Gonalves, Cláudia Giglio de Oliveira;Mota, Pedro Henrique de Miranda;Marques, Jair Mendes;
Pró-Fono Revista de Atualiza??o Científica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-56872009000100010
Abstract: background: age and exposure to noise are among the factors that may cause hearing loss in adults. both of these factors are considered additives once their combined effects can cause damage to the hair cells of the organ of corti. aim: to verify whether the exposure to occupational noise is an important risk factor for hearing disorders in adults with ages between 50 to 70 years, besides the auditory deterioration caused by age. method: the audiograms of 71 men with ages ranging between 50 to 70 years were studied (cohort study), with the participants being divided in 2 groups (group 1 with occupational exposure to noise and group 2 without the exposure to noise) in order to compare their auditory profiles. results: the groups do not present significant differences regarding age (p = 0.321), with most of the participants with ages between 50 and 55 years (48); 14 subjects presented normal bilateral hearing thresholds and all of the others presented neurossensorial hearing loss. an association between noise and hearing disorders was found, with significant differences between the groups for auditory thresholds above 3000hz, with group 1 presenting worse results (p < 0.05). conclusion: the auditory thresholds of individuals with ages between 50 and 70 years are worse for the group that is exposed to noise. noise is a higher risk factor than age when considering neurossensorial hearing losses.

Revista Brasileira de Meteorologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-77862009000400007
Abstract: this work presents the vedalogic - method for climatologic data verification - based on data mining models, to be used by the "instituto de controle do espa?o aéreo brasileiro" (icea). the vedalogic method consists of a data verification using data mining algorithm models. the method uses clustering models generated from a historical series that provide the identification of homogeneous groups in the climatologic data base (cdb). this method, based on clustering models, detects unconformities, named outliers. detected outliers are classified/predicted according to the decision tree models which are also built from historic data. the found value based on the decision tree model is used as a suggestion to correct an outlier, contributing to increase the cdb data consistence. in this study, the expectation-maximization (em) and the k-means algorithms were used to generate clustering models, and the reptree and the m5p algorithms were used to generate decision (classification/prediction) tree models. to verify the efficiency of the proposed method, some noisy data were artificially inserted into cdb. after applying the vedalogic method, all inserted noisy data were detected and the adjustments have an average precision above 98%.

In essence, the fundamental purpose of the use of pulsed current welding is to increase the relationship power of the process / wire speed, since it is very low in the short circuit transfer. Therefore, welds result in poor quality, especially on aluminum and its alloys and stainless steels. With the pulsed current, avoiding the short circuiting, the relation power / wire speed increases because the voltage never reaches values lower than 15 V. Then, the logic of control is just to avoid short circuits, hence yielding system configuration with more than one drop per period illogical. What is vital for the pulse technique is the physical arrangement of the wave variables. So, this article examines several sets of pulse current and pulse time, constituting different detachment parameters, and also different droplet diameters. The relationship between those variables is examined, considering the exponent of the current pulse equal to 2.3, according to researcher Amin, and the exponent 2.0, according to most adoptions in the literature. However, the value of 1.83 was found as the best fit for the wire ER4043. It was also shown that the best condition of detachment is

Among all arc welding processes, MIG/MAG is the one experiencing most of the innovations, originating an enormous quantity of new versions. Due to this fact, end users are faced with a great difficulty in keeping up to date with the state of the art and taking due decisions, whether in the selection of new equipment or in the selection of the correct welding mode and respective adjusting of an already available equipment. Many of the novelties come on the market with a technological appeal that not always correspond to scientific truths. Thus, this paper aims at giving a contribution to this question, addressing the CMT (Cold Metal Transfer). A study of melting characteristics is presented, providing comparisons with the conventional short-circuiting MIG/MAG process for the particular case of naval aluminum 5183. Results reveal that the apparent low electrical power of the CMT, suggested by the low average voltage and current, is not correct. Indeed for the adopted conditions it is a variant of the MIG/MAG process with more power than conventional MIG/MAG, when correct power calculation procedures are made. Nevertheless CMT

Abstract: several studies have investigated different injuries that occur among soccer players. however, it has been noticed that none has mentioned injury to the external obturator muscle. as a small and monoarticulated muscle, its incidence is probably low and barely documented in the literature. therefore, the aim of this study is to present four external obturator muscle strain cases in a professional soccer team in 2008. the data was collected from a database using the software sistema de prepara??o desportiva which provides data such as name, diagnosis, trauma mechanism, clinical history, time away from training and progress. all athletes who undertook magnetic resonance imaging (mri) of the external obturator muscle and presented rupture of the external obturator muscle were included in the study. four external obturator muscle strain injuries were identified from a total of twenty-eight muscle strains during the year of 2006. all athletes presented diffuse pain on the hip for medial and lateral rotation of the joint. the predominant injury mechanism was lateral rotation of the trunk over the femur on closed kinetic chain. it was concluded that external obturator muscle strain injuries can be mistaken for those related to the hip adductor muscles due to the reported pain area. clinical examination should be based on the athletes' report and functional tests, mainly for the hip rotator muscles. the mri scan was essential to the location, classification and evaluation of the injury size.

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization when compared to the conventional procedure. Method: A prospective cohort study was carried out over a 9-month period from February to October 2016 involving 144 inpatients at PICU of Irmandade da Santa Casa de Sao Paulo Hospital, undergoing central venous catheterization. The patients were matched in pairs of identical patients according to the levels of potentially intervening variables (age, nutritional status, puncture site, professional experience), differing only as to the CVC technique: ultrasound-guided (USG-CVC) or conventional (C-CVC). Discarding data from non-paired patients, the remaining did forming 47 pairs, matched as two related samples: USG-CVC and C-CVC groups. Success parameters: number of puncture attempts; time spent at CVC; success rate and complications. Results: In the USG-CVC group, the number of attempts (mean = 2.04) and the time spent at catheterization (mean = 11.89 minutes) were lower (t = 2.34, df = 46, t 0.95 = 2.02, p < 0.05) and (t = 3.07, df = 46, t 0.95 = 2.02, p < 0.05), respectively, when compared to the results obtained for the control group (C-GVC), (mean = 3.21) and (mean = 28.26 minutes), respectively. As to success, there was observed a significant difference (F (1, 46) = 16.6; Q (1) = 12.5, p < 005) when considering only one trial (USG -CVC = 27/47; C-CVC = 9/47), but no significant difference (F (1, 46) = 3.76; Q (1) = 3.56, p > 0.05) when considering several attempts. Complications were found less frequently in the USG-CVC group (3/47) than in the CVC-C (13/47), (F (1, 46) = 8.24; Q (1) = 7.14, p < 0.05). Conclusion: USG-CVC was found to be more effective than the conventional technique, especially regarding success at the first puncture attempt.
