Cancer resource center of the desert patient navigator program: removing financial barriers to access to cancer care for rural Latinos

SpringerPlus , 2013, DOI: 10.1186/2193-1801-2-15
Abstract: Financial concerns are a significant thread that runs throughout the diagnostic, treatment, and post treatment journey of cancer patients. The complicated nature of patients’ circumstances and medical systems often hinders the patients going through the insurance conversion process. PNP plays a critical role in bridging the gap between patients and medical systems thus promoting cancer treatment access for this vulnerable population.

Apuntes de Investigación del CECYP , 2008,
Abstract: This article proposes an explanation of the centrality of love in the poetic structure of tango and samba based on the modernization of the cities of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro in the 1920’s. Through the analysis of lyrics from both genres, and a survey of Argentine and Brazilian historiographies of popular music, this article lays out a transnational perspective about the making of urban popular cultures of the early Twentieth Century, and also provides a reflection on music as an historiographic object.

A comparison between two logical formalisms for rewriting
Miguel Palomino
Computer Science , 2006,
Abstract: Meseguer's rewriting logic and the rewriting logic CRWL are two well-known approaches to rewriting as logical deduction that, despite some clear similarities, were designed with different objectives. Here we study the relationships between them, both at a syntactic and at a semantic level. Even though it is not possible to establish an entailment system map between them, both can be naturally simulated in each other. Semantically, there is no embedding between the corresponding institutions. Along the way, the notions of entailment and satisfaction in Meseguer's rewriting logic are generalized. We also use the syntactic results to prove reflective properties of CRWL.

Objective: To analyze the clinical indications for use, morbidity and mortality associated with a non-permanent transvenous pacemaker. Design: Prospective and observational study. Setting: Cardiac intensive care unit. Method: One hundred and eighty-two patients with non-permanent pacemakers implanted consecutively over a period of four years. Data collected: Main variables of interest were demographic data, clinical indications, access route, length of stay and complications. Results: A total of 63% were men, with a median age of 78±9.5 years and with symptomatic third-degree atrioventricular block in 76.9% of the cases. Femoral vein access was preferred in 92.3% of the cases. Complications appeared in 40.11% of the patients, the most frequent being hematoma at the site of vascular access (13.19%). Restlessness wa
Corrosion Performance of Conversion Treatments for Electrogalvanised Steel Sheet  [PDF]

Abstract: Chromate conversion treatments have been widely used due to their excellent corrosion resistance properties; however, their use is increasingly restricted because of the highly toxic chromic acid solutions required, with consequent effluent disposal and ecological problems. The removal of these toxic chemicals is considered a priority within most of the developed countries. In this work, the corrosion resistance of different alternative pretreatments applied on electrogalvanised steel sheet: 1) Cr(III) and Zr complexes layer, 2) Ce(III) layer, 3) Ce(III)/Ce(IV) double layer, 4) Cr(VI) chromating was investigated, and its results compared with those from the tests performed using bare electrogalvanized steel sheets as a substrate. These samples were exposed to aerated 0.05 mol/L NaCl or 0.1 mol/L Na2SO4 solutions. The electrochemical behavior of samples was studied by electrochemical techniques. For three days of immersion in the solution test, the experimental results have shown that, compared with the Cr(VI) protective properties, the Cr(III) + Zr complex layer presented similar performance. Even though the initial corrosion resistance was offered by the Ce(III) and Ce(VI)/Ce(III) conversion coatings was relatively good, it quickly decreased as a function of the exposure time.

Abstract: intussusception is a common cause of acute abdomen and intestinal obstruction in children between 3 months and 6 years old. we describe a case of a 2-year-old child who went to the emergency department for an episode of headache, vomiting and low reactivity to stimuli. after an initial study to rule out potential causes of altered mental status, an abdominal ultrasound gave the diagnosis of ileo-ileal intussusception. the subsequent resolution was spontaneous. abdominal causes should be excluded in the pediatric age in case of changes in level of consciousness that are unexplained by other conditions. abdominal ultrasound is a noninvasive technique that can help the diagnosis.
