Turnover Determinants of New Employees in International Hotels  [PDF]

Abstract: The high turnover rates of new employees in the first career year usually forces hotel human resource managers to face difficult dilemmas. This work presents a modified Delphi method and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to objectively select international hotels based on the results of interviews with experts in the field. Analysis results indi-cate that the experts select the international hotels with the potential highest turnover risk based on the following rank: internal contentment, external contentment, and organization proffer. Moreover, sensitivity analysis surveys weight of the degree of influence with an alternative hierarchy.
Disruption of Murine mp29/Syf2/Ntc31 Gene Results in Embryonic Lethality with Aberrant Checkpoint Response

Abstract: Human p29 is a putative component of spliceosomes, but its role in pre-mRNA is elusive. By siRNA knockdown and stable overexpression, we demonstrated that human p29 is involved in DNA damage response and Fanconi anemia pathway in cultured cells. In this study, we generated p29 knockout mice (mp29GT/GT) using the mp29 gene trap embryonic stem cells to study the role of mp29 in DNA damage response in vivo. Interruption of mp29 at both alleles resulted in embryonic lethality. Embryonic abnormality occurred as early as E6.5 in mp29GT/GT mice accompanied with decreased mRNA levels of α-tubulin and Chk1. The reduction of α-tubulin and Chk1 mRNAs is likely due to an impaired post-transcriptional event. An aberrant G2/M checkpoint was found in mp29 gene trap embryos when exposed to aphidicolin and UV light. This embryonic lethality was rescued by crossing with mp29 transgenic mice. Additionally, the knockdown of zfp29 in zebrafish resulted in embryonic death at 72 hours of development postfertilization (hpf). A lower level of acetylated α-tubulin was also observed in zfp29 morphants. Together, these results illustrate an indispensable role of mp29 in DNA checkpoint response during embryonic development.

Abstract: 內部尋獲度是網站讓使用者能夠找到確切所需資訊所在之能力。研究顯示有效之資訊架構是有助於網站內部尋獲度與使用性之提昇。然而,使用者能容忍點擊多少次滑鼠找到其所需要的資訊(網站深度) 使用者眼睛能掃視多少個網頁項目個數(網站廣度) 是網站設計師與使用性專家多年來熱烈討論與研究的議題。Zaphiris於2000研究發現,網站深度與廣度會影響使用者對網站使用的喜好程度。在以使用者為中心的設計概念下,卡片分類法一直是建構較佳尋獲度與使用性網站之既經濟又有效的工具。卡片分類法實施於使用者,主要是為獲取使用者對於網站資訊內容分類的認知,在蒐集不同使用者之分類結果後,進一步透過集群分析、因素分析等資料分析方法,找出使用者共同認知之分類模式,以建立網站架構,提昇網站尋獲度與使用性。以卡片分類法建構網站著重於使用者共同認知的形塑,對於網站深度與廣度所可能造成尋獲度及使用性之影響並未予以探討。本研究嘗試於卡片分類法建構網站架構過程中考量網站深度與廣度的因素,以提出網站建構之新方法,並藉由尋獲度評估驗證其成效。 Interior findability of a web site is the ability to allow users to find the exact needs of the information where exists in the site. Studies have shown that the effective information architecture can be used to enhance its interior findability and usability. However, the user can tolerate how many times the mouse clicks to find the information they need (site depth)? Users’ eyes can glance over how many items on a web page (site breadth)? The issues have been discussed and researched by web site designers and usability experts over the years. In 2000, Zaphiris found that the site depth and breadth have the impact on user preferences of the site. Based on user-centered design concept, the card sorting method is an economical and effective tool can be used to construct websites with better findability. Card Sorting Implementation is primarily to acquire users’ awareness about the classification of information content on a web site. After collecting the classifications from different users, and further through cluster analysis, factor analysis and other data analysis methods to identify the common perception of classifications from different users’, we can create a web structure with enhanced findability and usability. Card sorting method is applied to construct the shape of the site focused on user shared cognition, but the site depth and breadth may cause the effects on its findability and usability have not be explored. This study attempts to apply the card sorting method to construct the web site architecture in considering the factors of site depth and breadth, thus to propose a new method of website construction. We then use the evaluation of findability of web site to verify its effectiveness.
A Study of Travel Agencies’ Human Resources in Relation to Internet Marketing

