Study on the spatiotemporal variability of eco-hydrological characteristics of the rivers in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region and their driving forces

Abstract: Taking two typical rivers in high mountains and steep gorge areas as example, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal variability of the eco-hydrological characteristics and the driving forces leading to changes. Firstly, based on the species-environmental data processing, this paper adopts canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) method to identify the environmental factors influencing the distribution of river bank vegetation. Secondly, this study uses the ecological diversity index to represent the spatiotemporal variability of ecological characteristics. Thirdly, this paper uses the multiple correlation method to analyze the relationship between the hydrological factors and meteorological factors, and to identify the key factors leading to the hydrological regime changes. At last, based on the analysis of basin water quality data, this paper analyzes the regularity of spatiotemporal variability and its driving forces. By the systematic analysis on the outcome, we could get that the spatiotemporal distribution of eco-hydrological characteristics shows the regular changes from the upstream to downstream (from the north to the south), and the spatiotemporal variability of eco-hydrological characteristics is typical from the east to the west. Altitude, aspect and water distribution are the primary natural driving forces leading to the spatiotemporal variability of eco-hydrological characteristics; and exploitation and operation of hydroelectric power station, construction of road on the river bank, and basin land utilization are the main human driving forces.

Abstract:
The hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance (HLB) of surfactants has a great influ-ence on surfactants. Among them, polyethylene glycol has an HLB value of 20 and is highly hydrophilic; oleic acid has an HLB value of 1, which is very lipophilic; and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate has an HLB value of 10.6 be-tween the two. This paper explores the use of these three surfactants with typi-cal HLB values to improve the performance of magnetorheological fluids, mainly to study its effect on the stability of magnetorheological fluids. Tests have shown that the use of lipophilic surfactants in oil-based magnetorheologi-cal fluids has better sedimentation stability than the use of hydrophilic surfac-tants.
Estimation of Water Environmental Capacity Considering Hydraulic Project Operation in the Xiangyang Reach of the Han River, Central China  [PDF]

Abstract: Using the Xiangyang Reach of the Han River as an example, this paper evaluates the changes of water environmental capacity after the implementation of Cuijiaying Hydro-junction project. The allowable pollutant loads entering the Xiangyang Reach were estimated using two-dimensional steady state water quality model with different data sets. The water environmental capacity has declined in the reservoir area of the Cuijiaying Hydro-junction project during the low-flow period; it is appearing to increase slightly in the upper and lower stream of this reservoir. However, the state of flow may turn into the state of reservoirs flow in the reservoir area, and the changes of hydrological regime may cause the water flow and the nutrient contents suitable for the occurrence of ecological environment problems.

Abstract: 工业冷却水循环利用过程中,随浓缩倍数提高,循环水水质向高碱度、高硬度、高pH值和高温方向发展,结垢倾向严重.聚磷酸盐和有机膦酸盐是性能优良的钙垢抑制剂,但在高温、高浓缩倍数条件下时,有机膦酸盐类不见得均可达良好的水垢抑制效果.分别计算了氨基三亚甲基膦酸(ATMP)、羟基亚乙基二膦酰(HEDP)、2-膦酸丁烷-1,2,4-三羧酸(PBTC)和六偏磷酸钠(NaPO3)6在循环水浓缩倍数为1~5倍,温度为80℃时在不同投加浓度下的阻垢率.结果表明,有机膦酸盐和聚磷均有临界值效应;有机膦酸盐的阻垢性能优于聚磷酸盐;ATMP和HEDP在低浓缩倍数下有较高的阻垢率,随着硬度、碱度、pH值的提高,阻垢率下降明显;PBTC的水垢抑制剂功效明显优于其他有机膦酸盐,PBTC可应用在较宽广的水质操作范围,增加系统的操作安全性.
NF-κB2 mutation targets survival, proliferation and differentiation pathways in the pathogenesis of plasma cell tumors

Abstract: We conducted a detailed histopathological characterization of lymphomas developed in p80HT transgenic mice and microarray gene expression profiling of p80HT B cells with the goal of identifying genes that drive plasma cell tumor development. We further verified the significance of our findings in human multiple myeloma cell lines.Approximately 40% of p80HT mice showed elevated levels of monoclonal immunoglobulin (M-protein) in the serum and developed plasma cell tumors. Some of these mice displayed key features of human multiple myeloma with accumulation of plasma cells in the bone marrow, osteolytic bone lesions and/or diffuse osteoporosis. Gene expression profiling of B cells from M-protein-positive p80HT mice revealed aberrant expression of genes known to be important in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma, including cyclin D1, cyclin D2, Blimp1, survivin, IL-10 and IL-15. In vitro assays demonstrated a critical role of Stat3, a key downstream component of IL-10 signaling, in the survival of human multiple myeloma cells.These findings provide a mouse model for human multiple myeloma with aberrant NF-κB2 activation and suggest a molecular mechanism for NF-κB2 signaling in the pathogenesis of plasma cell tumors by coordinated regulation of plasma cell generation, proliferation and survival.
Island Cotton Gbve1 Gene Encoding A Receptor-Like Protein Confers Resistance to Both Defoliating and Non-Defoliating Isolates of Verticillium dahliae

