Stellate Cells from Rat Pancreas Are Stem Cells and Can Contribute to Liver Regeneration
Claus Kordes, Iris Sawitza, Silke G?tze, Dieter H?ussinger
PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0051878
Abstract: The identity of pancreatic stem/progenitor cells is still under discussion. They were suggested to derive from the pancreatic ductal epithelium and/or islets. Here we report that rat pancreatic stellate cells (PSC), which are thought to contribute to pancreatic fibrosis, have stem cell characteristics. PSC reside in islets and between acini and display a gene expression pattern similar to umbilical cord blood stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Cytokine treatment of isolated PSC induced the expression of typical hepatocyte markers. The PSC-derived hepatocyte-like cells expressed endodermal proteins such as bile salt export pump along with the mesodermal protein vimentin. The transplantation of culture-activated PSC from enhanced green fluorescent protein-expressing rats into wild type rats after partial hepatectomy in the presence of 2-acetylaminofluorene revealed that PSC were able to reconstitute large areas of the host liver through differentiation into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. This developmental fate of transplanted PSC was confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization of chromosome Y after gender-mismatched transplantation of male PSC into female rats. Transplanted PSC displayed long-lasting survival, whereas muscle fibroblasts were unable to integrate into the host liver. The differentiation potential of PSC was further verified by the transplantation of clonally expanded PSC. PSC clones maintained the expression of stellate cell and stem cell markers and preserved their differentiation potential, which indicated self-renewal potential of PSC. These findings demonstrate that PSC have stem cell characteristics and can contribute to the regeneration of injured organs through differentiation across tissue boundaries.

Iris Holzer, Rainer Lehner
Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2013.37093
Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the management process and the guidelines for management of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony at the General Hospital Vienna, Medical University Vienna. Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out on all 24 cases of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony with an estimated blood loss of more than 800 mL, in which standardized guidelines were obtained. We included all women who gave birth at the General Hospital of Vienna, the Medical University Vienna, during the period from January 1st 2003 and December 31st 2009 and who suffered blood loss 800 mL at minimum due to uterine atony. Results: The guidelines were in use for 14% - 71%. The average blood loss of the 24 cases with uterine atony was 1342 mL. Conclusion: The management process of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony deviates from the hospital’s guidelines in many cases.

Molecular Pathology of Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer  [PDF]
Justin I. Odegaard, Iris Schrijver
Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2013.42070
Abstract:

Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer is a rare, autosomal dominant hereditary cancer syndrome associated with germline mutations in CDH1 in which 60% - 80% of affected individuals develop advanced diffuse gastric cancer, many as young adults. At clinical presentation, ~90% of these malignancies represent advanced, surgically incurable disease. As such, presymptomatic identification of germline CDH1 mutation carriers followed by early prophylactic total gastrictomy is the sole effective management strategy available. DNA sequence analysis of the CDH1 gene to identify the affected germline allele is the diagnostic standard of care; however, CDH1s relatively high frequency of polymorphisms and the limited amount of experience available regarding them dictate that many identified variants are, as yet, of unknown clinical significance. Given the dramatic consequences of inappropriately offered or withheld treatment, careful clinical selection of at-risk individuals is critical. To facilitate this, multiple groups have published screening criteria recommendations, and while there is disagreement regarding the optimal diagnostic approach, the most widely-used overlap to a considerable degree.

Crisis as opportunity: International health work during the economic depression
Borowy,Iris;
Dynamis , 2008, DOI: 10.4321/S0211-95362008000100002
Abstract: the economic depression of the 1930s represented the most important economic and social crisis of its time. surprisingly, its effect on health did not show in available morbidity and mortality rates. in 1932, the league of nations health organisation embarked on a six-point program addressing statistical methods of measuring the effect and its influence on mental health and nutrition and establishing ways to safeguard public health through more efficient health systems. some of these studies resulted in considerations of general relevance beyond crisis management. unexpectedly, the crisis offered an opportunity to reconsider key concepts of individual and public health.
MICOBIOTA LIQUENIZADA DEL PARQUE KATALAPI, X REGION, CHILE
Pereira,Iris;
Gayana. Botánica , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-66432007000200004
Abstract: in this work, the results of the mycobiota lichenized of katalapi park, x region (región de los lagos), chile, are presented, with the purpose to give information that contribute to future ecological studies. five sampling sites were established in the park, covering the main diversity of available substrates: bark of trunks and branches of trees and shrubs, mosses, soil, rocks, some of them subemerged. others substrates corresponded to bark fruit and ornamental trees. up to now 45 species were revealed: 18 (40 %) of these corresponded to cyanolichens. the remaining 60 % to chlorolichens. distribution into the park, habit, habitat and their photobiont are given for each taxon. three news records of lichens for chile are informed: erioderma glaucescens (taylor) c.w.dodge, physconia grisea (lam.) poelt, sticta caliginosa d.j.galloway and the distribution of pannaria conoplea (ach.) bory is ampled. photographs of the species more frequent are presented.

Abstract: this paper explores the geopolitical dimensions of toponymy as registered in cartographic documents dating from the reforms pushed through by the consulate of marquis of pombal in the mid 18th century to the early decades of the 19th century, as the post-colonial imperial state established itself.
Myth, Utopia, and Political Action
Iris Mendel
Human Affairs , 2007, DOI: 10.2478/v10023-007-0018-5
Abstract: Starting from the premise that some form of "reality transcendence", i.e. the ability to imagine a different reality and reach out for the (un)thinkable, is necessary for political action, the aim of this paper is to analyse the concepts of myth and utopia elaborated by Georges Sorel and Karl Mannheim and to examine their possible contributions to a theory of political action and social change. By comparing the role the authors assign to rationality and irrationality in human affairs, methodological and conceptual differences between Sorel's and Mannheim's approaches to the political are illustrated. It turns out that due to its immunity to critique Sorel's concept of the social myth is highly problematic. Mannheim's concept of utopia, on the other hand, culminates in a technocratic understanding of the political. Though both approaches emphasise the collective dimension of political action, they ultimately exhibit elitist understandings of the political.
Prospects for the search for Higgs bosons with vector boson fusion processes at the LHC
Rottlaender, Iris
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007,
Abstract: The search for the Higgs boson is one of the main physics goals of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its two multi-purpose experiments, ATLAS and CMS. Vector boson fusion is the second largest production process for a standard model Higgs boson at the LHC and offers excellent means for background suppression. This paper gives an overview of the prospects of Higgs boson searches using vector boson fusion at the LHC. For a standard model Higgs boson, the decay channels H->tautau, H->WW and H->gammagamma are discussed. The discovery potential in the framework of the MSSM is summarized.

Abstract: Projektbezogenes Arbeiten ist heute wissenschaftlicher Alltag. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0801179 Today, project-oriented work is an integral part of academic life. However, not all academics are ready to cope with this organizational aspect of scientific work or with the management of research teams. "Guidelines for Interdisciplinary Research Teams" provides a detailed outline of the various project stages, the potential conflicts and burgeoning power issues, as well as the basics and techniques of moderation. This volume offers excellent insight into the scientific enterprise and provides useful strategic options for managing teamwork. Thus, the volume is suitable for two purposes, namely as a set of guidelines for those inexperienced in scientific cooperation, and as a reference book for those who want to master their previous project experiences and utilize them in future enterprises. However, the intercultural aspect of scientific project organization is not discussed in the volume.
