Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0482-50042004000500001
Abstract: objective: to determine whether the allotypes of complement proteins factor b (bf), c2, c4a and c4b could be markers of rheumatic heart disease (rhd) in the brazilian population. methods: forty-nine patients with chronic rhd were studied. the controls included 65 healthy individuals, matched with the patients according to sex, age and ethnical background. bf, c2, c4a and c4b allotypes were studied by standard techniques including western blots for c2 and c4 variants with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. results: this study showed a significantly elevated frequency of the rare c4a6 allotype (p=0.03 rr=11.85) and a decrease of c4a3 in the patients when compared to controls. in addition, c4 null and bf and c4 rare allotypes were more frequent in patients than in controls. conclusions: considering that only rhd patients were included, further investigations are necessary in order to clarify whether c4a6 may be a marker of the cardiac form or of the disease itself.

Abstract:

After 4K, 8K UHD resolution can be considered the new challenge for film, visualization and television. Due to the dimension of 8K image, the remote micro and macro images are considered appropriate for visualization with scientific and educational purposes. This article describes the implementation of the 8K video plug-in to play UHD videos into the SAGE, a collaborative environment for the advancement of scientific research and education developed by EVL (Electronic Visualization Laboratory), upgrading its current resolution for video playing. It also presents the challenges of producing 8K content, the development of the code and introduces the features to view 8K ultra high definition videos in multiple tiles through the use of low cost computer clusters. The SAGE 8K video plug-in implementation was made possible because of the previous development of the Fogo Player, a system to run 4K and 8K content. The results were successfully presented at the CineGrid International Workshop 2013 in San Diego.

Case Reports in Dentistry , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/741548
Abstract: A case of adult rhabdomyoma is reported. The lesion is a rare benign tumor of skeletal muscle origin which occurs predominantly in the head and neck region. In the present case, the clinical diagnosis favored a benign salivary gland tumor. Histologically, the tumor was composed of large round, oval, and polygonal cells of varying size with abundant pale, eosinophilic, fine, granular cytoplasm with peripherally located nuclei. Immunohistochemically, the lesion was positive for muscle-specific actin, smooth muscle actin, desmin, S100 protein, and Masson’s trichrome. Electron microscopic examination confirmed the presence of numerous myofibrils. The lesion was treated by surgical resection. The clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features are discussed in this study. 1. Introduction Rhabdomyomas are rare benign tumors derived from striated muscle, and can be classified generally into two types: cardiac type and extracardiac type. Cardiac rhabdomyoma occurs almost exclusively in the pediatric age group and may be associated with tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, and sebaceous adenomas. Current opinion is that the cardiac type represents a hamartomatous growth [1]. Extracardiac rhabdomyoma can be divided into three groups (adult, fetal, and genital types) with regards to clinical and morphological differences. The adult type is characterized by a slowly growing mass typically seen in the head and neck of elderly patients. In the fetal type, the lesion also typically involves the head and neck region and tends to occur at younger ages. The genital type is almost always found in the vulvovaginal region of middle-aged women [2]. The fetal and vaginal types are morphologically similar [3]. Seventy-seven percent of all extracardiac rhabdomyomas occur in the head and neck and 14% in the genital region [4]. The adult rhabdomyoma is the most common form of extracardiac rhabdomyoma. The tumor arises mainly within the head and neck region where it is believed to originate from the skeletal musculature of the third and fourth branchial arches. It is so called because of the histological resemblance to mature skeletal muscle cells [5]. These tumors are usually solitary; however, several authors have reported cases of adult multifocal extracardiac rhabdomyomas [6, 7]. In this paper we report a rare case of an adult rhabdomyoma originating in the floor of the mouth. 2. Case Report The patient, a 40-year-old white woman, came to dentistry complaining of a painless swelling in the left floor of mouth that had been present for 6 months. The

Abstract: The regulation of the inflammatory response is essential to maintaining homeostasis. Several studies have investigated new drugs that may contribute to avoiding or minimizing excessive inflammatory process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of extracts of green algae Caulerpa mexicana on models inflammation. In mice, the inflammatory peritonitis model is induced by zymosan. Previous treatment of mice with aqueous and methanolic extracts of C. mexicana was able to suppress the cell migration to the peritoneal cavity, in a time-dependent but not in a dose-dependent manner. The treatment of mice with C. mexicana extracts also decreased the xylene-induced ear edema, exerting strong inhibitory leukocyte migration elicited by zymosan into the air pouch. We concluded that administration of the extracts resulted in a reduction of cell migration to different sites as well as a decrease in edema formation induced by chemical irritants. This study demonstrates for the first time the anti-inflammatory effect of aqueous and methanolic extracts from the green marine algae Caulerpa mexicana.
Produzindo corpo, doen?a e tratamento no ambulatório: apresenta??o de casos e registro em prontuário

Abstract: the article analyzes two types of practice involved in medical training - case presentations and the annotation of consultations in medical records - that play a fundamental role in divesting patients of their personal qualities and reconstituting them as an objective body, a set of organs, the site of a lesion and the object of intervention. the ethnographic material presented here is the result of observing case presentations made by students to their tutors in a cardiology outpatient clinic at the university hospital of ufba. the article highlights the role of scientific and technological conceptions in this process. it also shows that both the case presentations to tutors (a descriptive and performative type of speech) and the written notes in medical records (a training practice that both shapes speech and reflects it, thereby authorizing the student) are procedures for objectifying the patient that depend on interpretation, although this takes place in surreptitious form.

