Nehal A. Rayan, Amen H. Zaky, Hanan A. Eltyb, Ashraf Zeidan, Asmaa M. Zahran
Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2019.107044
Abstract: Background: The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been reported to reflect systemic inflammation and independent prognostic significance in different types of cancer. In present study, we analyzed the association between NLR and clinicopathologic features and verified the significance of NLR as a prognostic factor for patients with breast cancer. Patients and Methods: A total of 388 patients with stage I - III breast cancer were retrospectively recruited into this study. Associations with clinicopathologic factors and NLR were assessed; disease-free survival and overall survival were estimated. Results: There was no significant association between NLR and clinicopathologic factors. Patients with low pre/post-treatment NLR had longer OS. Conclusion: A high pre/postoperative NLR may be considered an important factor for predicting poor prognosis in non-metastatic breast cancer patients.
Adjectives as Persuasive Tools: The Case of Product Naming  [PDF]
Hanan A. Ebaid
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2018.86022
Abstract: Adjectives are integral elements in linguistic structures whose main function is to identify, describe and modify nouns or pronouns. The main objective of this study is to focus on a frequent and ubiquitous use of adjectives in which an adjective, a highly effective persuasive tool, occurs solely without a head noun. This type is common in marketing when more precisely an adjective represents or stands for the name of a certain product. This use of adjectives is recurrent worldwide as will be shown through data analysis. The current study is a qualitative descriptive research that depends on analyzing data collected from several online sites referring to names of commercial products utilized in different countries. The analysed data represented by 66 products are categorized into two main groups. First, one word adjective phrases as in Orange, Idea and Pure. Second, multi word adjective phrases which are further subdivided into: two word adjective phrases as in Icy Hot; compound adjective phrases as in Fair and Lovely and adjective phrases with a premodifying adverb as in So Bright. The analysis focuses on highlighting the features and meanings associated with such products that render them worth buying. It is found that adjectives prove to be strong persuasive tools to the extent that producers and advertising agencies are urged to use them solely to name products. It is also found that some adjectives reflect socio-cultural aspects as in the case of the products called Organic which appeal to Western and European consumers, while products called Beiti or homemade have a strong appeal to Egyptian consumers.
Performing Speaking “Ungrammatical” American English: A Kuwaiti Linguistic Phenomenon  [PDF]
Nada A. Algharabali, Hanan A. Taqi
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2018.86021
Abstract: Language attitudes have been addressed by many studies, and the importance of accent choice is one of the attitudes investigated, yet scarcely by EFL educationists. The current study investigates the conscious choice of the American accent by Kuwaiti speakers of English as a foreign language and the importance of accent over other language aspects such as grammar, vocabulary and style as perceived by students. 67 female informants from the College of Basic Education, who are to become potential English teachers and speak with an American-like accent, participated in this study. The informants were given a questionnaire, and after obtaining their consent, their speech was recorded during in-class presentations. Some of the informants were interviewed to elaborate further on the importance of acquiring an American accent. The data was analyzed quantitatively through SPSS (mean and frequency) and qualitatively (through general sociolinguistic and phonetic analysis), and it suggests that most participants believe that achieving an American accent is prestigious and “cool” and more important than developing grammatical and lexical skills.
The Relationship Between Fast Food Consumption and BMI among University Female Students
Hanan A. Alfawaz
Pakistan Journal of Nutrition , 2012,
Abstract: Fast food has become an important part of our diet and the increase in fast-food consumption is likely to continue. Our aim was to study the relationship between fast food and Body Mass Index (BMI) and the pattern of consumption of fast food in female university students. Total of 141 female students from different study levels of Nutrition and Food Science Department, King Saud University (KSU), Riyadh Saudi Arabia were included. A survey questionnaire which contains three sections was used; firstly sociodemographic data, secondly fast food consumptions pattern and thirdly whether students apply basic nutrition knowledge in their selection of food or not. Height, weight and BMI were measured. We found that overweight and obesity were present in 25% of female students. Fast food consumption frequency of 1-2 times per week was high among them (74.5%). There is no significant relationship between fast food consumption, BMI and the pattern of consumption of fast food. There is a significant (p<0.05) positive relationship between increase in size of fish sandwich meal and increase of BMI. However there is no significant relationship between portion size of other food types and BMI. Moreover, we found significant (p<0.05) positive relationship between university study level and the knowledge in explaining why fast food is unhealthy.

