Bone Mineral Density-Associated Polymorphisms Are Associated with Obesity-Related Traits in Korean Adults in a Sex-Dependent Manner

Abstract: Obesity and osteoporosis share common physiological factors, including the presence of atherosclerosis, a risk factor for cardiometabolic disease, as well as a common progenitor that differentiates into both adipocytes and osteoblasts. Among the 23 polymorphisms associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs), an Osterix polymorphism has been identified and associated with childhood obesity in girls. Therefore, we focused on elucidating polymorphisms associated with adulthood obesity in a sex-dependent manner among the previously published BMD-associated polymorphisms from GWASs. We performed 2 screenings of 18 BMD-associated polymorphisms for obesity-related traits in 2,362 adults aged >20 years. We excluded 13 polymorphisms showing deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium or no association with obesity-related traits (body mass index, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio). Among 5 selected polymorphisms (rs9594738 of RANKL, rs17066364 of NUFIP1, rs7227401 of OSBPL1A, and rs1856057 and rs2982573 of ESR1) analyzed, 2 polymorphisms (rs9594738 and rs17066364) were associated with obesity-related traits. We found sex-dependent associations such that the 4 polymorphisms (excluding rs9594738 of RANKL) were associated with abdominal traits such as WC and waist-to-hip ratio only in men. In addition, when the combined genetic risk score (GRS) for WC increase was calculated with 4 SNPs (rs9594738, rs17066364, rs7227401, and rs1856057) exhibiting similar trends for both sexes, the magnitude of the GRS effect for the WC increase was larger in men than in women (effect size = 0.856 cm, P = 0.0000452 for men; effect size = 0.598 cm, P = 0.00228 for women). In summary, we found 4 polymorphisms, previously related to osteoporosis, to be associated to obesity-related traits in a sex-dependent manner in Korean adults, particularly in men.

Abstract: Over the centuries, people have combined fields, leading to the creation of new domains. For example, artists have used technology to widen the range of their medium to express ideas in new ways. Similarly, technology has leveraged art to expand its range of application. Both art and technology continue to inspire innovation in each other. A contemporary example of this process is evident in interactive art era; this article covers this topic focusing on tangible interface pieces. There have been many compelling demonstrations that involve tangible interaction to increase audience interests through their embodied interaction. However, most existing approaches are limited to engaging a user’s immediate, temporary experience with setting some context of the environment with story elements. This article presents an interactive installation that engages the audience, building an immersive environment based on the synergy between embodied interaction and storytelling in a more active and meaningful way. It is based on the belief that tangible interfaces have the potential to convey narratives more meaningfully based on physical interaction and human senses and fundamentally, aims to supply another potential of tangible interfaces to spark further discussion in this area.
Exact solutions of charged wormhole

Abstract: In this paper, the backreaction to the traversable Lorentzian wormhole spacetime by the scalar field or electric charge is considered to find the exact solutions. The charges play the role of the additional matter to the static wormhole which is already constructed by the exotic matter. The stability conditions for the wormhole with scalar field and electric charge are found from the positiveness and flareness for the wormhole shape function.
Contact Structures on G_2-Manifolds and Spin 7-Manifolds

Abstract: We show that there exist infinitely many pairwise distinct non-closed G_2-manifolds (some of which have holonomy full G_2) such that they admit co-oriented contact structures and have co-oriented contact submanifolds which are also associative. Along the way, we prove that there exists a tubular neighborhood N of every orientable three-submanifold Y of an orientable seven-manifold with spin structure such that for every co-oriented contact structure on Y, N admits a co-oriented contact structure such that Y is a contact submanifold of N. Moreover, we construct infinitely many pairwise distinct non-closed seven-manifolds with spin structures which admit co-oriented contact structures and retract onto co-oriented contact submanifolds of co-dimension four.
Remarks on Hamiltonian Structures in G_2-Geometry

Abstract: In this article, we treat G_2-geometry as a special case of multisymplectic geometry and make a number of remarks regarding Hamiltonian multivector fields and Hamiltonian differential forms on manifolds with an integrable G_2-structure; in particular, we discuss existence and make a number of identifications of the spaces of Hamiltonian structures associated to the two multisymplectic structures associated to an integrable G_2-structure. Along the way, we prove some results in multisymplectic geometry that are generalizations of results from symplectic geometry.
Existence of Compatible Contact Structures on $G_2$-manifolds

