Molecular epidemiology and evolution of avian infectious bronchitis virus
Montassier, HJ;
Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2010000200003
Abstract: mutation and recombination processes are involved in the genetic and phenotypic variations of rna viruses, leading to the emergence of new variant strains, and give rise to virus population diversity to be modeled by the host, particularly by the immune system, as occurred with infectious bronchitis virus (ibv) in chickens. the consequence is a continuous emergence of new ibv variants with regard to pathotypes, serotypes, and protectotypes. nucleotide sequencing and subsequent genetic analysis of the s1 and n protein gene sequences provide a fast and accurate method to classify and predict ibv genotype, and a powerful instrument to monitor phylogenetic and epidemiological evolution of ibv variants. despite the use of vaccination programmes, infectious bronchitis has become a serious problem in brazil. thus, a significant number of ibv field variants have been identified circulating in the brazilian commercial poultries between 2000 to 2006 and more recently in argentina. these viruses seem to be indigenous, because they demonstrated a low genetic relatedness with the majority of the reference strains from north america, europe and asia, but were moderately to highly related one to another. in summary, indigenous field ibv variants were evolving and circulating in the field in brazil and argentina, and should be considered as initial candidates for protection against current ibv infectious in chickens. however, in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to determine the pathogenicity and immunogenecity of these new isolates, before defining a new vaccine strain.
Missional theology and social development
HJ Hendriks
HTS Theological Studies/Teologiese Studies , 2007,
Abstract: The article describes a theological paradigm shift taking place in congregations in South Africa that empower them to become involved in development work as a way of serving their neighbor. It also opens the possibility of working interdisciplinary without compromising theological and faith values. The perspectives and assumptions of the new paradigm are outlined and the basic methodology of doing theology is described. The new paradigm is a missional one, taking the focus on God as its point of departure and describing the identity and purpose of the church by looking at God's identity and plan or mission with creation and humankind. Social development is seen as being in line with God's mission and as such the church should not have difficulty in working with those who pursue the same goals. Decline of Traditional Pottery Practice among the Afizere of Naton-Doss in Plateau State of Nigeria
HJ Gukas
ATBU Journal of Environmental Technology , 2011,
Abstract: Described in this paper is how certain changes have affected the practice of traditional pottery of the Afizere cultural group in the village settlement of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. It gives a brief background history of the existence of the Afizere cultural community and, how intergroup relationship between the community and other cultural groups around them has influenced Afizere culture. Also considered are variables such as: the numerical strength of the Afizere community in relation to that of the other cultural groups around them; the impact of Islam and Christianity; the impact of Western system of education and the influx of modern facilities in the area as the prevailing problems militating against the practice of traditional pottery technique among the Afizere community. Thus, suggestions are made, that may encourage the younger generation of this particular cultural community to develop appreciable interest in their traditional pottery heritage and, avail themselves of the cottage or selfemployment, and tourism potentials with which pottery production is known.

Progress in understanding the paleness of meat with a low pH: keynote address
HJ Swatland
South African Journal of Animal Science , 2004,
Abstract: Meat with a low pH is generally paler than at a high pH. Paleness related to pH is caused by light scattering. Myofibrils are a primary cause of pH-related light scattering in meat, but light scattering is also related inversely to sarcomere length. We do not yet know the relative importance of surface reflectance from myofibrils vs. refraction through the depth of myofibrils. Precipitation of sarcoplasmic proteins is added to myofibrillar scattering when pH is extremely low, or when pH reaches low levels while meat is still hot. Scattering tends to decrease the length of the light path through meat. This reduces selective absorbance by myoglobin. Thus, the colour of meat is more conspicuous when pH is high. Recent experiments show a direct contribution from mitochondria to the optical properties of meat. Progress in this subject helps explain meat colour and may help us improve optical methods for predicting meat quality on-line. South African Journal of Animal Science Supp 2 2004:1-7

Der Lilith-Komplex und die Gesundheit des Mannes
Maaz HJ
Blickpunkt der Mann , 2003,
Abstract: "Mütterlichkeit" verliert zunehmend an Wert.