Abstract: When technological advances emerge in electronic commerce, travel agencies rapidly take account of their application in Internet marketing. Internet marketing presents many advantages to its users, such as the ability to break the barriers of time and space, convenience and speed of trade between travel agencies and consumers, ability to provide customers with sufficient information of travel services and products, and low cost. In order to take advantage of the new Internet market, travel agencies have already set up websites to attract potential customers. However, the traditional marketing of travel agencies generally depends on the sales force, because travel agency representatives act not only as salespeople, but also as guides and escorts. Therefore, personal selling offers the benefits of evaluating travel courses in advance, providing information on various choices, and accompanying customers throughout the trip to help them feel at ease. Since Internet marketing and personal selling both have their own advantages, should travel agency salespeople feel threatened by the emergence of Internet marketing? Will the marketing functions impact travel agency salespeople because consumers purchase services on the Internet themselves? The purpose of this study is to discover whether the travel agencies salespeople feel threatened by the development of Internet marketing. Also, this study seeks to reveal the specific personal thoughts of travel agency salespeople if they do feel threatened. At its conclusion, this study will provide suggestions for training programs or criteria of recruitment for the human resource directors in travel agencies. Also, those interested in travel business may use the results of this study as guidelines as they prepare themselves for the impact of Internet marketing.
Persistent Topology and Metastable State in Conformational Dynamics

Abstract: The large amount of molecular dynamics simulation data produced by modern computational models brings big opportunities and challenges to researchers. Clustering algorithms play an important role in understanding biomolecular kinetics from the simulation data, especially under the Markov state model framework. However, the ruggedness of the free energy landscape in a biomolecular system makes common clustering algorithms very sensitive to perturbations of the data. Here, we introduce a data-exploratory tool which provides an overview of the clustering structure under different parameters. The proposed Multi-Persistent Clustering analysis combines insights from recent studies on the dynamics of systems with dominant metastable states with the concept of multi-dimensional persistence in computational topology. We propose to explore the clustering structure of the data based on its persistence on scale and density. The analysis provides a systematic way to discover clusters that are robust to perturbations of the data. The dominant states of the system can be chosen with confidence. For the clusters on the borderline, the user can choose to do more simulation or make a decision based on their structural characteristics. Furthermore, our multi-resolution analysis gives users information about the relative potential of the clusters and their hierarchical relationship. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated in three biomolecules: alanine dipeptide, Villin headpiece, and the FiP35 WW domain.

Abstract: 由头皮上的电压推断出大脑内神经活动源的过程称之为脑电逆问题,这一问题的解决具有重要的研究意义和应用价值。为了有效地进行脑电逆问题的反演计算,提出了一种基于状态空间的新的脑电逆问题求解算法。该方法首先根据神经系统的动力学方程得到状态方程,并由脑电系统的观测方程构成测量方程;然后应用卡尔曼滤波方法来反演大脑内活动源的信息。这种新的求逆算法不仅可以处理脑电系统中的不确定因素,而且还可以将静态和动态脑电逆问题的求解统一到同一框架下,因此具有一定的新颖性;最后分别给出了模拟数据和实际脑电数据的实验结果。实验结果证明,卡尔曼滤波法更具优越性。
Ischemic Preconditioning Protects against Spinal Cord Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rabbits by Attenuating Blood Spinal Cord Barrier Disruption

Abstract: Ischemic preconditioning has been reported to protect against spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. To investigate this, Japanese white rabbits underwent I-R (30 min aortic occlusion followed by reperfusion), ischemic preconditioning (three cycles of 5 min aortic occlusion plus 5 min reperfusion) followed by I-R, or sham surgery. At 4 and 24 h following reperfusion, neurological function was assessed using Tarlov scores, blood spinal cord barrier permeability was measured by Evan’s Blue extravasation, spinal cord edema was evaluated using the wet-dry method, and spinal cord expression of zonula occluden-1 (ZO-1), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured by Western blot and a real-time polymerase chain reaction. ZO-1 was also assessed using immunofluorescence. Spinal cord I-R injury reduced neurologic scores, and ischemic preconditioning treatment ameliorated this effect. Ischemic preconditioning inhibited I-R-induced increases in blood spinal cord barrier permeability and water content, increased ZO-1 mRNA and protein expression, and reduced MMP-9 and TNF-α mRNA and protein expression. These findings suggest that ischemic preconditioning attenuates the increase in blood spinal cord barrier permeability due to spinal cord I-R injury by preservation of tight junction protein ZO-1 and reducing MMP-9 and TNF-α expression.
Decreased Expression of the FOXO3a Gene Is Associated with Poor Prognosis in Primary Gastric Adenocarcinoma Patients

