The Higher Education System in Argentina. Networks, Genealogies and Conflicts  [PDF]
Santos Sharpe Andrés
Creative Education (CE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2015.618200
Abstract: The present manuscript aims to identify the genealogies, understood in a Foucaultian perspective, which leads to the actual Higher Education System in Argentina, by distinguishing how series of events are organized, distributed, organized in terms of institutional relations, signifying chains in the social amalgam and educational networks. This analysis will allow understanding the hierarchical relationships between higher education institutions and how the differences on cultural and curricular traditions and history also motivate (though not impose) the differences on the students and on policies. Finally, it is as well an accurate description of the Higher Education System in Argentina with a strong emphasis on universities.
A Comparative Study on the Engine Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Biodiesel from Various Vegetable Oils and Animal Fat  [PDF]
Bjorn S. Santos, Sergio C. Capareda
Journal of Sustainable Bioenergy Systems (JSBS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jsbs.2015.53009
Abstract: The potential of biodiesel fuels from various vegetable oil sources such as sunflower (SFME), safflower (SAFME), peanut (PME) and canola (CME) as well as from low-cost chicken fat (CFME) to supplement increasing biodiesel demands must be evaluated in terms of the corresponding engine performance and exhaust emissions. In this study, two diesel engines rated at 14.2 kW (small) and 60 kW (large) were operated by using the different biodiesel fuels and a reference diesel. Results showed that both the small and large engines delivered similar power when using biodiesel fuels in the expense of higher brake-specific fuel consumptions (BSFC). Higher exhaust concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) while lower carbon dioxide (CO) and negligible sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions were observed in both engines. Total hydrocarbon emissions (THC) were higher in both engines when using SME, SFME and CME but comparable when using CFME, SAFME and PME in the large engine. Thus, with the increasing demand for biodiesel, alternative feedstock sources such as those used in this study may be utilized to take advantage of their availability, renewability and environmental benefits.
What do we know about reaction mechanism? the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry approach
Santos, Leonardo S.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532011001000002
Abstract: man's fascination with chemical reactions goes back to ancient times. with the introduction of spectroscopic techniques, the art of exploiting reactions became an intriguing science. it is, therefore, not surprising that one of the most flourishing and rewarding frontiers in modern chemistry is the study of reaction mechanisms in chemical and biological processes. as man's imagination does not stop at the frontiers defined by nature, and with the ever increasing power of catalysis, the synthetic organic chemist is poised to make important contributions by inventing and developing new enabling technologies for the generation of new catalysts and methodologies. in this account is offered a new tool for accelerating the development through electrospray ionization-mass spectrometric (esi-ms) monitoring in new reaction discovering.
Doen?as cr?nicas n?o transmissíveis: desempenho no cuidado médico em aten??o primária à saúde no sul do Brasil
Capilheira, Marcelo;Santos, Iná S.;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2011000600011
Abstract: a cross-sectional study was performed to assess knowledge and performance on the prevention of risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases (cncd) in adults, among primary care physicians in the urban health system in pelotas, rio grande do sul state, brazil. the study included observation of 422 consultations by 61 physicians. 58.8% of the patient consultations for cncd and 25.3% of those for other reasons lacked any preventive recommendations and/or measurement of weight, height, and blood pressure. for patients with cncd, the most frequent recommendations were weight loss, more physical activity, and reduced fat and salt intake. among patients without cncd, only 39.1% received any recommendations related to primary prevention. physician performance for the prevention of cncd was poor, and focused mainly on tertiary prevention (counseling patients who were already diagnosed with cncd) as compared to primary prevention (preventing the incidence of cncd).
Species of Anisepyris Kieffer, 1905 (Hymenoptera, Bethylidae) collected in Cachoeira da Fuma?a and Forno Grande State Parks, Espírito Santo, Brazil
Santos, Hélio Sá;
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262002000300003
Abstract: six species of anisepyris kieffer, 1905 were collected in cachoeira da fuma?a (alegre) and forno grande (castelo) state parks. two of them are already known: anisepyris lobatus santos & azevedo, 2000 and anisepyris rectus santos & azevedo, 2000. other four are described as new: anisepyris attenuatus sp. nov., anisepyris divisus sp. nov., anisepyris inconspicuus sp. nov., and a. rotundus sp. nov.; each new species is illustrated. two uncommon characters for anisepyris, such as an inconspicuous anterior carina of the pronotum, and a lower mesopleural fovea partially open on the lower margin were observed being both the characters found in a. inconspicuus sp. nov. and only the first character in a. attenuatus sp. nov.
Os museus Brasileiros e a constitui??o do imaginário nacional
Santos, Myriam S.;
Sociedade e Estado , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69922000000200005
Abstract: this article examines the construction of origin myths existing in the brazilian museums, especially in the national museum, and its relation with imaginary collectives that are constituted about brazil during the empire. it analyzes the brazilian museums of nineteen century, its relation with the european museums of the same time, as well as inherent elements to the brazilian society. it tries demonstrate, the narratives formation in which classical traditions interlace with a romantic vision of the local nature; the emphasis in nature as source of scientific knowledge and, finally, a negligence for passed traditions and a valorization of the narratives guided for future achievements. the maintenance of the devaluation of the past contributes for the legitimation difficulty of the museums that come backed for the preservation of cultural traditions.

Dipolar gases in quasi one-dimensional geometries
S. Sinha,L. Santos
Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.99.140406
Abstract: We analyze the physics of cold dipolar gases in quasi one-dimensional geometries, showing that the confinement-induced scattering resonances produced by the transversal trapping are crucially affected by the dipole-dipole interaction. As a consequence, the dipolar interaction may drastically change the properties of quasi-1D dipolar condensates, even for situations in which the dipolar interaction would be completely overwhelmed by the short-range interactions in a 3D environment.
