This study aimed to analyze different time scales to determine the most appropriate interval in the study of ingestive behavior of confined dairy cows. The experiment was conducted at the farm Blue Water, city of Macarani-Bahia, in the period from October to November 2005. 12 crossbred Holstein cows were used, with an average body weight of 478.5 15.89kg. The treatments of this study were the intervals (five; 10; 15; 20 and 30 minutes), observed during ingestive behavior. Behavior observations occurred on the second to last day of each period of 15 days data collection for 24 hours. There has been analysis of variance and Dunnett test application, adopting 0.05 as the critical level of probability. There was no significant effect of record scales of time spent eating, ruminating, idling and efficiencies of feeding and rumination. For the variables of the numbers of periods of eating, ruminating and idle and times per period of feeding, ruminating and resting, the ranges of 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes were different when compared with the interval of five minutes of observation. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the intervals and numbers of observations on the ingestive behavior of confined dairy heifers. We used 20 heifers Holstein x Zebu, with initial body weight of 165.5kg and mean age of 13 months. The heifers were divided into four feeding groups, composed of inclusions of cocoa meal based diets (0; 7; 14 and 21%). The treatments were the intervals (five; 10; 15; 20 and 30 minutes), number of repetitions (four, three, two and one), and turns (four, three, two and one) the observation of ingestive behavior. The evaluation came at the end of each period of 21 days of data collection for 24 hours, and activities recorded in five different intervals: 0; 10; 15; 20 and 30 minutes. Aspects of ingestive behavior were observed in four, three, two and one replicates and turns. There was no significant effect of scales of record on the time of feeding, ruminating and idle, either on the efficiencies of feeding and rumination. For variables related to rumination activity, no differences between different numbers of observations, nor for the different turns

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the performance and ingestive behavior of crossbred heifers in grass. The experiment was conducted at Princesa do Mateiro farm, Ribeirao do Largo, Bahia. 20 heifers were used with blood level 5/8 Guzerá milk lineage and 3/8 Holstein, with an average of 18 months of age and body weight of 187 ± 13.1 kg. The experiment lasted 224 days and the animals raised in a stocking grazing Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú. There is a positive correlation between grazing time with weight gain (GMD) and average daily gain (GP). The rumination showed positive correlations with body weight (PC). Negative correlations were found between the time from other activities and feed conversion (CA). The time from other activities was positively correlated with the GP and GMD. There is a negative correlation between the total time spent eating and chewing total with the GMD and GP. The total chewing time was positively correlated with CA. Weight gain, average daily gain and feed conversion did not correlate significantly with discrete periods of ingestive behavior. The performance is not associated with ingestive behavior of crossbred heifers on pasture. So, to demystify, through this study, the relationship between feeding behavior and productive performance. The correlations with aspects of rumination demonstrate that it does not interfere with productive results of the animals. Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982009000600016
Abstract: this experiment was carried out with the objective of determining the macrominerals (ca, p, mg, k and na) requirements of nellore steers under grazing. twenty four nellore steers (371 ± 14 kg of bw and 26 mo old) were used. four steers were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment (reference group), serving as a reference in subsequent study. the remaining 20 animals were weighed and distributed into a completely randomized design with four supplementation levels offer: 0.0 (mineral mixture - control), 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9% of bw, with five replications. the supplements, based on ground corn, soybean meal and/or urea, were previously balanced to achieve an average daily gain of 350, 650 and 850g, respectively, for the different supplementation levels offer. the contents of macrominerals retained in the animal body were determined by regression equations of the macrominerals body content logarithm in function of the empty body weight logarithm (ebw). net macrominerals requirements for a gain of 1kg of ebw were obtained using the equation y'= b.10a.xb-1, with a and b, respectively, the intercept and the regression coefficient of the prediction equations of macrominerals in the animal body contents for each macromineral considered. the concentrations of all macrominerals, in the empty body weight and gain of the empty body weight, decreased with the increase in the body weight. total calcium and phosphorus dietary requirements are higher than those recommended in the literature.

Abstract: this study was conducted to evaluate the displacement and permanency patterns of grazing cattle on brachiaria decumbens deferred during 95 days under four strategies of nitrogen application (0-0, 0-100, 50-50, 100-0 kg n.ha-1), at the beginning and at the end of the rainy season. during the deferred period, in the dry season, forage yield, canopy structural characteristics, and displacement pattern were evaluated. four steers were used in ten grazing tests of 45 minutes and 14 heifers girolanda, monitored every 10 minutes during 24 hours, were used to evaluate the permanency time. pastures fertilized with 100 kg n at the end of the rainy season had higher herbage and leaf blade, sward surface height, extended leaf height, sward leaf blade bulk density and stem mass in all canopy layers. the lodging rates were higher for pastures fertilized at the end of the rainy season (0-100 and 50-50). more feeding stations and steps per minute were found in 0-100 and 50-50 fertilization strategies, due to greater difficulty in forage selection with higher degree of lodging. on the other hand, the numbers of bites per feeding station and per minute were lower for these strategies. the permanency time was greater on pastures where the fertilization was 100 kg n.ha-1 at the end of the rainy season (0-100). fertilization close to sealing period modify the displacement pattern of animals because the higher plants lodging making the animals to spend more time on pasture with greater density of leaf blade.

Abstract: the objective this study was to evaluate the diurnal ingestive behavior of nellore steers on brachiaria grass pasture submitted to protein and energy supplementation. it was used 40 nellore steers, at initial weight of 373.7 ± 14.9 kg, and at 26 months of age, distributed in four levels of supplementation:mineral mixture, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9% of body weight of energy and protein supplementation. the animals were visually observed by two 12-hour periods from 6:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m. grazing, ruminating and idle times had a quadratic effect and the trough time had a linear increase effect. the total dry matter intakes were not affected by the supplementation levels. total consumption of dry matter from pasture and all the variables related to neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber decreased linearly. the number of chews per bolus linearly decreased. the number of grazing periods and time for feed period increased linearly. the time for grazing period decreased linearly. the number of ruminating periods, number of idle periods and time for rumination period suffered a quadratic effect. the number of trough periods suffered a cubical effect. supplementation compromises the variables related to diurnal ingestive behavior, not only because of the quantity of ingested food but also because of its composition and because of the roughage:concentrate ratio, therefore, attention on meal balance is required.

Abstract: in this study, it was aimed to evaluate the economic responses of finishing nellore steers to supplementation of brachiaria brizantha pastures in southwestern bahia. the experiment was developed from august to november 2006 in a 52-ha area divided in eight pickets of approximately 6.5 hectares each. it was tested four levels of concentrate supplementation (control, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9% of the body weight of animal) compared to supplementation with mineral salt. supplementation levels raised the amount of meat produced per hectare. the curve of revenue growth is less sharp than the cost growth curve, resulting in a flattening of profit according to levels of the studied supplementation. the best biological results obtained from high levels of supplements are not economically sustainable because of the increase in the production cost, however, supplementation levels lower than 0.3% of body weight in the finishing phase are feasible and they are potentially economical.