Abstract: Verticillium wilt caused by soilborne fungus Verticillium dahliae could significantly reduce cotton yield. Here, we cloned a tomato Ve homologous gene, Gbve1, from an island cotton cultivar that is resistant to Verticillium wilt. We found that the Gbve1 gene was induced by V. dahliae and by phytohormones salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, and ethylene, but not by abscisic acid. The induction of Gbve1 in resistant cotton was quicker and stronger than in Verticillium-susceptible upland cotton following V. dahliae inoculation. Gbve1 promoter-driving GUS activity was found exclusively in the vascular bundles of roots and stems of transgenic Arabidopsis. Virus-induced silencing of endogenous genes in resistant cotton via targeting a fragment of the Gbve1 gene compromised cotton resistance to V. dahliae. Furthermore, we transformed the Gbve1 gene into Arabidopsis and upland cotton through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Overexpression of the Gbve1 gene endowed transgenic Arabidopsis and upland cotton with resistance to high aggressive defoliating and non-defoliating isolates of V. dahliae. And HR-mimic cell death was observed in the transgenic Arabidopsis. Our results demonstrate that the Gbve1 gene is responsible for resistance to V. dahliae in island cotton and can be used for breeding cotton varieties that are resistant to Verticillium wilt.
Environmental Degradation and Rural Poverty in Zambia: A Silent Alliance

Abstract: The relationship among population, environment and poverty is mediated by a number of socio-economic, cultural, political and developmental variables whose relative significance varies considerably from one context to another. This study examines the complex interrelationships between rural poverty and land degradation and attempts to explain the inefficacy of broad development programs implemented in alleviating rural poverty and reversing deterioration of land resources. The purpose of this study is to advance an integrative model to analyze the processes creating rural impoverishment and land degradation in a developing country. The case of Zambia is used to empirically substantiate and validate the framework. The model is designed to provide a vehicle for elucidating the interactions between rural poverty and land degradation, particularly deforestation. Deforestation is related positively to population pressure on cultivated land (the smaller the cultivated area per person, the higher the rate of deforestation); the rate of population growth (the higher the population growth rate, the higher the rate of deforestation due to land clearance and fuel wood provision) and policies favorable to agriculture (the more profitable the agricultural policy, the lower the rate of deforestation). Deforestation is negatively related to the use of modern farm inputs such as fertilizer (the greater the use of modern inputs the lower the need to clear more land for farming). Open-access land tenure situations were found to stimulate deforestation. The model is then used to propose a policy package to improve the living conditions of the poor people and to minimize environmental degradation in Zambia.
On the Quick Construction of the Edge-Balance Index Sets of a Classes of Nested Network Graph

Abstract: The research of Boolean index sets of graphs is one of the important graph theory in the graph theory. Boolean index sets of graphs are to use the vertex sets and the edge sets of graphs to study the characteristics of various graphs and their inherent characteristics through corresponding the mapping function to Z_2. Its theory can be applied to information engineering, communication networks, computer science, economic management, medicine, etc. The edge-balance index set is an important issue in Boolean index set. In this paper, we defined edge-friendly labeling of the graph, edge-balance index set of the graph and the graph C_(n^m) × P_(m_n) (n=4,m≥2). We completely determine the edge-balance index sets of the graph C_(4^m) × P_(m_4) (m=0(mod3)) and solve formula proof and graphic tectonic methods.

Evaluation of Sustainable Tourism Development of the Hotel Industry in Hainan, China by Earth Check  [PDF]

Abstract:

The tourism industry has a higher dependence on natural and cultural resources and is more vulnerable to environmental impacts than any other industry. It faces a plethora of issues, risks, and opportunities related to sustainability and environmental change. The hotel industry is one of the most important parts of tourism. Three China Green certified hotels (the Guesthouse International Hotel Sanya, the Leaguen Resort Sanya Bay and the Boao Golden Coast Hot Spring Hotel) are being chosen as samples for our case studies. This paper introduces these three hotels, and then gives the results from the field investigation and the interviews conducted with hotel staff. Based on the data collected, this paper uses Earth Checkas, a sustainable development evaluation tool, to assess these three hotels. Through evaluating our results, we verify whether the China Green Hotel standard meets the international standard requirements of Earth Check. Meanwhile, with this inspection we determine whether Earth Check is suitable for application in the China hotel industry and the whole tourism industry. Through our research of these three hotels, we found that the Earth Check standard can be implemented in the hotel industry in China to help these hotels develop a sustainable hotel.
