Abstract: one of the main problems faced by humanity is pollution caused by residues resulting from the production and use of goods, e.g, sewage sludge. among the various alternatives for its disposal, the agricultural use seems promising. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity and interaction of soil with sandy-silty texture, classified as spodosols, from the experimental station itapirema - ipa, in goiana, state of pernambuco, in mixtures with sewage sludge from the mangueira sewage treatment station, in the city of recife, pernambuco at rates of 25, 50 and 75 mg ha-1. tests were conducted to let water percolate the natural saturated soil and soil-sludge mixtures to characterize their physical, chemical, and microstructural properties as well as hydraulic conductivity. statistical data analysis showed that the presence of sewage sludge in soils leads to an increase of the < 0.005 mm fraction, reduction in real specific weight and variation in optimum moisture content from 11.60 to 12.90 % and apparent specific dry weight from 17.10 and 17.50 kn m-3. in the sludge-soil mixture, the quartz grains were covered by sludge and filling of the empty soil macropores between grains. there were changes in the chemical characteristics of soil and effluent due to sewage sludge addition and a small decrease in hydraulic conductivity. the results indicate the possibility that soil acidity influenced the concentrations of the elements found in the leachate, showing higher levels at higher sludge doses. it can be concluded that the leaching degree of potentially toxic elements from the sewage sludge treatments does not harm the environment.

Abstract: the hyperdontia teeth is an anomaly of unknown cause, characterized by increased numbers of teeth. it occurs more frequently in the maxilla, preferably in males, and is more common in permanent dentition. the presence of supernumerary teeth can be responsible for alterations in the permanent dentition, such as the delay in the eruption and dislocations. in addition, the patient may have abnormal occlusion, resorption of adjacent teeth and cyst formation. this article describes in a male patient, 9 years old, the presence of two upper right lateral incisor and one upper left lateral incisor, permanent, partially erupted. radiological examination revealed a second left upper lateral incisor, unerupted. it should be noted that both, in the region of the 1.2 as in 2.2, the teeth showed normal anatomy and not the conoid appearance commonly observed in supernumerary teeth. in our case, in order to perform orthodontic treatment surgical removal of the teeth noted above was indicated.

Interaction Induced Quantum Valley Hall Effect in Graphene

Physics , 2013, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevX.5.011040
Abstract: We use Pseudo Quantum Electrodynamics (PQED) in order to describe the full electromagnetic interaction of the p-electrons of graphene in a consistent 2D formulation. We first consider the effect of this interaction in the vacuum polarization tensor or, equivalently, in the current correlator. This allows us to obtain the dc conductivity after a smooth zero-frequency limit is taken in Kubo's formula.Thereby, we obtain the usual expression for the minimal conductivity plus corrections due to the interaction that bring it closer to the experimental value. We then predict the onset of an interaction-driven spontaneous Quantum Valley Hall effect (QVHE) below a critical temperature of the order of $0.05$ K. The transverse (Hall) valley conductivity is evaluated exactly and shown to coincide with the one in the usual Quantum Hall effect. Finally, by considering the effects of PQED, we show that the electron self-energy is such that a set of P- and T- symmetric gapped electron energy eigenstates are dynamically generated, in association with the QVHE.
Extensive parapharyngeal and skull base neuroglial ectopia; a challenge for differential diagnosis and treatment: case report

