Pulsed electromagnetic fields stimulation prevents steroid-induced osteonecrosis in rats

Abstract: Seventy-two male adult Wistar rats were divided into three groups and treated as follows. (1) PEMF stimulation group (PEMF group, n = 24): intravenously injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10 μg/kg) on day 0 and intramuscularly injected with methylprednisolone acetate (MPSL, 20 mg/kg) on days 1, 2 and 3, then subjected to PEMF stimulation 4 h per day for 1 to 8 weeks. (2) Methylprednisolone-treated group (MPSL group, n = 24): injected the same dose of LPS and MPSL as the PEMF group but without exposure to PEMF. (3) Control group (PS group, n = 24): injected 0.9% saline in the same mode at the same time points. The incidence of osteonecrosis, serum lipid levels and the mRNA and protein expression of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) in the proximal femur were measured 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks after the last MPSL (or saline) injection.The incidence of osteonecrosis in the PEMF group (29%) was significantly lower than that observed in the MPSL group (75%), while no osteonecrosis was observed in the PS group. The serum lipid levels were significantly lower in the PEMF and PS groups than in the MPSL group. Compared with the MPSL and PS groups, the mRNA expression of TGF-β1 increased, reaching a peak 1 week after PEMF treatment, and remained high for 4 weeks, then declined at 8 weeks, whereas the protein expression of TGF-β1 increased, reaching a peak at 2 weeks after PEMF treatment, and remained high for 8 weeks.PEMF stimulation can prevent steroid-induced osteonecrosis in rats, and the underlying mechanisms involve decreased serum lipid levels and increased expression of TGF-β1.Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is the end point of a disease process that results in progressive collapse of the femoral head followed by destruction of the hip joint. Cold Temperatures Increase Cold Hardiness in the Next Generation Ophraella communa Beetles

Abstract: The leaf beetle, Ophraella communa, has been introduced to control the spread of the common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, in China. We hypothesized that the beetle, to be able to track host-range expansion into colder climates, can phenotypically adapt to cold temperatures across generations. Therefore, we questioned whether parental experience of colder temperatures increases cold tolerance of the progeny. Specifically, we studied the demography, including development, fecundity, and survival, as well as physiological traits, including supercooling point (SCP), water content, and glycerol content of O. communa progeny whose parents were maintained at different temperature regimes. Overall, the entire immature stage decreased survival of about 0.2%–4.2% when parents experienced cold temperatures compared to control individuals obtained from parents raised at room temperature. However, intrinsic capacity for increase (r), net reproductive rate (R0) and finite rate of increase (λ) of progeny O. communa were maximum when parents experienced cold temperatures. Glycerol contents of both female and male in progeny was significantly higher when maternal and paternal adults were cold acclimated as compared to other treatments. This resulted in the supercooling point of the progeny adults being significantly lower compared to beetles emerging from parents that experienced room temperatures. These results suggest that cold hardiness of O. communa can be promoted by cold acclimation in previous generation, and it might counter-balance reduced survival in the next generation, especially when insects are tracking their host-plants into colder climates.

Abstract: QC-Tree is one of the most storage-efficient structures for data cubes in an MOLAP system. Although QC- Tree can achieve a high compression ratio, it is still a fully materialized data cube. In this paper, an improved structure PMC is presented allowing us to materialize only a part of the cells in a QC-Tree to save more storage space. There is a notable difference between our partially materialization algorithm and traditional materialized views selection algorithms. In a traditional algorithm, when a view is selected, all the cells in this view are to be materialized. Otherwise, if a view is not selected, all the cells in this view will not be materialized. This strategy results in the unstable query performance. The presented algorithm, however, selects and materializes data in cell level, and, along with further reduced space and update cost, it can ensure a stable query performance. A series of experiments are conducted on both synthetic and real data sets. The results show that PMC can further reduce storage space occupied by the data cube, and can shorten the time to update the cube.

Abstract: Numerical investigation of the electronic structure of a small closed quantum system fabricated on the two-dimensional electron gas forming on the interference between GaAs and AlxGa1-xAs is reported. The Kohn-Sham spin-density-fun ctional theory is applied. Self-consistent results show that the quantum system assumes unequal numbers of electrons for spin up and spin down because of the existence of bound states. The profiles of effective potential energies for spin up and spin down electrons are then found to be very different, which will result in different transmission coefficients. It is notable that this spin polarization is caused by the geometry of the nanostructure.

Space complexity preserving algorithms composition

Abstract: This work considered the space complexity preserving problem, that was under which conditions the space comple-xity of composing two algorithms will be the sum of the space complexity of the two original algorithms. By formalizing the ways of oracle queries, this paper proved that the space complexity would preserve when oracle queries were non-adaptive, i.e., the oracle queries were independent of the past oracle answers, but space complexity would not preserve in the adaptive case.
Online Aggregation on Data Cubes Without Auxiliary Information

Abstract: Typically, online aggregation algorithms on multi-dimensional data need additional auxiliary data for estimation, which make the performance of the storage and maintenance of the data cube worse. This paper presents the PE (progressively estimate) and HPE (hybrid progressively estimate) to progressively estimate the answers for range queries in the QC-Trees. MPE (multiple progressively estimate) is also proposed to simultaneously evaluate batches of range-sum queries. The difference between the algorithms and other online aggregation algorithms on data cubes is that these algorithms do not need any auxiliary information. The idea of this estimation method is to utilize the data stored in the QC-Tree itself. As a result, this algorithm will not deteriorate the performance of the storage and maintenance of the data cubes. Analysis and experimental results show that the algorithms provide an accurate estimation in far less time than the normal algorithms.
