Abstract: Background The activation of innate immune responses by Plasmodium vivax results in activation of effector cells and an excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that may culminate in deleterious effects. Here, we examined the activation and function of neutrophils during acute episodes of malaria. Materials and Methods Blood samples were collected from P. vivax-infected patients at admission (day 0) and 30–45 days after treatment with chloroquine and primaquine. Expression of activation markers and cytokine levels produced by highly purified monocytes and neutrophils were measured by the Cytometric Bead Assay. Phagocytic activity, superoxide production, chemotaxis and the presence of G protein-coupled receptor (GRK2) were also evaluated in neutrophils from malaria patients. Principal Findings Both monocytes and neutrophils from P. vivax-infected patients were highly activated. While monocytes were found to be the main source of cytokines in response to TLR ligands, neutrophils showed enhanced phagocytic activity and superoxide production. Interestingly, neutrophils from the malaria patients expressed high levels of GRK2, low levels of CXCR2, and displayed impaired chemotaxis towards IL-8 (CXCL8). Conclusion Activated neutrophils from malaria patients are a poor source of pro-inflammatory cytokines and display reduced chemotactic activity, suggesting a possible mechanism for an enhanced susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection during malaria.

Abstract: pojucagrass (paspalum atratum cv. 'pojuca') is a perennial tropical grass used as cultivated pasture. seed production of this cultivar is erratic, especially in the year of the seed crop establishment. between october 2002 and may 2003, an experiment was carried out in planaltina (df), brazil, to evaluate the effects of time of sowing and of seedling population densities upon the seed production potential of this grass in the year of the crop establishment. pure seed yield, harvested by means of the 'sweating' method, was affected both by time of sowing and by seedling densities. as time of sowing was delayed to late spring, yield was reduced in association with a reduction in inflorescence density. in ealier sowing (mid spring), seed yield was reduced as a consequence of plant lodging. the adverse effects of delayed sowing upon pure seed yield was attenuated by lower seedling population densities but this effect was not as pronounced as that resulting from time of sowing. thus, the highest pure seed yield (331kg ha-1) in the year of crop establishment resulted from a mid-november sowing and where there were 10 seedlings m-2.
A Control Design Approach for Controlling an Autonomous Vehicle with FPGAs
Anderson Pereira Correia,Carlos Humberto Llanos,Rodrigo Willians de Carvalho,Sadek A. Alfaro
Journal of Computers , 2010, DOI: 10.4304/jcp.5.3.360-371
Abstract: This paper describes the implementation of a platform based on reconfigurable architecture and on concepts of virtual instrumentation and its application to the hands-free driving problem. The novelty of this approach is the use of both reconfigurable systems (for developing the car’s controller) and virtual instrumentation issues for developing a high-level abstraction testing and simulation environment. The implemented platform permits (a) to control directly the real vehicle using control commands that are sent using a keyboard and (b) to simulate the control process in a virtual environment, using a virtual instrumentation approach. The car control system was developed in a microcontroller with several peripheral embedded in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The communication between the FPGA-based control system and the car is accomplished through an electronic module, which comprises several insulating and power circuit boards. The virtual instrumentation approach (for simulation and controller design objectives) was used for implementing a high-level abstraction simulation environment in LabVIEW tool, which allows representing the movement of the car in real time. The communication between the simulator and the controller is accomplished through a serial interface in which a RS-232 based protocol was implemented. The user can send commands to the control system through a keyboard with a PS2 interface. This approach opens a great variety of possibilities to validate and simulate solutions for several problems in robotic and mechatronic areas. The tests and initial overall system validation were accomplished in the simulator environment. Then, the simulation results were compared with the movement variables of the real car, which were gathered in real time. This approach makes possible to test and to validate the control system with low cost and more safety.
Metemoglobinemia: do diagnóstico ao tratamento
Nascimento, Tatiana Souza do;Pereira, Rodrigo Otávio Lami;Mello, Humberto Luiz Dias de;Costa, José;
Revista Brasileira de Anestesiologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-70942008000600011
Abstract: background and objectives: methemoglobin is the oxidized form of hemoglobin, which does not bind oxygen and increases the affinity of oxygen for the partially oxidized portion of hemoglobin. increased levels of methemoglobin in the blood are secondary to congenital changes and exposure to several chemical agents, resulting in a disorder with several differential diagnoses, which it can lead to death if it is not treated. the objective of this report was to review this subject, emphasizing relevant information for the clinical management of patients with methemoglobinemia. contents: when the concentration of methemoglobin in the blood is above 1.5%, the patient develops cyanosis, the main characteristic of this disorder. the color of the arterial blood changes to dark brown with normal pao2. one should suspect the diagnosis in patients with cyanosis and low saturation (spo2) without significant cardiopulmonary dysfunction. co-oximetry is the gold standard and defines the diagnosis. treatment should be based on whether the syndrome is acute or chronic (etiology) and on the severity of symptoms. blood levels of methemoglobin are important, especially in acute cases. basic treatment includes removal of the agent responsible for the disorder, administration of oxygen, and observation. severe cases should be treated with the specific antidote, methylene blue, which is not effective in some situations. conclusions: methemoglobinemia is a potentially severe disorder, whose diagnosis depends on a high degree of suspicion. in general, anesthesiologists are the first to detect the problem in the preoperative period and should lead the treatment.

Abstract: purpose: the aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fluoride concentration in mouthrinses and their capacity to intervene with the caries process. methods: the analysis of the fluoride concentration in the solutions was carried with ion specific electrode connected to an ion analyzer. bovine incisors enamel blocks with previously known superficial microhardness were submitted to a ph cycling model and treated with fluoridated solutions, and later reanalyzed for microhardness and fluoride incorporation. results: the fluoride concentration (ppm) found in the solutions sanifill- sanikids?, colgate plax fresh mint?, oral b?, sorriso fresh? and cepacol? (not fluoridated) were, respectively: 242.91±21.89; 248.42±3.55; 248.29±11.31; 257.61±17.57 and 35.37±10.64. the lowest loss of superficial microhardness was observed with the use sorriso fresh? (29.66%± 8.84), followed by plax fresh mint? (32.99%±14.09) and oral b? (43.00%±18.34). conclusion: the data suggest that fluoride solutions, in proper concentrations, are capable of intervening on the phenomena of demineralization and remineralization, promoting fluoride incorporation and, consequently, decreasing the loss of microhardness on dental enamel.