Elsayed A. Elrifai, Hanan E. Darwish, Abdusalam R. Ahmed
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/am.2011.210171
Abstract: Making use of the Cho-Kwon-Srivastava operator, we introduce and study a certain SCn (j, p, λ, α, δ) of p-valently analytic functions with negative coefficients. In this paper, we obtain coefficient estimates, distortion theorem, radii of close-to-convexity, starlikeness and convexity and modified Hadamard products of functions belonging to the class SCn (j, p, λ, α, δ). Finally, several applications investigate an integral operator, and certain fractional calculus operators also considered.
Genetic and Metabolic Variability between Two Subspecies of Chamaeleo chamaeleon (Reptilia: Chamaeleonidae) in Egypt  [PDF]
Mohamed A. M. Kadry, Hanan R. H. Mohamad
Advances in Bioscience and Biotechnology (ABB) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/abb.2014.58083

The degree of variability between two subspecies of Chamaeleo chamaeleon; C. chamaeleon chamaeleon inhabiting El-Dabaa (MarsaMatrouh) and C. chamaeleon musae inhabiting El-Arish (North Sinai) of Egypt was investigated in this study using polyacrylamide gel electrophoreses for Lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh) and Alfa-esterase (α-Est) isoenzymes. Total lipids and proteins of liver and muscle tissues in both species were analyzed. Three Ldh isoforms were recorded for both subspecies and the activity. Rate of flow (RF) of Ldh-1 seemed to be higher in C. chamaeleon chamaeleon than in C. chamaeleon musae. This high activity could be supported by the significant increase in the total lipids and proteins in liver and muscle tissues of this species. It may thus be reasonable to suppose that C. chamaeleon chamaeleon is more active, energetic and adaptable in its habitat than C. chamaeleon musae. The α-Est showed four fractions in both subspecies. Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2014.45012

Background: The oxidative stress and disturbed redox signaling during gestation my play an important role in the fetal programming of adult diabetes. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effects of maternal diabetes on pre- and post-natal pancreatic and peripheral tissues redox and oxidative status in order to clarify their role in the diabetogenic programming of F1 offspring. Methods: Two groups of female Wistar rats were used (diabetic and control); diabetes was neonatally induced by STZ injection to 5-day old rats. 10 pregnancies of each group were terminated at GD 17 to obtain placentas and fetal pancreas, liver, muscle and adipose tissues for prenatal measurements. The rest of pregnancies were completed to term and the offspring were weaned to control diet or high-caloric (HCD) diet and followed up for 30 weeks. Every 5 weeks 10 male rats were sacrificed and serum and tissues were obtained for assessment of fasting blood glucose, tissues content of 8-oxo-dG, TBARS, GSH, GSSG, antioxidant enzymes and caspase-3. Results: The results indicated that, prenatally redox status of the foetuses of diabetic mothers is shifted toward more oxidizing environment which results from elevated oxidative stress and impaired antioxidants as indicated by elevated fetal tissues content of 8-oxo-dG, TBARS and GSSG and decreased GSH and GSH/GSSG ratio. All of these induce the apoptotic pathway in fetal pancreas. Postnatally, impaired glucose tolerance in the offspring of diabetic mothers is detected at 15th week of age and no hyperglycemia was detected until age of 30 weeks in the offspring under CD while some of offspring under HCD at age 25 weeks and most of them at 30 weeks have developed hyperglycemia. The pancreas of the offspring of diabetic mothers suffers from oxidative stress from the 5th week of age as indicated by elevated levels of nuclear and mitochondrial 8-oxo-dG contents and TBARS. Also, GSH level showed depletion with age and the activity of glutathione reductase was lower in the β

BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6882-11-10
Abstract: We studied adult female Wistar rats aged 12-14 months, divided into three groups: sham-operated control (SHAM), ovariectomized (OVX), and ovariectomized rats supplemented with extravirgin olive oil (Olive-OVX) orally for 12 weeks; 4 weeks before ovariectomy and 8 weeks after. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected. Plasma levels of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitrates were assayed. Specimens from both the tibia and the liver were processed for light microscopic examination. Histomorphometric analysis of the tibia was also performed. The OVX-rats showed a significant decrease in plasma calcium levels, and a significant increase in plasma ALP, MDA, and nitrates levels. These changes were attenuated by olive oil supplementation in the Olive-OVX rats. Light microscopic examination of the tibia of the OVX rats revealed a significant decrease in the cortical bone thickness (CBT) and the trabecular bone thickness (TBT). In addition, there was a significant increase in the osteoclast number denoting bone resorption. In the Olive-OVX rats these parameters were markedly improved as compared to the OVX group. Examination of the liver specimens revealed mononuclear cellular infiltration in the portal areas in the OVX-rats which was not detected in the Olive-OVX rats.Olive oil effectively mitigated ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats, and is a promising candidate for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.Osteoporosis represents the most common metabolic bone disease. The most common type of osteoporosis is the bone loss associated with ovarian hormone deficiency at menopause [1]. The increasing incidence of postmenopausal osteoporosis and its related fractures have become global health issues in the recent days [2]. Estrogen deficiency has been regarded as a critical cause of osteoporosis, which can result from naturally or surgically induced menopause. Several placebo-controlled trials have shown tha