Abstract: context: neuroglial ectopia has been defined as a mass composed of differentiated neuroectodermal tissue isolated from the spinal canal or cranial cavity and remains rare. this lesion has to be considered in the differential diagnosis among newborn infants with classical symptoms of respiratory distress, neck mass and feeding difficulties. we present a rare case of extensive parapharyngeal and skull base neuroglial ectopia in 6-month-old girl who presented respiratory and feeding obstruction at birth. case report: a six-month-old girl who presented upper respiratory and feeding obstruction at birth and was using tracheostomy and gastrostomy tubes was referred to our institution. complete surgical excision of the mass consisted of a transcervical-transparotid approach with extension to the infratemporal fossa by means of a lateral transzygomatic incision, allowing preservation of all vital neurovascular structures. the anatomopathological examination showed a solid mass with nests of neural tissue, with some neurons embedded in poorly encapsulated fibrovascular stroma, without mitotic areas, and with presence of functioning choroid plexus in the immunohistochemistry assay. neurovascular function was preserved, thus allowing postoperative decannulation and oral feeding. despite the large size of the mass, the child has completed one year and six months of follow-up without complications or recurrence. neuroglial ectopia needs to be considered in diagnosing airway obstruction among newborns. surgical treatment is the best choice and should be performed on clinically stable patients. an algorithm to guide the differential diagnosis and improve the treatment was proposed.
A pluriatividade das famílias rurais no Nordeste e no Sul do Brasil: pobreza rural e políticas públicas
Nascimento, Carlos Alves do;
Economia e Sociedade , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182009000200004
Abstract: the paper aims to undo the idea that pluriactivity finds favorable environment to its growth in regions with dynamic and modern local economies. the research is based on information processing from the microdata of the pesquisa nacional por amostra de domicílios - pnad (from 1992 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2005). this paper also points out that, in the case of the south region, the growth (or not growth) of pluriactivity - and its influence over family farms - depends fundamentally on political conceptions and political actions. in the northeast, pluriactivity increases associated to poverty in interior areas of the region.
Pluriatividade e política pública: o caso do Sul do Brasil
Nascimento, Carlos Alves do;
Revista de Economia Política , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572007000300008
Abstract: the growth of contingent of pluriactive farm families (pluriactivity) has increasingly been accepted as important in reducing rural poverty and unemployment since at least two decades in the eu and very recently in brazil. this paper supports that, differently from the eu, in the south brazil, region of modern capitalist agriculture, it is hard to the pluriactivity to grow through the years, and in order for it to increase the public policies, it must be led mainly to avoid the exclusion of the small farms, their gradual abandonment of the traditional agricultural activities, and not only to offer them non agricultural occupations.
Pluriatividade, pobreza rural e servi?o doméstico remunerado
Nascimento, Carlos Alves do;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032004000200008
Abstract: this paper tries to analyze, based on the micro data of the pesquisa nacional por amostra de domicílios (pnda) - years 1992-1999 and 2001 - the share of the paid domestic service income between some types of poor rural families that presented negative growing taxes in the 90s, showing that in different cases, the paid domestic service income better explains the reduction of rural poverty than governmental transferences (retirements and pensions). we made a brief analysis of the evolution of different types of rural extensive families (and poor) in the 90s, besides a comparative analysis among the big regions of the country with respect to the average and per capita incomes of different types of rural families, adopting as reference 2001. we tried also to demonstrate that the reduction of the poor rural families is due to, in this case, because they are becoming non-occupied families, residents in the rural areas, and not only because of agricultural exodus (substitution of the agricultural activities for the non-agricultural activities) and/or rural-urban exodus. to test these hypotheses, we adopted as reference the rural poverty line created by takagi et al (2001) - of u$ 1,08 - and the new tipology of extensive families developed by the projeto rurbano.

International Journal of Stochastic Analysis , 2000, DOI: 10.1155/s1048953300000228
Abstract: We consider a stochastic equation of Navier-Stokes type containing a noise part given by a stochastic integral with respect to a Wiener process. The purpose of this paper is to approximate the solution of this nonlinear equation by the Galerkin method. We prove the convergence in mean square.
The Dance of Change. Staff and User

Liber Quarterly : The Journal of European Research Libraries , 2000,
Abstract: In the beginning I would like you to imagine a picture: there are people lying in deckchairs, young, cultivated, relaxed, surrounded by books. Are this the staff of the library thinking up ways of making the Stuttgart City-Library more attractive? Or are this the customers, who dream of their ideal library, which is open all day and all night, providing access to the global data networks and housing all the books you could possibly want to read, a library whose staff are highly competent and unshakably charming, a library with an inspiring and relaxed environment?
