Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Piper ovatum Vahl by hydrodistillation was analyzed by GC–MS. The main constituents found were δ-amorphene (16.5 %), cis-muurola-4(14),5-diene (14.29 %) and γ-muurolene (13.26%). The crude extracts and isolated compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activity. Hydroalcoholic extracts of different parts of Piper ovatum Vahl, essential oil and amides isolated from leaves were tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and Candida species. All extracts and amides were active against Bacillus subtilis and Candida tropicalis, including clinical strains. Essential oil was active against C. tropicalis. These amides showed an inhibitory effect on the adherence of C. tropicalis ATCC 28707 on cover glasses at 10 μg/mL, but did not show morphological alterations at the tested concentrations. Amides were identified as piperovatine and piperlonguminine, and showed MIC values of 15.6 and 31.2 μg/mL to B. subtilis and 3.9 μg/mL to C. tropicalis, and low toxic effects to Vero cells and macrophages.

Revista Brasileira de Medicina de Família e Comunidade , 2010, DOI: 10.5712/rbmfc3(11)337
Abstract: This article is a version of the original document published in 2005 under the same title by the Brazilian Society of Family and Community Medicine (BSFCM) (full text available at ), adapted for this supplement of the Revista Brasileira de Medicina de Família e Comunidade. The text defines Family and Community Medicine (FCM) as a medical specialty focused on biopsychosocial integrality an on Primary Care as privileged scenario, in distinct opposition to the medical specialties. The health policies historically adopted in Brazil used to give priority to a hospital-centered care model, hampering the strengthening of Primary Care and Family and Community Medicine. This trend however is changing due to the implementation of the Family Health Strategy and the international experience in this area. In this context, the BSFCM in cooperation with the Ministry of Health are encouraging the expansion of the Family and Community Medicine Residency Programs. Considering the importance of expanding the residency programs without loosing quality, the BSFCM elaborated a document presenting a set of criteria and recommendations in accordance with the guidelines of the National Commission of Medical Residency, the organism regulating these programs, to be used as a basis. In this article we recover the requirements nd recommendations for the organization of the program, the chronogram of activities and the basic competences to be developed during the program. Furthermore we reanalyze the requisites in terms of infrastructure and service flow necessary for creating a practice environment favorable for in-service training.We finalize with a brief report about the most recent actions of the BSFCM for minimizing the current gap between offer and demand of preceptors specialized in Family and Community Medicine.

Acta Scientiarum : Health Sciences , 2005,
The presence of some species of Candida was analyzed in saliva of individuals with: 1) prostheses and lesions; 2) with prostheses without lesions; 3) without prostheses and without lesions, relating with the capacity for biofilm production in Sabouraud dextrosebroth medium with 8% of glucose determinate by spectrophotometric method. A total of 92 yeasts were isolated from the 220 patients: 24 (group 1), 24 (group 2) and 44 (group 3). C. albicans was isolated in 70% of the cases and C. non albicans in 30%. The most frequent biofilm production (64%) was showed by C. non albicans yeasts and the patient groups who presented greater percent in biofilm production was 1, 2 and 3 corresponding to 75, 63 e 57% respectively. These data support that biofilm production may be associated with infectious process caused by Candida species.

Abstract: among the nutrients required by the banana tree, the potassium (k) is what most influences the production of the crop. this study aimed to compare the effects of two k sources, potassium chloride (kcl) and potassium sulfate (k2so4) on production, and estimate the dose of k for maximum physical efficiency (mpe) and maximum economic efficiency (mee), besides determine the critical levels of leaf k for the banana tree, cultivar prata an? (aab) irrigated, cultivated in the semi-arid region of northern minas gerais state, brazil. the experiment was conducted in an oxisol, medium texture. the treatments were derived from the factorial (4 x 2), being four rates of k (0, 400, 800 and 1200 kg ha-1 yr-1 of k2o) and two k sources (kcl and k2so4), resulting in eight treatments. these were distributed in randomized blocks with four replications. there were no differences among the effects of kcl and k2so4 on the production of banana. the kcl showed greater economic viability to be used as a source of k. the estimated doses for mpe of banana in the 2nd and 3rd production cycles using the kcl were 827 and 835 kg ha-1 yr-1 of k2o, respectively, while for mee, doses were 157 and 670 kg ha-1 yr-1 of k2o, respectively. the critical levels of leaf k obtained in the 2nd and 3rd production cycles were 2.85 dag kg-1 for the mpe and for mee, the values were 2.41 and 2.80 dag kg-1, respectively.
A Reference Model for the Analysis and Comparison of MDE Approaches for Web-Application Development  [PDF]

Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2010.35047
Abstract: The emerging Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) paradigm advocates the use of models as first-class citizens in the software development process, while artifacts such as documentation and source-code can be quickly produced from those models by using automated transformations. Even though many MDE-oriented approaches, languages and tools have been developed in the recent past, there is no standard that concretely defines a specific sequence of steps to obtain a functional software system from a model. Thus, the existing approaches present numerous differences among themselves, because each one handles the problems inherent to software development in its own way. This paper presents and discusses a reference model for the comparative study of current MDE approaches in the scope of web-application development. This reference model focuses on relevant aspects such as modeling language scope (domain, business-logic, user-interface), usage of patterns, separation of concerns, model transformations, tool support, and deployment details like web-platform independence and traditional programming required. The ultimate goal of this paper is to determine the aspects that will be of greater importance in future web-oriented MDE languages.

Oliveira, Inez Vilar de Morais;Costa, Raquel Silva;Andrade, Renata Aparecida de;Martins, Antonio Baldo Geraldo;
Revista Brasileira de Fruticultura , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-29452005000100045
Abstract: with the objective to evaluate the percentage of seedlings emergence and the emergence velocity index (evi) of longan (dimocarpos longan lour) seeds, was carried out the present research, using plants that came from the germplasm bank of the department of vegetable production of the faculdade de ciências agrárias e veterinárias - unesp - campus of jaboticabal, s?o paulo state, brazil. immediately after the extraction, the seeds were washed, dryed and sowed in sand seed beds. the experimental delineation was entirely randomized, with three treatments, characterized by the size of the seeds: big, medium and small, determined by the medium weight of 50 seeds (in grams), being: 89; 80 and 65g respectively. the values of percentage of emergence were transformed in arc-sen square root (x / 100). the averages were compared by the test of tukey, with 5% of probability. it was not observed significantly difference to the evaluated parameters, being obtained the values of the percentage of emergence of 97 to 91% and evi of 0,651 to 0,680, showing that the size of the seed is not a factor to be considered for this specie.
