Discourse Analysis: Ronald Reagan’s Evil Empire Speech  [PDF]
Juliana Vianna da Nobrega
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2014.41014

Language can be a powerful tool to convince others and make them cooperative. Cialdini (2007) has worked out several principles along which it is possible to analyze discourses in terms of their persuasiveness. Others also have contributed with tools to analyzing discourses such as Fairclough (2003). These tools are used to analyze the “Evil Empire Speech” of the US President Ronald Reagan that he held at the National Association of Evangelicals, 1983, in Orlando Florida. His historical speech was aimed at convincing the nation about the righteousness of his nuclear policy. He partly rewrote the already prepared script and included the “evil empire” part. The analysis supports that his speech was an exceptionally effective one. Reagan made his speech an example of the following principles of persuasiveness such as reciprocity, authority, commitment, liking, scarcity and social proof. He wanted support for belligerent intentions from a faithful community, which was already problematic, but he got the audience on his side through emphasizing his similarities with them, his own faithfulness, the presentation of strong examples and balancing humor and seriousness. Additionally, he introduced the striking metaphor “evil empire”, which stuck to the peoples’ minds and had an impact on them. He also appealed to the people through implicitly distinguishing the evil from the ones who were not evil—the US citizens. Thus, he made the American people feel better, to ensure them that they do the right thing when following him. He ranked religious people above him when he was joking about clergy men and politicians. To reinforce his authority, he borrowed the authority of various respected men through citing them. He improved his position and the power of his arguments using the philosophical wisdom of others.

Engenharia Agrícola , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69162011000500007
Abstract: through the site-specific management, the precision agriculture brings new techniques for the agricultural sector, as well as a larger detailing of the used methods and increase of the global efficiency of the system. the objective of this work was to analyze two techniques for definition of management zones using soybean yield maps, in a productive area handled with localized fertilization and other with conventional fertilization. the sampling area has 1.74 ha, with 128 plots with site-specific fertilization and 128 plots with conventional fertilization. the productivity data were normalized by two techniques (normalized and standardized equivalent productivity), being later classified in management zones. it can be concluded that the two methods of management zones definition had revealed to be efficient, presenting similarities in the data disposal. due to the fact that the equivalent standardized productivity uses standard score, it contemplates a better statistics justification.

Kikuti, M;Langoni, H;Nobrega, DN;Corrêa, APFL;Ullmann, LS;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992012000100016
Abstract: leptospirosis is a globally distributed emerging zoonosis. dogs are commonly affected and although other serovars can cause canine leptospirosis, leptospira interrogans serovar canicola is primary found in these animals. a retrospective study was conducted using a database of 1195 dogs tested for leptospira infection from 2003 to 2010 at the laboratory of zoonosis diagnosis at the veterinary hospital of s?o paulo state university (unesp) in botucatu, s?o paulo state, brazil. the seroprevalence of infected dogs was 20.08% (240/1195), and the most prevalent serovars were canicola (6.7%), copenhageni (5.0%), icterohaemorrhagiae (2.9%), autumnalis (2.9%), pyrogenes (2.8%), pomona (2.0%), hardjo (2.0%), australis (1.8%), bratislava (1.6%), cynopteri (1.4%), grippotyphosa (1.3%) and djasiman (1.0%). by univariate analysis, the variables age and breed were not statistically related to the infection, while gender and season were. the effects of gender were also noticeable related to serovars australis, canicola and hardjo. in multivariate analysis, the level of significance (p-value) of season was suppressed by gender, indicating possible collinearity between those two variables.
Superluminal X-shaped beams propagating without distortion along a coaxial guide

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.66.046617
Abstract: In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. E64 (2001) 066603; e-print physics/0001039], we showed that localized Superluminal solutions to the Maxwell equations exist, which propagate down (non-evanescence) regions of a metallic cylindrical waveguide. In this paper we construct analogous non-dispersive waves propagating along coaxial cables. Such new solutions, in general, consist in trains of (undistorted) Superluminal "X-shaped" pulses. Particular attention is paid to the construction of finite total energy solutions. Any results of this kind may find application in the other fields in which an essential role is played by a wave-equation (like acoustics, geophysics, etc.). Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1016/j.optcom.2003.08.022
Abstract: In this paper we set forth new exact analytical Superluminal localized solutions to the wave equation for arbitrary frequencies and adjustable bandwidth. The formulation presented here is rather simple, and its results can be expressed in terms of the ordinary, so-called "X-shaped waves". Moeover, by the present formalism we obtain the first analytical localized Superluminal approximate solutions which represent beams propagating in dispersive media. Our solutions may find application in different fields, like optics, microwaves, radio waves, and so on. Game characterizations and lower cones in the Weihrauch degrees
Hugo Nobrega,Arno Pauly
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: We introduce generalized Wadge games and show that each lower cone in the Weihrauch degrees is characterized by such a game. These generalized Wadge games subsume the original Wadge games, the eraser and backtrack games as well as variants of Semmes' tree games. As a new example we introduce the tree derivative games which characterize all even finite levels of the Baire hierarchy, and a variant characterizing the odd finite levels.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1990, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1990000400007
Abstract: htlv-l antibodies were investigated in serum and in csf of 150 patients with neurologic disorders mainly myelopathies. the patients were considered into three groups according to the possible relationship of their disease to the presence of htlv-l antibodies: no relationship risk (control group), occasional risk group, and possible risk group. in this latter are 56 patients with crural spastic paraparesis or paraplegia of unknown etiology (sp). htlv-l antibodies were tested by the passive particle-agglutination method for anti-atla antibody detection. the search was negative in all patients of the control group, and positive (serum and/or csf) in 16.5% of the patients from the second group and in 55.4% of the sp patients group. clinical patterns in sp cases with htlv-l antibodies were those of tropical spastic paraparesis (tsp). csf patterns considered (cytology, protein content and gamma-globulins rate) were different between tsp group with htlv-l antibodies in csf and sp group with no htlv-l antibodies detection either in serum or in csf. the difference was significant. results of this investigation confirm the high incidence of tsp in brazil, and bring additional indication for searching htlv-l antibodies in the csf.
