Abstract: variations in soil attributes depend on the soil position in the landscape and drainage, erosion, and deposition processes. this study aimed to evaluate the soil physical and chemical properties, in a toposequence developed from basaltic parent material, in batatais, s?o paulo state, brazil. the area presents a flatter topography and altitude ranging from 740 m to 610 m, in a basalt-dominated region. the experiment was carried out along a transect of 3,000 m from the top downwards. the geomorphic surfaces were identified and delimited according to topographic and stratigraphic criteria, based on detailed field investigations. samples were collected along the representative side of profiles, for each geomorphic surface (gs) of the toposequence (gs i = top; gs ii = hillside and transport foothill; gs iii = shoulder and deposition foothill), totaling 142 samples. in addition, trenches were opened in the slope segments of the mapped geomorphic surfaces. the samples were analyzed for bulk density, texture, exchange bases (ca2+, k+, and mg2+), sum of bases, cation exchange capacity, base saturation, ph (water and kcl), sio2, al2o3, fe2o3 (h2so4 attack), free fe oxides extracted with dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate, and poorly crystallized fe extracted with ammonium oxalate. the results showed that soils developed from basaltic parent material presented physical and chemical attributes tied to the relief shapes. the use of multivariate statistical techniques made possible to identify three different environments, which are equivalent to the three geomorphic surfaces.

Abstract: the goal of this paper was to evaluate if losses in milk yield due to increase in somatic cells count are proportional or independent of the level of production. a total of 7,756 observations, monthly collected from a single herd from september/2000 up to june/2002, were used. the lactation curve was modeled by the incomplete gamma function, considering the effects of lactation order, calving season, peripartum disorder incidence and body condition score at calving. somatic cells count was added to the model as a multiplicative factor, representing relative losses, and as an additive factor, representing absolute losses. the best model was chosen based on the information criteria of schwarz (bic). the losses are absolute, becoming evident from 14,270 cells/ml, and they are 184 and 869 g/day for each increase of one unit in the natural logarithm scale, starting from that somatic cells count, for primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively.

Abstract: the relationship between milk somatic cells count (scc) and milk yield has been the aim of countless researches in several countries; however, in brazil, the literature related to this subject is scarce. therefore, the objective of this study is to verify if the losses in milk yield due to scc increase are proportional to the yield, or absolute (independent of it) and starting from which scc, the losses become evident. for this study, 13.725 observations were used, collected monthly from 6 different herds, from january/2001 up to june/2002. the analysis model, for lactation curve, was based upon the incomplete gama function, considering the effects of lactation order, herd and calving season. the scc entered in that model in two ways: as multiplicative factor (representing relative losses) and as addictive factor (representing absolute losses). the best model was chosen based on the information criteria of schwarz (bic). it is concluded that the losses are absolute, becoming evident from 17.000 cells/ml, and they are 238 and 868 ml/day for each increase of one unit in the natural logarithm scale, starting from that scc, respectively, for primiparous and multiparous.

Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502007000300007
Abstract: purpose: to investigate whether the alterations of the diverted colon segment mucosa, evidenced in fecal colitis, would be able to alter bacterial translocation (bt). methods: sixty-two wistar male rats ranging from 220 to 320 grams of weight, were divided in two groups: a (colostomy) and b (control), with 31 animals each one. in group a, all animals underwent end colostomy, one stoma, in ascending colon; and in the 70th pod was injected in five rats, by rectal route diverted segment - 2ml of a 0.9% saline solution in animals (a1 subgroup); in eight it was inoculated, by rectal route, 2ml of a solution containing escherichia coli atcc 25922 (american type culture collection), in a concentration of 108 colony forming unit for milliliters (cfu/ml) - a2 subgroup; in ten animals the same solution of e. coli was inoculated, in a concentration of 1011 cfu/ml (a3 subgroup); and in eight it was collected part of the mucus found in the diverted distal colonic segment for neutral sugars and total proteins dosage (a4 subgroup). the animals from the group b underwent the same procedures of group a, but with differences in the colostomy confection. in rats from subgroups a1, a2, a3, b1, b2, and b3 2ml of blood were aspirated from the heart, and fragments from mesenteric lymphatic nodule, liver, spleen, lung and kidney taken for microbiological analysis, after their death. this analysis consisted of evidencing the presence of e. coli atcc 25922 cfu. mann-whitney and anova tests were applied as analytic techniques for association of variables. results: the occurrence of bt was evidenced only in those animals in which inoculated concentration of e. coli atcc 25922, reached levels of 1011cfu/ml, i.e. in subgroups a3 and b3, although, being significantly greater (80%) in those animals without colostomy (subgroup b3) when compared to the ones with colostomy (20%) from the subgroup a3 (p <0.05). lung, liver and mesenteric lymphatic nodules were the tissues with larger percentile of bac

Abstract: in order to obtain new compounds with antibacterial activity, the derivatives 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoic acid (orsellinic acid) and 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoates (orsellinates) were obtained through alcoholyses of lecanoric acid. all these substances were tested against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by a microdilution method. staphylococcus aureus, xanthomonas campestris var. vesicatoria and ralstonia solanacearum were most sensitive to n-propyl 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoate, n-pentyl 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoate and n-hexyl 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoate with mic (minimal inhibitory concentration) values ranging from 62.5 to 7.8 μg×ml1. these results showed that homologation in carbon chain may lead to compounds with more pronunced activities.

Abstract: random regression models were used to estimate genetic parameters for test-day milk yield (pldc) of alpine dairy goats, implemented by bayesian methods with gibbs sampling. the estimates were compared with those obtained by random regression analysis, using reml. heritability estimates obtained by bayesian analysis ranged from 0.18 to 0.37, while those obtained by reml ranged from 0.09 to 0.32. genetic correlations between yields of close test days approached the unit, but decreased gradually as the interval between test days increased. results indicated that random regression models are appropriate to model the covariance structure of pldc and to predict genetic gains and select animals along the lactation trajectory of dairy goats. results obtained by bayesian and reml approaches were similar, although genetic variance and heritability estimates were slightly higher with bayesian methods.

Abstract: this study was conducted to evaluate the displacement and permanency patterns of grazing cattle on brachiaria decumbens deferred during 95 days under four strategies of nitrogen application (0-0, 0-100, 50-50, 100-0 kg n.ha-1), at the beginning and at the end of the rainy season. during the deferred period, in the dry season, forage yield, canopy structural characteristics, and displacement pattern were evaluated. four steers were used in ten grazing tests of 45 minutes and 14 heifers girolanda, monitored every 10 minutes during 24 hours, were used to evaluate the permanency time. pastures fertilized with 100 kg n at the end of the rainy season had higher herbage and leaf blade, sward surface height, extended leaf height, sward leaf blade bulk density and stem mass in all canopy layers. the lodging rates were higher for pastures fertilized at the end of the rainy season (0-100 and 50-50). more feeding stations and steps per minute were found in 0-100 and 50-50 fertilization strategies, due to greater difficulty in forage selection with higher degree of lodging. on the other hand, the numbers of bites per feeding station and per minute were lower for these strategies. the permanency time was greater on pastures where the fertilization was 100 kg n.ha-1 at the end of the rainy season (0-100). fertilization close to sealing period modify the displacement pattern of animals because the higher plants lodging making the animals to spend more time on pasture with greater density of leaf blade.
