Critical Care , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/cc11653
Abstract: Plasma citrulline has been used as a marker of intestinal dysfunction because critically ill patients have an acute reduction of enterocyte mass with a reduction in citrulline synthesis. However, the influence of renal failure on plasma citrulline levels must be re-evaluated [1]. Circulating intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP or FABP6) has been found to be an early marker of intestinal necrosis after aortic surgery [2], after Pringle maneuver in liver surgery [3] and in acute pancreatitis [4]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of circulating fatty acid binding protein in the evaluation of intestinal failure in critically ill patients.Plasma I-FABP concentrations were measured in blood samples from 72 critically ill patients admitted to the University of S?o Paulo Department of Emergency Medicine and from 10 healthy controls. Patients comprised 28 critically ill non-infected patients, 13 patients with severe sepsis, 24 patients with septic shock and five patients recovering from septic shock (48 hours without vasopressors). The prevalent sources of infection were pulmonary, urinary tract and catheter-related. The project was approved by the hospital ethic committee and the patients signed informed consent. We observed a significant elevation of serum levels of I-FABP in patients with septic shock when compared with healthy controls (Figure 1).The intestinal functions are complex and comprise not only nutrient digestion and absorption but also a defensive action as an immunological and physical barrier to the external environment. Damage in this complex architecture may lead to increased intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation. Intestinal dysfunction in critically ill patients is difficult to evaluate and is probably common, despite underestimation. I-FABP is a 15 kDa protein located at the tips of intestinal mucosal villi and is usually undetected in the plasma circulation [5]. Intestinal ischemia even for a short period of time is

Abstract: the aim of this study was to assess the influence of fluvial transport on the incidence of bruising in cattle meat slaughtered in pantanal (tropical wetland in south america), mato grosso do sul state, by quantifying, in the traditional brazilian commercial cuts, the number and size of bruises as well as their age based on when they occurred and where the lesions are located. from a total of 88 carcasses assessed, 83 (94.3%) had one or more bruises, totaling 253 bruises, which resulted in the removal of 39.988 kg meat, with a general mean of 0.454 kg by animal. regarding the size of bruises, the highest means were found in animals submitted to conditions i and ii. the animals submitted to condition ii presented the highest means of bruise age. a difference was established among the conditions assessed in terms of frequency of bruises in the commercial cuts. the results show that the system of cattle transport in pantanal influenced the incidence of bruises. the increase of the distance spent for the transport associated to animals fasting from the farm to the slaughterhouse resulted in a higher number of bruises although smaller.

Investiga??es em Ensino de Ciências , 2010,
Abstract: The ash soap making process developed by women from the interior of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described and analyzed in order to typify it as ethnoscience. Some of the major conceptions related to folk knowledge, ethnoscience and the chemistry of saponification are presented in order to justify this enterprise. The theoretical and methodological aspects of the ethnographic research carried out with the group of women investigated is discussed and an approximation between the knowledge of these women, the Chemistry knowledge and that of the students of the secondary level is proposed by means of an ethnographic hypermedia as mediational mean for the classroom.

Acta Scientiarum : Agronomy , 2006,
The aim of this work was to evaluate the agronomical characteristics, chemical composition and removal of potassium of five different genotypes of corn grown for silage. A split-plot complete randomized block design was used, with three hybrids (DKB 390, AGX 8517, A-2560) and two varieties (ALBianco, Piratininga), using two cut heights (20 and 40 cm above soil level) and four replications per treatment. After harvest, plants were analyzed for chemical characteristics andpotassium (K). Milk production and DM intake were predicted for each treatment. There was an increase in DM content with the increase in cut height (p<0.05): 31.7 e 33.9%, for 20 and 40 cm, respectively. Depending on genotype, estimates of DM yield (ton/ha) ranged from10.24 to 12.08 for plants cut at 20 cm and from 8.92 to 10.51 for plants cut at 40 cm. On average, there was a decrease (19.1%) in potassium removal by the crop as a result of increased cut height. Increased cut height also led to a decrease in predicted milk production and an increase in predicted DMI. These results suggest that the corn genotypes under study should be harvested at the lower cut height to promote increased animal productivity per ha.
