or power. Therefore, functional evaluation and adequate training prescription are limited and the solution lies on implementation of an ICB with loading system. This paper has the purpose of describing the development and calibration of an ICB that actually measures workload and power. The project was based on the adaptation of a loading system from a Monark mechanical lockwire cycloergometer (basket of weight), which measurement is considered a gold standard, on an ICB. The adaptation, for having maintaining the Monark dimensions of the Flywheel/Crown/Ratchet circuit as well as for using new materials, seems not to offer any type of limitation for prototype construct validity. The ICB also had a low cost. Therefore, this ICB can be classified as a cycloergometer. The adaptation permited to advance in this area, by both maintaining orignal ICB characteristics and also controlling for workload and power.
A Reference Model for the Analysis and Comparison of MDE Approaches for Web-Application Development  [PDF]
Jo?o de Sousa Saraiva, Alberto Rodrigues da Silva
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2010.35047
Abstract: The emerging Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) paradigm advocates the use of models as first-class citizens in the software development process, while artifacts such as documentation and source-code can be quickly produced from those models by using automated transformations. Even though many MDE-oriented approaches, languages and tools have been developed in the recent past, there is no standard that concretely defines a specific sequence of steps to obtain a functional software system from a model. Thus, the existing approaches present numerous differences among themselves, because each one handles the problems inherent to software development in its own way. This paper presents and discusses a reference model for the comparative study of current MDE approaches in the scope of web-application development. This reference model focuses on relevant aspects such as modeling language scope (domain, business-logic, user-interface), usage of patterns, separation of concerns, model transformations, tool support, and deployment details like web-platform independence and traditional programming required. The ultimate goal of this paper is to determine the aspects that will be of greater importance in future web-oriented MDE languages.

Engineering (ENG) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2012.411104
Abstract: The solvent extraction process combined with tools of experimental design assists in developing procedures for separation and purification of elements or mineral compounds with high purity. In this work the technique was used to replace the traditional methods for the collection of basic information required for the development of a circuit of solvent extraction. According to the literature, several factors may influence the extraction of divalent metals by D2EHPA in sulfate media, among which the concentration of metals in solution. The objective was to study the variables affecting the separation process Mn/Ni/Co/Cu, such as the aqueous/organic (A/O), contact time, concentrations of the divalent metals in sulfuric medium, pH and solvent concentration. An investigation into the variables that control the process was done using a “cube + star” experimental design, with central point. The results demonstrate it is possible to obtain of a satisfactory mathematical model that describes the process.

Abstract: The goal of this study was to analyze the territorial distribution and describe the characteristics of undergraduate courses in Physical Therapy in Brazil. Data collection was performed using the virtual system of the Ministry of Education (emec.mec.gov.br) where we sought the following information: name of the institution, state, course load, note the National Examination Performance Students (NEPS), course concept (CC) and other relevant information (steps, extinction, among others). They found 601 Physical Therapy courses. The results show that there is a higher concentration of Physical Therapy courses in the Southeast, the workload and payment time cater to Resolution No. 4 of 6 April 2009 the Ministry of Education (MEC) and also that most courses have satisfactory grades in evaluation of MEC. It is noteworthy that most of the courses are still without concept, like, have an insufficient sample in NEPS or do not complete the evaluation cycle of the National Assessment System of Higher Education in Brazil.