Gon?alves, Iara;Linhares, Marcelo;Bordin, Jose;Matos, Delcio;
Arquivos de Gastroenterologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-28032009000300009
Abstract: context: identification of risk factors for requiring transfusions during surgery for colorectal cancer may lead to preventive actions or alternative measures, towards decreasing the use of blood components in these procedures, and also rationalization of resources use in hemotherapy services. this was a retrospective case-control study using data from 383 patients who were treated surgically for colorectal adenocarcinoma at "funda??o pio xii", in barretos-sp, brazil, between 1999 and 2003. objective: to recognize significant risk factors for requiring intraoperative blood transfusion in colorectal cancer surgical procedures. methods: univariate analyses were performed using fisher's exact test or the chi-squared test for dichotomous variables and student's t test for continuous variables, followed by multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression. results: in the univariate analyses, height (p = 0.06), glycemia (p = 0.05), previous abdominal or pelvic surgery (p = 0.031), abdominoperineal surgery (p<0,001), extended surgery (p<0.001) and intervention with radical intent (p<0.001) were considered significant. in the multivariate analysis using logistic regression, intervention with radical intent (or = 10.249, p<0.001, 95% ci = 3.071-34.212) and abdominoperineal amputation (or = 3.096, p = 0.04, 95% ci = 1.445-6.623) were considered to be independently significant. conclusion: this investigation allows the conclusion that radical intervention and the abdominoperineal procedure in the surgical treatment of colorectal adenocarcinoma are risk factors for requiring intraoperative blood transfusion.

Engenharia Ambiental : Pesquisa e Tecnologia , 2011,
Abstract: We tested different substrates, in order to verify that provide better conditions for germination, seedling emergence and the vegetative development of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.). We evaluated 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing, the percentage of seedling emergence (G) and the speed of germination of seedlings (GSI) and the growth of seedling. The statistical design was randomized blocks with six substrates (sand), (soil), (sand + soil), (soil + cattle manure), (sand +cattle manure) and (sand + soil + cattle manure). Evaluations were made of seed emergence and speed of germination of seedlings. There were significant differences in percentages among treatments in the emergency period. Substrates composed of sand, soil and manure had the highest rates of emergence and emergence speed index. Regarding the development of the root system of Canavalia ensiformis (Jack bean), it was found that the substrate with the soil, all plants had the highest values in terms of length. The height growth of Canavalia ensiformis was influenced by the different substrates analyzed. Among the substrates, the better the (sand + soil + cattle manure), which increased the growth of seedlings.
Estratégia de desenvolvimento e combate à pobreza
Albuquerque, Roberto Cavalcanti de;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141995000200004
Abstract: the paper initially considers development a global process (at the same time an economic, social and political phenomenon) and discusses its implications for the modernization paths adopted by the less-advanced countries. this the basis for the proposition of public intervention models aimed at overcoming poverty situations, viewed as the major development challenge of these nations. the models proposed were conceived on the bases of detailed analyses of three different poverty situations in brazil: the rural northeast (an underdeveloped, or low-income area); the metropolitan southeast (an upper middle-income area); and the urban northeast (a lower middle-income area). nonetheless, they intend to have more widespread validity as frameworks from which specific antipoverty programs may be conceived and implemented, as a part of development strategies. the models' nucleus is integrated by three basic variables and their correspondent strategic actions. the first one is growth and involves the mechanisms through which the poor can benefit from it are analyzed. the second is knowledge, embodied in human capital, which commands an effort of basic education and job-training aimed at the poor. the third is labor, a link-variable between growth and knowledge that provides the productive insertion and social self-promotion of the poor. the models include some complementary actions. they involve essentially social public policies targeted to the poor; family planning; the more intensive use of labor as a means to supplement income; assistance to the more vulnerable poor; and the extension of citizenship, provided mainly by the presence of the state in poverty concentration areas.
Cotidiano, media??o pedagógica e forma??o de conceitos: uma contribui??o de Vygotsky ao ensino de geografia
Cavalcanti, Lana de Souza;
Cadernos CEDES , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-32622005000200004
Abstract: this paper synthesizes the theory on the development of the higher mental processes by vygotsky. it highlights some of its concepts, as internalization, semiotic mediation, zone of proximal development, daily and scientific concepts, which are quite instrumentally helpful to analyze the educational processes and their relationship to the development of the psychological processes. after this synthesis of vygotsky's thought, it seeks to specify possible contributions of that theory to geography teaching, particularly to the formation of geographical concepts.