Abstract: In this paper, we show the existence of (co-oriented) contact structures on certain classes of $G_2$-manifolds, and that these two structures are compatible in certain ways. Moreover, we prove that any seven-manifold with a spin structure (and so any manifold with $G_2$-structure) admits an almost contact structure. We also construct explicit almost contact metric structures on manifolds with $G_2$-structures.
A Note on Closed G_2-Structures and 3-Manifolds

Abstract: This article shows that given any orientable 3-manifold X, the 7-manifold T^*X x R admits a closed G_2-structure varphi=Re(Omega)+omega\wedge dt where Omega is a certain complex-valued 3-form on T^*X; next, given any 2-dimensional submanifold S of X, the conormal bundle N^*S of S is a 3-dimensional submanifold of T^*X x R such that varphi restricted to N^*S is equivalent to 0. A corollary of the proof of this result is that N^*S x R is a 4-dimensional submanifold of T^*X x R such that varphi restricted to N^*S x R is equivalent to 0.
Diffeomorphisms of 7-Manifolds with Closed G_2-Structure

Abstract: We introduce G_2-vector fields, Rochesterian 1-forms and Rochesterian vector fields on manifolds with a closed G_2-structure as analogues of symplectic vector fields, Hamiltonian functions and Hamiltonian vector fields respectively, and we show that the spaces of G_2-vector fields and of Rochesterian vector fields are Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra of vector fields with the standard Lie bracket. We also define, in analogy with the Poisson bracket on smooth real-valued functions from symplectic geometry, a bracket operation on the space of Rochesterian 1-forms associated to the space of Rochesterian vector fields and prove, despite the lack of a Jacobi identity, a relationship between this bracket and diffeomorphisms which preserve G_2-structures.
Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Five Odor Reducing Agents for Sewer System Odors Using an On-Line Total Reduced Sulfur Analyzer

Abstract: Sewer odors have been a concern to citizens of the Metropolitan Seoul region, which has installed combined sewer systems (CSSs) in 86% of its area. Although a variety of odorants are released from sewers, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) have been recognized as major ones. A number of technologies have been proposed to monitor or control odors from sewers. One of the most popular strategies adopted for the control of sewage odor is by applying a commercial odor-reducing agent into the sewer. In this study, the effectiveness of five different commercial odor-reducing agents (i.e., an odor masking agent, an alkaline solution, two microbial agents, and a chemical oxidant) was evaluated by continuously monitoring VSCs released from the sewer with an on-line total reduced sulfur (TRS) analyzer before and after each agent was sprayed into CSSs at five different locations of the city. In short, when the effectiveness of odor treatment was tested in the sewer system using five commercial odor reducing treatments, only the chemical oxidant was good enough to reduce the odor in terms of TRS levels measured before and after the application (p < 0.01).
Circumstellar molecular composition of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK Tau: I. Observations and LTE chemical abundance analysis

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to study the molecular composition in the circumstellar envelope around the oxygen-rich star IK Tau. We observed IK Tau in several (sub)millimeter bands using the APEX telescope during three observing periods. To determine the spatial distribution of the $\mathrm{^{12}CO(3-2)}$ emission, mapping observations were performed. To constrain the physical conditions in the circumstellar envelope, multiple rotational CO emission lines were modeled using a non local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer code. The rotational temperatures and the abundances of the other molecules were obtained assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium. An oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch star has been surveyed in the submillimeter wavelength range. Thirty four transitions of twelve molecular species, including maser lines, were detected. The kinetic temperature of the envelope was determined and the molecular abundance fractions of the molecules were estimated. The deduced molecular abundances were compared with observations and modeling from the literature and agree within a factor of 10, except for SO$_2$, which is found to be almost a factor 100 stronger than predicted by chemical models. From this study, we found that IK Tau is a good laboratory to study the conditions in circumstellar envelopes around oxygen-rich stars with (sub)millimeter-wavelength molecular lines. We could also expect from this study that the molecules in the circumstellar envelope can be explained more faithful by non-LTE analysis with lower and higher transition lines than by simple LTE analysis with only lower transition lines. In particular, the observed CO line profiles could be well reproduced by a simple expanding envelope model with a power law structure.