Abstract: Background FOXO3a, a member of the forkhead class ‘O’ (FOXO) transcription factor family, controls a wide spectrum of biological processes, such as DNA damage repair, apoptosis, and cell cycle regulation. FOXO3a has been shown to be a tumor suppressor in various cancers. This study investigated the expression of FOXO3a in primary gastric adenocarcinomas and its prognostic value for primary gastric adenocarcinoma patients. Methods Real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining were used to detect FOXO3a expression in primary gastric cancerous surgical specimens and adjacent non-tumorous tissues. Results Our data showed that the expression of FOXO3a mRNA (p = 0.03) and protein (p = 0.019) was lower in cancerous tissues compared with their adjacent non-tumorous tissues. In addition, the chi-square test revealed that low FOXO3a expression was significantly correlated with larger tumor size (p = 0.007), poor histopathological classification (p = 0.029), depth of invasion (p = 0.049), local lymph node metastasis (p = 0.013), distant metastasis (p = 0.013) and AJCC staging (p<0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated that low expression of FOXO3a was significantly correlated with a poor prognosis for gastric cancer patients (p<0.001). The multivariate analysis showed that FOXO3a expression was an independent prognostic factor of the overall survival rate of patients with primary gastric adenocarcinoma. Conclusion Our study suggested that decreased FOXO3a expression may play an important role in the progression of gastric cancer. FOXO3a could be a valuable prognostic marker as well as a potential molecular therapy target for gastric cancer patients.

Four a-galactosyl phytosphingosine 2,6’-diamide analogs were prepared from 2,6’-diamino a-galactosylphytosphingosine and the aromatic-bearing carboxylic acids. After purification with High Performance Liquid Chromatography, a flowcytometry for the four compounds for stimulation of human Va24+/Vb11+ NKT cell populations was carried out. Additional keto groups on the acyl chains of the 2,6’-diamide compound was associated with the enhanced stimulating effect.

Psychometric properties of the Chinese craving beliefs questionnaire for heroin abusers in methadone treatment

Abstract: Participants were 445 heroin abusers from four methadone clinics in Northern Taiwan. Fifty-one of the participants were tested twice within a two-week period at a different hospital to examine test-retest reliability.Three-factor solution using principal component analysis was identified in the CCBQ: will power, compulsive behavior, and negative coping, accounting for 54.6% of the variance. Internal consistency analysis indicated that the three factors have strong reliability, with Cronbach alphas ranging from .81 to .92. The test-retest ICC coefficient is .80. The test-retest coefficients for the subscales will power, compulsive behavior, and negative coping are .76, .51, and .64, respectively. Overall, the data show that the CCBQ has acceptable reliability and validity, demonstrating that it can be a research instrument for assessing heroin craving beliefs.The psychometric properties of the CCBQ seem promising for both research and clinical purposes, and the scale thus deserves further refinement and validation with heroin abusers.Methadone treatment is used widely as the first-choice, most available treatment for heroin dependence. Oral ingestion of methadone cannot only help opiate addicts prevent HIV infection, but it also reduces the negative consequences of heroin abuse by managing withdrawal syndromes and cravings [1,2]. Methadone maintenance therapy primarily provides heroin-dependent patients with long-term methadone and recovery plans, such as hygiene training, routine physical and mental health checkups, urine tests, and group psychological counseling [3,4]. Since the studies on the effects of methadone on HIV prevention and heroin dependence syndrome, public health researchers and psychiatrists have been investigating how best to improve the outcomes and outcome assessments further for their heroin dependent participants.
