Abstract: Enhancement in coercivity values of precursor powders of cobalt ferrite embedded in silica xerogel as well as polyaniline was observed using vibrating sample magnetometry. We compared the magnetic properties of pure precursor powders of ferrite cobalt prepared by coprecipitation method and those embedded in xerogel and polyaniline matrix, prepared by sol-gel and by a conventional in situ chemical oxidation polymerization, respectively. The main magnetic effect is the altered coercivity value growing two magnitude orders for the precursor powders of cobalt ferrite embedded in silica xerogel and in polyaniline. The value goes from 52 Oe to 2200 Oe and 1054 Oe for pure coprecipitated precursor powder and embedded in silica xerogel, and embedded in polyaniline, respectively, without any heat-treatment.

Abstract: Objective: to analyse the association between rectal bleeding or a family history of colorectal cancer (CRC) and the results obtained in two rounds of a CRC screening pilot programme performed in L'Hospitalet, Barcelona, Spain. Subjects: males and females (50-69 years) were the target population. Together with the invitation letter, they received a questionnaire in which they were askaed about rectal bleeding, family history of CRC and related neoplasms. The screening test was a guaiac-based faecal occult blood test (FOBT), and colonoscopy for positive tests. Results: 25,829 FOBT were performed in 18,405 individuals. Information on rectal bleeding and a family history of CRC were obtained for 9,849 and 9,865 cases, respectively. Male sex (OR = 1.32), 60-69 years of age (OR = 1.48), rectal bleeding (OR = 1.84) and history of CRC (OR = 1.54) were independent predictors of positive FOBT. With regard to colonoscopy, a greater risk of diagnosing advanced neoplasm was observed among men (OR = 2.47) and subjects with a family history of CRC (OR = 1.98). Conclusions: CRC screening programmes must have instruments that make it possible to select the candidate population and the possibility of offering a study suited to the risk of individuals who are not susceptible to population screening by means of FOBT.

Abstract: since the discovery of vitamins, there has been an increasing interest at relating vitamins with particular diseases. in particular, for vitamin a its singular importance has been determined in multiple vital functions, and its relationship with diseases, both in deficit and in excess, is nowadays completely demonstrated. in developed countries, vitamin deficiency-related diseases have been greatly reduced; however, in some patients with particular features they must be kept in mind. this is the case of a 45 year-old man, with a history of chronic alcoholism, non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and cholecystectomy with a high biliary drainage secondary to emphysematous cholecystitis and perivesicular abscess. he complains of bilateral ocular pain, photophobia, and decreased visual acuity besides a history of pasty, sticky and foul-smelling feces. he is admitted in the ophthalmology department and bilateral corneal ulceration is diagnosed. a consultation to the nutrition department is made because of cachexia. severe caloric and mil protein hyponutrition is observed with a bmi of 18.2 and a 23% weight loss for the last 6 months, fat-soluble vitamins (a, d and e) deficit, mild fat malabsorption, and macrocytic and hypochromic anemia. the patient's diet is supplemented with a special hyperproteinic and hypercaloric diet for diabetics, deficient vitamins and pancreatic enzymes to improve absorption are administered, and glycemia is controlled with insulin. four months later, the patient is assessed and has a bmi of 20, anemia has resolved and from an ophthalmologic viewpoint the course is favorable, the ulcers improve and visual acuity is almost completely recovered. in chronic alcoholic patients with a low dietary intake and clinical complications with nutritional repercussions (pancreatitis that produces malabsorption or cholecystectomy with biliary percutaneous drainage) we should not forget that micronutrients deficits may explain the etiology of other associate

Gingival recession is a very often clinic complaint which frecuently cause esthetic problems to our patients or do not aIlow them keeping a good plaque control in these areas which can lead to sensibility or even decay. For their treatment, some techniques of mucogingival surgery have been designed, being the connective tissue free graft, so far, one that offers bigger percentage of success as weIl as greater predictibility. Although have been described some ways to graft the connective tissue to the recipient bed, we wiIl focus our work on the technique described by Langer and Langer in 1985 which, in spite of suffering several changes proposed by different authors, it is still the fundamental basis in the use of this kind of grafts. We show results after five years post surgery.
Procedure for direct measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle $γ$

Abstract: A natural procedure is presented to measure the angle $\gamma$ from the decay $B^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm}\pi^+\pi^-$. It is based in the Dalitz plot fitting analysis. Neither amplitudes nor strong phases have to be known a priori. We present simulations of this decay computing both statistical and theoretical uncertainties and analyze the experimental feasibility. We found that $\gamma$ could be measured with a combined error of the order of 20$^o$ with 90% of CL after about a couple of years of running of the first generation of B factories.

Abstract: RESUMEN. Abstract: Context. We present a photometric and astrometric catalog of 187963 stars located in the field around the old super-metal-rich Galactic open cluster NGC 6253. The total field-of-view covered by the catalog is 34' x 33'. In this field, we provide CCD BVRI photometry. For a smaller region close to the cluster's center, we also provide near-infrared JHK photometry. Aims. We analyze the properties of NGC 6253 by using our new photometric data and astrometric membership. Methods. In June 2004, we targeted the cluster during a 10 day multi-site campaign, which involved the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope with its wide-field imager and the Anglo-Australian 3.9m telescope, equipped with the IRIS2 near-infrared imager. Archival CCD images of NGC 6253 were used to derive relative proper motions and to calculate the cluster membership probabilities. Results. We have refined the cluster's fundamental parameters, deriving (V_0-M_v)=11.15, E(B - V)=0.15, E(V - I)=0.25, E(V - J)=0.50, and E(V - H)=0.55. The color excess ratios obtained using both the optical and near infrared colors indicate a normal reddening law in the direction of NGC 6253. The age of NGC 6253 at 3.5 Gyr, determined from our best-fitting isochrone appears to be slightly older than the previous estimates. Finally, we estimated the binary fraction among the cluster members to be \sim20%-30% and identified 11 blue straggler candidates.
