Abstract: This patient was admitted from oncology clinic for ten days of hemoptysis on Coumadin. Her laboratory data on admission showed a platelet count of 14,000/μL and an INR of 4.5. She was found on bronchoscopy with her right mainstem completely occluded by a clot. A cryoprobe was used and the clot was removed in one piece as seen above in a 4 x 4 container. The clot was notable to have the cast of the right mainstem bronchial rings as well as impressions of the right upper, right middle, and right lower lobe bronchus. The entire length of the clot was approximately four centimeters.

Abstract: objective: detect of cardiac alterations in children with aids and compare their evolution with the administration of only one anti-retroviral and the recent cases who received drugs in combination. methods: we prospectively studied 47 children in 3 groups: group 1, 20 cases treated only with zidovudine; group 2, 10 patients treated initially with zidovudine and later with a combination of drugs and in group 3, 17 patients, who receiced two or three since the beginning. in all patients it was done chest x-ray, ekg and echocardiography every 6 months and after death complete pathological study. results: among the 45 patients cases 26 (57%) were index cases. malnutrition, diarrhea tachycardia, signs of congestive heart failure, pericardial effusion, abnormal ventricular repolarization and arrhythmias were more frequent in group 1. echocardiographic abnormalities were present in 10 (50%) children of group 1. they were less frequent in the others two groups. in regard to the outcome in group 1, two patients had worsening of sings of cardiomyopaty and 4 died. cardiac dysfunction in all cases of group 2 and 3 improved with the medication. conclusion:- the children who received combination and their cardiac alterations had more favorable outcome than those who received only one drug.

Abstract: An approach for the thermodynamics of the thermoelastic martensitic transformation in β-Cubase alloys is suggested.Driving forces for martensitic transformation,T_0 and M_s tempera-tures in Cu-Zn,Cu-Al and Cu-Zn-Al alloys were calculated and the calculated M_s are ingood agreement with the experimental ones.Ordering of the parent phase lowers M_s(T_0)inCu-Zn and Cu-Zn-Al alloys,but raises M_s(T_0)in Cu-Al alloys.Two methods for the es-timation of the critical driving force for the thermoelastic martensitic transformation are alsointroduced.

Abstract: In this paper, instability at an interface between two miscible liquids with identical mechanical properties but different electrical conductivities is analyzed in the presence of an electric field that is perpendicular to the interface. A parallel electric field case was considered in a previous work [1]. A sharp Eulerian interface is considered between the two miscible liquids. Linear stability analysis leads to an analytic solution for the critical condition of instability. The mechanism of instability is analyzed. Key differences between the perpendicular and parallel electric field cases are discussed. The effect of a microchannel geometry is studied and the relevant non-dimensional parameters are identified.

Abstract: A comprehensive approach estimating sediment yield from a watershed is needed to develop better measures for mitigating sediment disasters and assessing downstream impacts. In the present study, an attempt has been made to develop an integrated method, considering sediment supplies associated with soil erosion, shallow landslide and debris flow to estimate sediment yield from a debris-flow-prone watershed on a storm event basis. The integrated method is based on the HSPF and TRIGRS models for predicting soil erosion and shallow landslide sediment yield, and the FLO-2D model for calculating debris flow sediment yield. The proposed method was applied to potential debris-flow watersheds located in the Sioulin Township of Hualien County. The available data such as hourly rainfall data, historical streamflow and sediment records as well as event-based landslide inventory maps have been used for model calibration and validation. Results for simulating sediment yield have been confirmed by comparisons of observed data from several typhoon events. The verified method employed a 24-h design hyetograph with the 100-yr return period to simulate sediment yield within the study area. The results revealed that the influence of shallow landslides on sediment supply as compared with soil erosion was significant. The estimate of landslide transport capacity into a main channel indicated the sediment delivery ratio on a typhoon event basis was approximately 38.4%. In addition, a comparison of sediment yields computed from occurrence and non-occurrence of debris flow scenarios showed that the sediment yield from an occurrence condition was found to be increasing at about 14.2 times more than estimated under a non-occurrence condition. This implied watershed sediment hazard induced by debris flow may cause severe consequences.
Anisotropic magnetic and superconducting properties of aligned weak-ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr$_2$RCu$_2$O$_8$ (R = rare earths)

Abstract: The powder alignment method is used to investigate the anisotropic physical properties of the weak-ferromagnetic superconductor system RuSr2RCu2O8 (R = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Gd0.5Dy0.5). The RuSr2GdCu2O8 cuprate is a weak-ferromagnetic superconductor with a magnetic ordering of Ru moments at TN(Ru) = 131 K, a superconducting transition in the CuO2 layers at Tc = 56 K, and a low temperature Gd antiferromagnetic ordering at TN(Gd) = 2.5 K. Due to weak magnetic anisotropy of this tetragonal system, highly c-axis aligned microcrystalline powder (diameter ~ 1-10 $\mu$m) in epoxy can be obtained only for R = Eu and Gd through the field-rotation powder alignment method where c-axis is perpendicular to the aligned magnetic field Ba = 0.9 T and parallel to the rotation axis. For smaller rare earth compound R = Gd0.5Dy0.5, powder alignment can be achieved using the simple field powder alignment method where c-axis is partially aligned along the aligned magnetic field. The anisotropic temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility for the c-axis aligned powders exhibit weak anisotropy with $\chi_{c} > \chi_{ab}$ at room temperature due to anisotropic rare earth, Eu and Gd, contribution and crossover to $\chi_{c} < \chi_{ab}$ below 190 K where strong Ru anisotropic short-range exchange interaction overtakes the rare earth contribution. Anisotropic diamagnetic superconducting intragrain shielding signal of aligned microcrystalline RuSr2GdCu2O8 powder-in-epoxy below vortex lattice melting temperature at 39 K in 1-G field is much weaker than the intergrain polycrystalline bulk sample signal due to the small grain size (d ~ 1-10 $\mu$m), long penetration depth ($\lambda_{ab}$ ~ 0.55 $\mu$m, $\lambda_{c}$ ~ 0.66 $\mu$m) and the two-dimensional (2D) character of CuO2 layers.
